I use BM Murasco ceiling paint, it does fleck a lot but it covers in one coat, dries fast and flattens out nicely hiding lap marks.

It’s our current favorite. See if you can get a contractor’s discount on it. Otherwise you’ll way over pay for Promar. Sherwin Williams is weird about selling it to home owners.

Holy shit dude you were not kidding I was frustrated AF with my smooth ceilings and today I went and got the roller and the paint. $70 for promar 400 but my god this stuff is incredible. Literally melts into the ceiling. Thank you for the video for real. I threw so much money away on this and sanded and sanded and sanded and I'm finally amazed, I can see the ceiling from a foot away in my shallow kitchen and it looks perfect. Is it possible to paint my ceiling where I see some stains? will it match? I tried matching the paint from the vent that was painted on the ceiling but it seems the color and sheen are still off so I’m not sure if I can touch it up or just paint the whole thing again. I think it’s older paint so it’s ultra flat.

If it’s older paint then it’s unlikely that you’ll get a decent match. If you’ve got stains then you may need to hit them with some spray Kilz then paint the whole ceiling (likely 2 coats). That’s the most bomb proof solution.

I've always used Masterhide flat from SW on ceilings. Not sure if its available in all markets, but its cheap, a true dead flat, and covers like a champ. It makes a great primer if needed, and touches up great. It does speckle like crazy though when rolling overhead. I like your vids, man. As a pro, I agree with you way more than I do other popular KZbinrs on the subject. Good work.

I do a lot of new construction homes and that's all I use for ceilings and closets. It's cheaper covers great but man does it rain down on you. Burns the eyes a little bit lol

Thanks Toby! We've used Masterhide in the past as well and I liked it. We still use it on some jobs, but we've switched over to Promar Ceiling paint for most of our ceilings. It's just a personal preference. Nothing wrong with Masterhide! Keep smashing brother.

It is not a zero VOC product, but it does come in an untinted white. Thats usually what we use on the majority of ceilings.

Hello Jeremy, we're having our house repainted and our contractor is suggesting Promar 400 for all ceilings but the bathroom. Would ProMar Ceiling Paint be a better alternative? Is it as flat as Promar 400? Also, we are drenching the whole house (doors, trims, walls and ceiling the same color) with dark and vivid colors like burgundy and dark teal. Would you still recommend ProMar Ceiling Paint over Promar 400? Or maybe another paint from SW (contractor got an account with them). For the walls, we will be using Cashmere in flat. Thanks

Promar ceiling is flatter than 400 flat. However, you are likely going to end up using products in a deep base, ultra deep base, or accent base. I’m going off of the color scheme you mentioned. I don’t think Promar ceiling paint comes in any dark bases. I can’t speak for the contractor you’re working with, they may very well be correct and confident in those product choices for the work they’re going to do. If you hired me to do the work, then I would use Emerald flat on the walls and ceilings. Then emerald urethane in either satin or semi-gloss on the trim and doors. The darker colors can behave oddly in certain products and I’ve never liked Cashmere. This is just my two cents based on your comment and my experience with those types of color schemes. I’m not trying to spit shade or cause problems with your contractor.

Try using a arrorworthy microfiber 9/16 roller it works great with the promar ceiling paint.I use the 14 inch roller holds a lot of paint and gives a more even distribution in my opinion and less spatter then the white dove woven cover.Another great ceiling paint is superhide zero voc from Benjamin Moore for about $17 a gallon.The muresco from Benjamin Moore also very good.Thanks for the video!

@@SuperVassarBrothers Sherwin Williams makes a paint called painters edge.The flat version is the flattest paint you can buy from Sherwin Williams at $15 a gallon..Works great with the arrowworthy microfiber.It has a sheen of .5-1 unit @ 85° which is more flat then the promar ceiling paint so in critical lighting might be a bit better.

To my knowledge, I don't think I've ever used CHB. You could always try a few gallons out and see how it goes. I'll ask my sales rep about trying some. Maybe we'll do a comparison video in the future!

I'd stick with Emerald for everything. To my knowledge Promar doesn't come in an ultra-deep base. It's often a better move to go with a more premium product (Emerald) for dark colors. It covers better and you'll generally have less issues. The deeper bases tend to perform a bit better with a lower sheen like matte or flat, in case that's also a concern.

I'm not a painter but a homeowner that wants to paint her ceiling and i need help choosing paint. My home is a new construction covered with SW agreeable gray from top to bottom. I need a ceiling paint that will match agreeable gray. I've since found out that it goes well with extra white or incredible white. But im open to trying other brands that would work. Extra White is a great option. You can also go with the untinted Promar Ceiling Paint. If you can, see if you can get the contractor price for the Promar Ceiling paint. It is unreasonably expensive for homeowners if you don't get the contractor discount. Most Sherwin Williams stores will cut you a deal. I prefer a 9 inch White Dove 1/2 inch nap roller from Purdy. That's what we use for the majority of the ceilings that we do. Good luck with your ceilings!

What about a 3 season porch used for a hot tub? Exterior or interior the ceiling is covered by a roof but New Engand has extreme temperatures. Please help 🙏

I'd recommend going with a good exterior paint. My first choice would be Regal Select Moorgard in the Low Lustre sheen. It's one of my favorite exterior paints and it holds up really well to weather and extreme temperatures. If you want a bit more sheen then you can go with the Moorglo Soft-Gloss. Hi Pat. I would recommend priming just in case. If you went over it with Promar most likely you would do 3 coats anyway. Thats what we've experienced. Have a good one!

We do try and keep up with the comments, but I've been slacking over Christmas break. We have had some interesting experiences with Promar ceiling recently. A good alternative that you may actually get cheaper (especially if you don't have a contractors account) is using Super Paint Flat. It's not marketed as a ceiling paint, but it works really well as one. During the shortage we were using it a lot for our ceilings. That's my #1 recommendation for a Promar alternative. 1/2 inch should still work for you. It would have to be a fairly aggressive texture to go with a 3/4 inch nap. My current favorite roller cover is the Wooster 1/2 inch Pro Doo-Z FTP

We only tint it if the client specifies a color. I'd say 95% of the ceilings we do is with untinted promar ceiling.

You could use Sherwin Williams Drywall Primer or their Multi-Purpose Primer. Both should do the trick. The drywall primer is fairly inexpensive. The Multi-Purpose is a little more pricey but its super easy to work with and its one of my favorite primers. Thanks for the comment and let me know how your project turns out!

Hello, I have a question about bathroom paint. Can you paint a satin sheen over semigloss? I'm not liking the sheen and I used Sherwin Williams Super Paint in Semigloss to paint the walls and I now want to paint over it with a Benjamin Moore's Aura Satin sheen paint. Would I be able to do this without sanding my walls prior and would I encounter any problems just painting over it? Thank you

Hi Lisa. If your bathroom has a shower or tub in it make sure to use a moisture resistant paint like Ben Moores Aura Bath and Spa. Otherwise yes you can paint satin over semi gloss. Minimum it will take 2 coats and as long as there are no water stains on the wall you'll be fine. If water stains or water marks show through after the first coat then you'll need to oil prime those areas. Good luck!

I've had the best results with Promar Ceiling paint. However, if you can't get it at a contractors discount then it may not be worth it for you. You shouldn't pay more than $30 a gallon. For whatever reason Sherwin Williams doesn't like selling Promar to homeowners. A decent substitute would be Superpaint Flat which you should be able to get for a decent price. Yes you can tint ceiling paint any color you wish. If you don't like blue undertones then I'd steer you towards a white that has a warm tone to it. Take a look at these three colors from Sherwin Williams: Greek Villa SW 7551, Alabaster SW 7008, Ibis White SW 7000. I hope this helps!

We have, but it’s kind of a break even experience. We end up doing three coats if we go straight over drywall. We always prime first then do two coats.

It depends on what finish/sheen you are looking for. If you want it to be flat (no shine) then I'd go with the Promar Ceiling Paint from Sherwin Williams. The last couple tongue and groove ceilings we've painted, we used Duration Matte which turned out really nice. It's a bit shinier than a flat, but not nearly as shiny as a trim paint. If you get Duration on sale from Sherwin Williams, then you can get it around $35 a gallon. I hope this helps!

I am a little confused about the pricing/availability of this paint though, since the list price is $75 and only on the "pro" section of the SW website. This is an annoying thing about Sherwin Williams. I wasn't aware of this at the time of making the video, but for whatever reason they don't like selling Promar Ceiling paint to "non-professionals". Under no circumstances, should you pay $75 for this paint. The best way to do it is to see if you can get the contractor price or use a contractor friend's account at Sherwin Williams. You should be paying right around $30 per can. If that doesn't work out, then a decent alternative is to go with Superpaint Flat. You can usually get a decent deal on that paint and it works really well.

Ugh, don't get me started. Sherwin Williams pricing is ridiculous for homeowners. I didn't realize it when I put this video out. For whatever reason, they don't really offer Promar ceiling to homeowners even though it's their best ceiling paint. It's not worth $60 a gallon. I pay under $25 for it, which is reasonable. They're about to release a new ceiling paint that I think will have a better price point. As an alternative, you can try Superpaint Flat on ceilings if it's on sale. It'll defiantly be cheaper then what you'd pay for Promar.

If they've already been painted then you can use whatever interior paint you want to (assuming that they're interior walls). If they haven't been painted then you'll want to use a masonry paint like Loxon.

Thanks I just used some Sherwin-Williams white ceiling paint but it's the one in the blue can, have to check but getting ready to do my bedrooms and will get this for the ceilings. I actually switched my trim paint from BJM Advance to SW Emerald Urethane as I was having trouble with those mystery drips that seem to occur well after the fact on my door and window trim I was painting in the whole house as the SW is definitely more manageable and almost as smooth leveling though I did switch back to the Advance for my 6 panel doors I'm now painting in place as I was getting a little roping with the Emerald Urethane when my air in house was really dry this winter as the Advance seemed to work smoother in that condition and any drips are easier to see and deal with than I'm the details of the long door & window trim which was a lot of double checking. Thankfully the color match of the BJM White Dove was perfect so you can't tell any difference.

Great video, only thing is when I get down to my Sherwin Williams paint store the “Pro” paint isn’t there, or at least it isn’t shown, they might have it in back. My other problem was the person helping me didn’t know squat. Are these paints only available to contractors? And if so, how does a non-contractor buy them?

Tom, great observation. Sherwin Williams is having a paint shortage at the moment and your store may be holding the "Pro" paint for the contractors. This is common as the contractors are the big spenders. Super paint flat is a more available option at the moment and works well. The employees helping you can range widely in knowledge. Some, especially newer employees may know diddly squat, and more seasoned employees can be extremely helpful. Managers of the store are usually good.

It's not just for contractors. You can purchase it at any Sherwin Williams store. Sherwin Williams is always runnings sales, but you should be able to get a gallon of this in the low $20s.

3/8 roller nap? You may be dipping to often..however. wooster makes a 3/8 nap that holds as much as a 1/2 in. and is awesome for ceilings

Give a 1" Lambs wool roller a try , see what you think , goes a LONG way inbetween dips .... I'll even use a 1 1/4" ..... ceiling dead flats works just fine , but if it's a "sticky paint" I'll use polyester blend or something (Lambswool doesn't like "stickypaints")..... I do not use a 3/8 on ANY walls or ceilings unless it is a smooth wall or ceiling and any stiple might show .... I have no problems with thick lambs wool rollers and I slop that paint on and roll a LOT before I dip again .... it works very well .... I swear by lambswool and I'll usually put a tad of floetrol and water if need be just to make the paint nice and buttery smooth and roll like crazy , very very few "holidays" if any .... By the way , Thanks for the tip on the promar ceiling paint , gonna give it a try first chance I get

@@SuperVassarBrothers I don't think you'll notice a difference in final finish , will look the same , and you'll get a lot more coverage from a roller dip , might want a splash of floetrol and even a little splash of water in it , I always throw some in , it helps flow and get rid of "holidays" ..... You won't go back to a 3/8 or 1/2 once you do this on textured walls and ceilings .... only on smooth walls or ceilings yes , 3/8 or 1/2

Hi Pearl, $70 is too high for that paint. We pay substantially less since we have a contractor discount. They do run 40% off sales all the time tho, plus there is a massive paint shortage of that paint right now. For ceilings if you can go with a flat paint, they work the best. Good luck!

If you have warm walls do not use this. Its super blue. Ceiling Bright White SW 7007. Had painters use this today. Its way too blue. Using high reflective white tomorrow. Think thats too white? Extra white promar 200 tinted HRW. I just want a white ceiling no undertones.

You can get Promar tinted to whatever you want. 7006 Extra White is a solid option. We’ve never had an issue with stock Promar. It takes on the characteristics of the light reflected in the room, but that’s just been my experience.

@@SuperVassarBrothers I didnt try extra white, it does look a little less blue on the fan deck, but still blue. Im going with promar 200 in high reflective white. Originally they did ceiling white which was too blue but also didnt cover nicotine stains. Today they put a stain blocker one, sherwin extreme water based in “white” which looks way better and no blue. No clue what white that exactly is. Tomorrow the high reflective white goes on. I dk why ceiling white exists like that, it might not look bad against a grey wall, but looks terrible against warm wall imo. Sherwin makes so stupid decisions. Having eggshell not exist or be same as satin is a stupid one lol

Please be warned: Wife and I have years of experience painting and have liked SW in years past but they have clearly cheapened the recipe. It's thinner and doesn't cover well at all. It was a complete waste of money. We deeply regret starting a large project with this garbage paint. We will never buy SW again. This paint is the equivalent of a dollar store guitar. By the way, they also reduced the amount in the can from 128 oz (1 gal) to 124 oz, but still charge $55 per can.

How can you think this is the best ceiling paint. It leaves a nice finish, goes on well but this does not cover in one coat. Behr paint can cover in one coat but does not have a good finish. These days I feel like a paint should be able to cover in one coat.

Used Behr ceiling paint from HD with purple label. Absolute garbage learned my lesson to buy better quality paint. I sprayed it, but had to fix some drywall and rolled it after and could not make lap marks disappear.

no sense in mentioning a "3/8 nap roller" because not all ceilings are smooth , so different rollers for different ceilings , and to be honest , I never use a 3/8 nap on much of anything "walls or ceiling" that has a texture ..... 1/2" minimum and frankly 3/4" minimum .... I don't like dippin rollers all day and I use lamb wool , damn near paint 1/4 ceiling in one dip

I have painted professionally for over 30 years. SW has some great paint. The paint you chose here is the absolute worst paint I’ve ever dipped a brush in. Horrible mileage and it won’t cover itself. Absolutely shit paint in a can. SW has several other paints not labeled as ceiling paint that are far better options.

Hi Jake. We don't hear many complaints about Promar ceiling. In our experience it performed much better than Promar 200 flat, Promar 400 flat, quali cote flat, Eminence flat, and Master hide flat. We used super paint flat and it does cover well but since we do two coats on most ceilings the Promar Ceiling had better bang for the buck. If your looking to get something done in one coat I could understand using a more expensive flat paint. In our experience we ended up doing two coats with most high end flat paints and thats why we settled with Promar ceiling. We love it and use it all the time. To each is own my friend. All paints can be "ceiling" white with a touch of blue added to make them brighter. PM ceiling is very flat and does touch up well but, I found it to cover very very poorly...even with 2+ coats. Hi Eric. We haven't used CHB so I don't have an informed opinion on that product. Maybe it does touch up better, but to my knowledge is a more new construction builder grade paint. There are two types of painters. Those with a clean brush and clothes and those with dirty brush and clothes. The best painters I've known have come from both sides. Really when it comes down to it if you are doing hard indoor/outdoor commercial jobs or outdoor residential your brush should look like shit because if it doesn't you are worrying too much about your brush.
