I’m just seeing this now and love your review. New sub now! I have PTSD and my psychologist suggested the MUSE for me. She personally uses one. My mom got me the Muse2 for Christmas and just in a month I’ve noticed such a positive change in my anxiety level and being able to actually use less medication for panic attacks. I didn’t think there was anything that could help.

I just want to ask you one question: nowadays, some time after you uploaded this video in 2018, do you still think the same and would these advices be the same to buy an affordable EEG device in 2020 with artistic and audiovisual purposes? Really liked this video! We've had multiple BCI projects at University of Florida, and for the most part we used Emotiv's Insight. I personally preferred using the Muse for its sleek design, ease of use and very little discomfort; but their developer and research tools took a lot of time to support their 2016 headset. Muse I/O is still unsupported for the 2016 headset. That really limits the capability of using an OSC with something like OpenVibe for the 2016 headset. Of course, there are 3rd party solutions available to this, but that says a lot about the company itself when they launch a new version of their headset without developer support for 2+ years after the launch.

Actually that's exactly what I'm looking into right now. I have an idea about detecting and using one (derived) parameter from the eeg data, and considering to buy one of these to experiment with. But official documentation says no support for dev.tools for Muse 2016, which can mean only that they stopped active development and support of the device and focused on selling whatever they produced so far. This is frustrating :(

Curious which device would you recommend for athletic performance training to improve focus and concentration through neuro sensory feedback?
@danieltheisen5944
@danieltheisen5944 5 жыл бұрын
What would you recommend for a High School AP Psychology Teacher looking to make Neuroscience a little less abstract/textbooky and instead being able to have his students take a hands on approach... I was looking at Emotiv and while I personally really want the EPOC+ just because it's so cool, this would be a personal purchase not a school purchase and the EPOC+ is a "bit" out of my price range. I was thinking about the Emotiv Insight (I have not seen your videos on this device, but will take a look while awaiting a response)? What I would be doing with the students with the tech is mostly, but not entirely, looking at each other's EEG raw readouts and identifying different brainwave patterns/frequencies. Can the Insight provide raw readouts without purchasing the pro subscription (maybe through third party software) or is that the only way? I know you said the Muse can give the raw readouts, but it seems (from this video and from their own site) that the Muse's focus is specifically on meditation... Are there any apps for the Muse that would work with just general active behavior (so we could do things like comparing a students brainwave activity while shooting hoops to sitting in class). My concern is that I may run into the problem I ran into a few years ago when, with an older EEG meditation device, the app would stop recording data if you were way more active than you were supposed to be while meditating (I'm sure the device was more than capable of recording the data, but the app, which focused on meditation, purposefully stopped the recording if you tried using it for something other than meditating). Can you use the Muse for things other than meditation and if so which Windows applications will I need to do so? Or should I go for the Insight and find a third party app or maybe even buy the subscription software? Or should I just go for broke and splurge on the EPOC+ and its software? Any thoughts? Edit (about 2 hours after my original post): I did a little more research of my own (In addition to what I knew before I asked the question) and found that Muse has their own software called "Direct" which is pretty close to what I am looking for... It is less focused on Meditation and more so about collecting raw data. It's subscription price is also significantly lower than Emotiv's at $24 for a 1 year subscription. Based off what you know about the Emotiv and the Muse, what would you recommend?
@CodyRallMD
@CodyRallMD 5 жыл бұрын
It was funny as I read your post, because Muse Direct was exactly the thing I was going to recommend. It is a nice program and I am going to be making a video on it soon. Glad that you found it an attractive option. I think the comfortability of wear and ease of use will make it a more attractive in a classroom setting compared to the other devices. Awesome to hear it being used in this way!
@danieltheisen5944
@danieltheisen5944 5 жыл бұрын
Does Muse Direct allow for any sort of brain mapping? Like does the program allow us to look at what parts of the brain are firing like the Emotiv device can do with their software (I know some of the Emotiv software has the ability to look at like 3D models of the brain based on the collected EEG data... although I guess that's because it has so many more nodes on it)? The EEG is certainly the main thing I am looking for, but it would also be especially useful to have students be able to see a model of the brain lighting up in different areas for different activities. I'm guess Muse can't do it, but let me know if you know. Thank you!

hey :-) great video,as usual :-) so this answered my question about which device 2 buy... its gonna b the muse since i m interested only in meditation... but there r still a few questions i have... 1. what is the max recording time of the muse?i thought it would b 5 hrs since that is the battery life it has,but in 1 of ur videos u said its max 45 minutes...this is very important 2 me since i wanna know more about my brainwaves when i reach the point of detaching completely from my body,which can take up 2 5hrs,so its important that i have also a 5hr recording option... 2.what is the data muse uses for the 3 states - active/neutral/calm -? i dont wanna just trust them blindly that they found the ultimate truth,specially since this field is still filled with many question-marks...what ratio of the different brainwaves do they choose for those states? 3.its great that muse has this neurofeedback with the waves,hard,soft,and birds,but i want another option where there isnt a constant sound so i can withdraw my attention more and more,so i would need the option of choosing shorter sounds...does muse app have this option,2 choose sounds and connect them 2 the brainwaves u want?and if not,is there an app out there which can do this? 4.my goal in meditation is 2 completely transcend physical body consciousness so i want a system like muse but with the option 2 choose the brainwaves and a short sound signaling when i enter different brainwaves,so for example if beta waves r the dominant wave then i choose a certain sound,same for alpha,theta and delta,just like its done with the muse app,but this way its more detailed,i would know with every sound which brainwave is strongest,so i can work on getting 2 delta and also c what is happening in my mind or meditation when i lose a certain state and go higher in frequency etc so is there an app that can do this?after i saw u mentioning muse monitor i looked it up,and found that it records all the different brainwaves but i think it doesnt have a neurofeedback option,right? or how about muse direct for ios?does it record all data and does it have a neurofeedback option?went 2 the appstore but the description wasnt very good... 5.so is there an app available which can give me what i need or do i have 2 download the SDK ,learn how 2 create an app,and do it myself??!! :-( lol oh,and 1 more :-) watching ur interview with Michael Decaire...he mentions in the beginning the test they did with the monk,and that his brainwaves dropped so crazy fast...did he tell u the results?which brainwaves were dominant,or the percentages,like x% delta,x%theta,x% alpha etc?

I am a classical guitar enthusiast looking to improve my performance. I have recently immersed myself in the deep/deliberate learning research of Anders Ericsson and many of the pop psych books available on achieving Peak Performance. I am now interested in using a personal EEG device to assist me in achieving optimal mental states while playing guitar. So my question is which of the devices out there would be most suited to monitoring what my brain is doing when I’m in a great flow state and really ‘one with my guitar’ so to speak versus those frustrating times when I cant even get through a scale cleanly? Thanks for putting such useful information out here for the general public!

I would use the Muse to meditate before getting into your flowstate guitar sessions :) . The movement during sessions might mess up the signal, but I know the Muse 2 is getting software ready for mobile EEG. But for now I would suggest meditating with the Muse before playing to enhance your flowstate.

This is the first I’ve looked into this but for me it’s about my sleep analysis. My sleep pattern is not mainstream and professional diagnostic measures have failed me in the past since you generally only get one night of data. As someone with ADHD, I NEED more. Lol. Therefore two questions: 1. Although you mentioned meditation and wellness/self improvement, how well are these devices geared towards being able to accomodate sleep analysis? 2. Privacy, you didn’t address that at all. Do these devices require you to upload anything to third party servers? I don’t want any data transmitted away from my devices at all unless I had an opt-in option for something that may be desirable. Is the data stored and used only in your device or computer or is it mandatory to send it elsewhere for processing??

Hi, I'm interested in developing brain-computer interface programs and was wondering which emotiv headset to buy. I either want to purchase the insight or the epoc. I just wanted to know what are the limitations of the insight compared with the epoc and whether these are enough for me to opt for the more expensive device. I am a total beginner to the world of personal EEG devices and applications and so I'm really not so sure about which is the best option for me. Whilst I have some understanding of how these devices and also the brain function, I haven't got a biology degree or anything and my area of expertise is in computer systems and software development so I'm not as in the know regarding the biological processes going on and how this technology uses them to gather data. You're videos have been very helpful in developing my understanding and I thank you. I would be greatly apperciative if you could advise me on which device to purchase (bearing in mind it will be my first experience with this technology) Thank you

Hi Cody, I wanted to start a project of playing simple games like pokemon using EEG, by the information on the video I think the Emotiv products would work best. Although I was planning on getting the raw data and coding some mapping to the buttons, I am still researching to see what has been done like this so I am not sure if I would need the Emotiv pro access. Also I have a concern regarding the buttons because I would need maybe 6 inputs and I noticed a lot of the uses I have seen are maybe two (forward and backwards for a car for example) so I am not sure if this is a limitation for all these devices. Do you have any recommendations for which device can help me? Thanks

Sounds like a challenging project! Maybe start with Emotiv Insight for the basics and increase in complexity and cost of device from there? (Epoch then FLEX Emotiv) ?? That's what I would do.

Hi Cody - Great videos! I notice you don't have any reviews on the HeartMath Inner Balance ear clip and app. What are your thoughts on it?

Hi Carla. I have heard good things about HeartMath and have seen it in action a few times. There's definitely a lot of research supporting heart rate variability measures of fitness, ect. However, there has been so much going on with EEG Devices that I have not had the chance to make a review video for it yet. Good to know there is a demand for it, I will look into it more. A lot of these devices are about to integrating all these modalities into single units, so more attention needs to be made to individual components like heart rhythm and how it might correspond to EEG :)

@@tweeniebee3032 I found better economy and application with a Polar H7 I bought used. I also have the Muse1 now and they pair quite well with their respective apps...giving me say HRV breathing with Elite app while I meditate on Muses sessions. I should also add that I have to use two tablets to drive that, maybe one expensive modern one would work if it allows more than one bluetooth...yet I have two low cost ones and they work great.

I just discovered you today. What a font of information! Might you know if neurofeedback could be useful for treating insomnia? I do not have anxiety about sleep (no rumination or busy thoughts at bedtime) but my brain is in a constant state of hyperarousal. I'm curious if neurofeedback can help me calm it down. I don't want to simply track my sleep. I want to retrain my brain.

Hey Cody thanks for your videos. I'm not new to meditation but I want to get better and I liked the idea of a biofeedback headband. I bought the Muse2 based on your videos, and after doing a couple sessions with the Muse2, I found out that I'm already spending 90%+ of my time in the "calm" range and virtually none in "active". Are there other metrics or combinations of metrics in Muse's platform that I can use to get better or have I essentially reached the limit of Muse's technological biofeedback capability? If so, are there other devices that are more advanced? My ultimate goal is to spend uninterrupted time in theta and eventually feel like pure consciousness (and ultimately heal myself) but I'm wondering if Muse2 technology and metrics are too "superficial" or maybe I'm better than I thought, but I don't think that's the case. Thanks!

@@WealthMe888 hi Denise I decided to return it because I found the shifting volumes of the white noise pretty distracting. I know that each of the 5 brain waves is related to attention, memory, meditation, etc. I want to carry out a project where using different pedagogical strategies I can observe the waves in real time and be able to analyze behavior, I want the signal of the complete waves, that can be obtained either by means of electronics and doing a little engineering, which of the devices can you recommend. I want to observe the brain waves as I use videos, animations, teaching a class, and observe and then theorize and create a teaching model. Which of all the devices do you recommend? thanks

Hello, I just discovered you and I really like your videos. I would like to consult you on something. I want to submit a project to a competition with an EEG device. In the project, I will convert brain waves into motion with robotic coding. For this, I only have a budget of 500 dollars for the EEG device. I thought about using the Emotiv insight model, but things like license fees got in the way. I guess I can't communicate the device with the computer without getting a license. I don't have complete information on this subject, so I'm in the middle for the device I will buy. Which is the best device suitable for my budget for the project I will do, can you inform me exactly how is the license issue for Emotiv insight? Thank you.

The Emotiv MN8 seems to be targeting that problem. Unfortunately they have told me they are focusing on marketing to businesses right now instead of individual consumers. For now I would recommend meditating with the Muse Headband to build your attention skills for later in the day when you do not have the Headband on (will not be effective to wear while working).
