Which Pokémon Deserve to Have Triple Types? (Alola)

The Pokémon from Alola lean wholly into their themes and niches which can make for some interesting choices to say the least, but that also means that some of them will be prime candidates for the idea of embodying three different types! It was honestly kind of hard to narrow down so let me know your top choices!

The center of the sun has a core of iron, as far as we know. The hottest iron glows white. Fire is still a good choice, but that's where steel comes from.

The sun is basically nuclear fusion and the inner layer of the sun is ionize so it also has plasma which is heating up electricity, so in reality it should be fire, steel, electric, psychic. Which it would have a 6x weakness to ground, A little bit of pocket sand would put it straight into a coma 😂.

Dhelmise's Pokedex entry says "what appears to be green seaweed is actually it's body" therefore water would make more sense than steel since Dhelmise is just attached to an anchor, and the anchor isn't it's real body.

Actually, no. The water itself doesnt make up Dhelmise, just the kelp and seaweed that possesses the anchor. I heard a theory as to what Dhelmises origins are, and it might be this: The kelp and seaweed makes it a Grass type, and the spirit, possibly the captain of a sunken ship, possesses the wheel, anchor, and the kelp to create Dhelmises body to explain its Ghost typing. The reason why Dhelmise works better as a Steel type instead of a Water type is actually pretty simple. Look at its body. Its the wheel of a ship and the ships anchor. The body itself is made of a rusted metal that is binded together by a soul and the kelp, as i already said. Its not immediately a Steel type because Ghost-Grass works best thematically, as the soul possesses the kelp and not the wheel and anchor. However, its Steelworker ability allows for a STAB boost to any Steel moves it has, like Anchor Shot. Its the first time Gamefreak made a Pokemon triple typed by technicality. It doesnt get the resistances and strengths of Steel, which its probably better for balancing, but it is technically more of a Steel type than any other type, let alone Water

@@varuhash50 The point is that the seaweed itself can quality as part Water type, since it's an aquatic plant. Meanwhile, only the seaweed is possessed (or otherwise a spirit), *not* the anchor (otherwise the anchor would be part of its body, which the Pokédex entry debunks), but it gets Steel STAB with Steelworker due to using the anchor with most of its attacks.

@@Compucles just being an aquatic plant is a stretch though. Cradily, for example, is a plant-like animal that lives in the deep oceans, yet its not a Water type and theres a chance it never was a Water type. Another example is Grapploct and Crabrawler. Theyre both pure Fighting types that live solely in or near bodies of water and hunt in the water, yet arent Water type just because they live in water. Kelp is also very animal-like in and of itself, as its not an actual plant as ive very recently learned but a type of overgrown multicellular algae. Theyre more animal-like than anything else, yet still very much so a type of plant, albeit a proto-plant if you will. If anything, the argument shouldnt be the kelp, but instead the anchor and wheel themselves. Theyre rusted, meaning the Oxygen in the water reacted with the metal to cause erosion. But any way you see it, Dhelmise can certainly be created out of the water. Take kelp, preferably already possessed, and put it next to a couple ship parts. Theyll eventually create a Dhelmise on their own out of the water.

So I did some quick research, & apparently Blachephalon’s ghost type may come from the fact that it’s ability to remove its head might be based on the Dullahan, combine with that when it explodes it’s head it steals its opponents life force.

Might as well get Inceneroar the Fighting type. I know it's based on a pro wrestler (and think the Dark Type and it's category as the Heel Pokémon is brilliantly done) but wrestling is a type of Fighting and it gets a nice amount of Fighting moves, so it would make a lot of sense. Plus it would be fun to troll people who complained too much about the Fire/Fighting starter trend.

@@emperorcubone Incineroar isn't a Fighting type because of the kind of wrestler it's based on, it's Dark type for a reason. Incineroar is based on a heel wrestler, heck, it's even known as The Heel Pokémon. A heel wrestler is a wrestler who plays the role of an antagonist or villain, so literally what the Dark type is all about. Its pokédex entries even talk about how mean it is. You could still give it the Fighting type but the Dark type is more than justified under this lens.

@@emperorcubone To add to what RJS said, what differentiates Dark and Fighting type in practice is their adherence to the rules of combat. A Dark Type is a cheater, through and through, using below the belt practice. Of course there HAVE been dual Dark and Fighting types, but their concepts are generally based on Gangs which have some codes of honor while being malicious at other points in time. Incineroar on the meantime, only cheats. It's cheating to play to the crowd, but it's non-fire combat does revolve around cheating.

I think Decidueye makes sense if it can fly, but not very well. When flying type uses a flying move, they get STAB bonus, because they are good at flying (I know there are exceptions, but for most pokemons it makes sense). So Decidueye can use flying attacks but not that well, because it's mostly a terrestial pokemon.

I’m pretty sure in terms of raw numbers Grass is the worst type in terms of types that resist it, and types that are super effective against it (tied with rock on defense and bug on offense I believe) but at least it’s better than normal because it can hit things super effectively and has resistances. Still not great though. I wish it was better. Especially since Fire and Water are both remembered as being pretty great types

This is a Dhelmise appreciation comment. I don't hear people talk about it much, despite how cool it is, maybe because of how hard it is to catch in Alola and in Galar, or its lack of presence in VGC. But the thing is _cool_ . Its signature move has quite a beautiful animation in SwSh, too. Easily one of my favorite 'mons.

Levitate is just an added Ground immunity and an invitation to Sky Battles. It doesn't add the other weaknesses and resistances that Flying types have.

If Dhelmise was Grass/Ghost/Water it would: Resist ground, and steel. Quad Resist water. Be Weak to flying, ghost, and dark. Be Immune to normal, and fighting. and if Dhelmise was four types (Grass/Ghost/Steel/Water) it would: Resist rock, grass, psychic, ice, dragon, and fairy. Quad Resist steel, and water. Be Weak to fire, ghost, and dark. Be Immune to poison, normal, and fighting.

I probably said it before, but Flygon is another Pokemon up there with Dhelmise as "is totally justified to have four types". In Flygon's case, it could totally be a Ground/Dragon/Flying/Bug.

@@emperorcubone there’s nothing really fire like with solgaleo other than the fact that it glows and its steel type signature move shoots the steel pokemon out of a sun-like ball of energy, that is besides the fact it pulls its mane shape from depictions of the sun in media. So if you’re gonna use those as reasons for the fire type, then the fact that lunala pulls its shape from the moon and the signature move is it shooting a beam from magical moon stuff (the moon being made of rock, as the main argument for the fire type on solgaleo is that the sun is made of fire) should be apt reason to give it the rock type

Wingull is right after Taillow in the Pokedex, it literally has identical stats flipped between physical/special. Taillow and Wingull are the regional bird pair that represents the theme of land and sea.

I would definitely make Lunala a psychic/ghost and dark or water. Water cause the moon controls the tides and dark because the moon comes out when it's dark. Then I would make Incineroar a fire/dark and fighting because Incineroar is a wrestler.
