Thank you so much @malcytull and that is a good choice. I like the crunchiness of that. A little goes a long way.

We are using the Benson's salt substitutes and seasonings. All natural herbs and spices, and no potassium chloride or other chemicals. Their table salt substitute is called Table Tasty. We like it.
@thecookingdoc3 ай бұрын
@denisemayer51 I will have to try those and do my own little taste test. Sometimes the substitutes can taste a little strange to me, so I am excited to try that out.

Why? Our heart pumps with sodium ions and relaxes with potassium ions. Zero Sodium and Potassium = STOPPED HEART. So I am using HEART SALT that has 44% Sodium Chloride + 56% Potassium Chloride (+ trace thaumatin to reduce bitter taste of Potassium Chloride) I check with a pocket ECG and a Mercurial sphygmomanometer + stethoscope to make sure that my electrolytes balance and BP are normal. I am 76yo. (MY validated Omron Electronic BP monitor is NOT as accurate). One of our church member ate one banana a day to add potassium. His ECG plot indicated mild hyperkalimia (a little too much potassium).

Thanks, Doc, this was a great video and an important topic for those of us who have kidney disease. I just finished for the third time, in two years, recovering from minimal change disease. What a nondescript name for a disease. Thanks again for all you do for our community.

Dr, I haven't added salt to a dish at a restaurant in over 50 years due to Blood Pressure issues. I have added limited salt to a pot of soup or other dishes, using salty food instead ot salt works. Canned veggies also give more than enough salt for any dish in my opinion.

@ronaldguffee8696 It sounds like you are doing great. I think that is a great tip about the canned vegetables. Thank you for sharing.

Salts from Britany or Celtic sea salt.

Since I'm not using salt to cook with, I enjoy finishing some foods with a tiny bit of Himalayan salt. Its satisfying. I'm Stage 4 CKD with a eGFR 22 so salt subs aren't an option but they taste terrible anyway. I work really hard to keep my sodium intake under 1200 and it's really hard so salt is special use only.

You are doing great @lynnallen1315 - I really enjoy the pink salt too. It is fun, colorful and I like the crunch it gives.

What do you think about Celtic sea salt?

If you like it - then you should use it sparingly. It is very similar to most other salts. It has a tiny bit of minerals versus table salt.

Table salt and 3-5 drops of Lugol’s in your morning coffee!

Have you actually read the ingredients list on regular table salt? Mine has sugar and calcium silicate, a non caking agent. Personally, , I would prefer salt that's pure salt. Also, those minerals in real natural salt have nearly 80 different trace minerals. Yes tiny amounts, but its better than nothing. .

I want to know if Celtic salt is better or Himalayan?
@thecookingdoc3 ай бұрын
That is tough, there don't seem to be much difference except pink salt has a tiny bit of minerals in it. I think it just boils down to your preference.

ALL three (Himalayan pink salt, Celtic salt, & Redmond salt) have too little Potassium and Magnesium to be a good electrolyte. Taking too much of them raises BP because of too much sodium and too little potassium We need to take in 5:1 Potassium: Sodium. Impossible with those salts. Serving Size 1.5 g Redmond’s Himalayan Celtic Chloride 913.8 mg 885.45 mg 693.75 mg Sodium 568.6 mg 575 mg 530.76 mg Potassium 1.5 mg 5.25 mg 3.11 mg Sulfur 3 mg 18.6 mg 11.19 mg Calcium 7.5 mg 6.07 mg 2.92 mg Iron .45 mg .058 mg .16 mg Phosphorus .045 mg .0001 mg - Iodine .045 mg .15 mg - Magnesium 1.8 mg .24 mg 6 mg Zinc .003 mg .00357 mg .03 mg Copper .003 mg .00084 mg .02 mg Manganese .003 mg .000405 mg .02 mg So I am using HEART SALT that has 44% Sodium Chloride + 56% Potassium Chloride. I check with a pocket ECG and a Mercurial sphygmomanometer + stethoscope to make sure that my HEART electrolytes balance and BP are normal. I am 76yo. (MY PRO=GRADE Omron Electronic BP monitor is NOT as accurate). FYI: I used the ECG to test a Church member who ate 1 banana every day and found he has mild hyperkalimia (a little too much Potassium ions).

It is amazing Cliff how our taste buds change over time. I agree with you. Sometimes going out to eat is difficult to me because of how much sodium restaurants use in their foods to make them appealing.

"An Analysis of the Mineral Composition of Pink Salt Available in Australia" by Flavia Fayet-Moore etal 2020 found the "Peruvian Pink Salt" had a lead content of 2.59 milligrams/kilogram, which was above the maximum metal contaminant level of 2 mg/kg for salt. And according to the study: No other pink salt tested exceeded the maximum level (mg/kg) for metal contaminants (arsenic, cadmium, or mercury) or the UL set by FSANZ and the NRV, respectively.
