Soccer is FAR tougher! The players are so strong that the barest touch brings excruciating pain to either the shin or the face and the players are so tough that as soon as a whistle is blown they can ignore that tremendous pain and continue playing as if nothing had happened. You dont see that level of physical ability in NRL or NFL players.

I grew up playing and loving both. But i can say hands down rugby is far more physically demanding. I'm Samoan, grew up in Samoa playing rugby and here in the states too. But football was the ticket here so I played it as well. Even though I love football. No doubt Rugby is harder in every way. America did a good job of making football more marketable. Pads to make players hit harder shorter field, less men, different personnel for O and D and special teams, time outs, quarters, official timeouts, commercial timeouts, injury timeouts. I literally have never been tired on a football field lol but I can name a few dozen times I was tired within the first 20 minutes of a rugby game and thought I was going to pass out lol. Love football, but Rugby for me!

@AMF59

@Will I get what you're saying, but if you're good at football you don't get smacked from anywhere lol. You'll know where vulnerabilities are and be prepared for them. Ive been blind sided a few times but it never took me off the field. I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've been truly rocked in football. But I have made bad tackles that concussed me multiple times and ended my game in rugby. I was pretty good at football, I had scholarships to play D1 I turned them down to play rugby. Dumb decision on my part as football is a great networking tool if you don't make it to the league. But i digress. Anytime i got even a little tired in football, I would tap my helmet and a sub would come on for me. In rugby, my coach would tell me to pick my nuts up and keep playing lol.

@Will yup... football players can just throw their body at someone hard enough to get them to hit the deck. But in rugby there are rules and techniques that you have to be conditioned to do so protect yourself, and the opponent without getting penalized over and over for 80+ minutes. Were as in football, playing defense, you only on the field about half the time with no restrictions. Targeting and helmet to helmet tackle rules and tackling penalties are new, those kinds of rules always applied in rugby. You just gotta be a more well rounded and conditioned athlete for rugby or league. But in football you can make a 53 man roster just for your size or speed compared to Rugbys 23 man roster. With limited spots on the team, people have to be good in multiple areas. So yea, if we talking about difficulty, then Rugby>Football. But salary Football>Rugby lol

Going to weigh in as an American here. I grew up a massive fan of the NFL (and still am) but moved to Australia in 2008 and have followed League here (Go the mighty Panthers!) I have never played either code, so feel free to take anything I say with a grain of salt. To me, league is by far the tougher of the two. Not even in the same ballpark. Granted, the hits in gridiron can be absolutely catastrophic and devastating, but in terms of brute strength and endurance, league takes the cake by a mile. Main differences is gridiron requires a very short/quick burst of speed and agility and incredible pinpoint accuracy while league requires absolute raw power and speed. Both codes are amazing sports for very different reasons but “toughness” points go heavily in leagues favor.

imo nfl has foward passes so when a runner or reciever is about to get the ball in front of the line of scrimmage u are immediately surrounded by all defenders in the back field so while your waiting for the ball to arrive u dont know where all of the defenders are coming from so when u get hit u are not fully prepared for it where as nrl u generally know where the defenders are coming from cos your running into a waiting line of defense that in itself makes it tougher cos you know where they are coming from and engage them anyway where as nfl sometimes your running with a flat battery in your flash light. also people mention pads ill say this nrl can not be played at the pace that it is if you had all that extra weight to carry. in summary both are great the real question is which is more entertaining. also as i said about nfl in nrl we have bombs and a fullback has to catch it with the whole defense bearing down on him literally meet you while your trying to catch the ball that is having a flashlight with no battery. thats scary

Nice video ! Maybe it has been already said but here are my two cents ( even i played rugby for 15 years) : football players wear a protective gear but can get hit from anywhere whether they have the ball OR NOT. In rugby, only the player who carries the ball can get tacked, so he is prepared (most of the time) whereas the football player is less to hits that can come from anywhere hence the protection. In the end both are tough but I think the endurance you need to play 2x40min relentlessly and the warrior mindset you have to be in to do it make rugby tougher.

The NRL is easily tougher, not just from hits and the sustained period of ball in play. But it is the sheer effort on top of effort plays that have to be made by both the defending and attacking teams that seperate the NRL and NFL. I only wish more Americans watched Rugby League.

Arcane slashed, blood everywhere and the worse concussion I've ever seen, I looked that dude dead in the eyes and there was nothing in there... if you ever see that you'll know what I mean when I say that's the scariest thing I've seen on a field... then you account for the fact that union has a lot more rules to make it safer compared to when the old timers played while NRL is still wild af... also seen my fair share of players with dislocated shoulders just popping it back in and playing on like nothing happened.... although it's less common now especially with pros because you have a team doctor and medic that will decide whether or not you can resume play.

In NRL the tackles and hits are relentless for 80mins, minimum stoppages , plus the explosiveness of Fullbacks, Halves and Wingers remains for the full game despite the high level of endurance and lactic build up. NRL players don't hold back with their tackles. Front Rowers go in with intent.......... Pads or no pads, it makes no difference, the speed of NRL, the aggression of the game is Top Tier. Both incredibly tough games. As is Rugby. What's understated is the continuous nature of Rugby league and Rugby. Limited reserve players, limited changes permitted, some players have to play the full game ( some are substituted once). Also note that RL and Rugby players have to fulfill multiple roles and tasks. Helmets etc are pretty low on the hierarchy of toughness indicators to me. Ability to tackle, make breaks, ruck, maul, scrum, lineout and then do it again, and again is the key difference.

I got more injuries in soccer, but that was because of how many years I played, but in 1 year of NFL...1 hyper-extended knee, 2 concussions and middle toe on left foot crushed by defensive lineman being pushed back on me...at 5'8", 70kg / 85kg (junior / adult playing weights) and 13.0 sec 100m I much preferred rugby league...it cost less for the gear, easy to get a game together with mates and less chance of a bad injury...never minded the small cuts and bruises in Rugby.

You would need to have a common selection criteria to score on to be able to truly decide, which is near impossible due to the differences in the sports. They are both tough in their own way. I grew up playing Rugby League, and still play Masters (basically old men trying to re-live their youth with slightly modified rules) so my opinion may be slightly biased. I had a staff member that played American Football and we would often discuss the differences in the sports. One major difference is the tackling with the head that happens in the NFL, which I was blown away by. One of the first things we teach kids when playing Rugby League is the correct position of the head in a tackle, so that you don't hurt yourself and knock yourself out. The stoppages in the game, the need of only short bursts of energy and power, multiple teams (Offensive, Defensive, Specials etc..), the length of the season would all suggest that NFL players lack endurance. That being said, their training regimes are incredibly tough and they train specifically for their role in the sport. So NFL players could be considered more of a 'specialist'. Rugby League players are more of a 'generalist', as they must be able to perform both offensive and defensive skills throughout the game, and depending on your position will most likely be required to play the full 80 minute game without any stoppages, outside of the half-time break, with endurance and fatigue playing a major part in every game. Both codes have their big 'tough' men (in Rugby League the forwards), and the more elusive and athletic 'show ponies' (in Rugby League the backs). Based on the completeness of having to handle both offensive and defensive, playing the duration of the game with minimal breaks, a 27 round competition, before the play-offs I would tend to lean my vote towards Rugby League being the tougher sport.

The NRL is not RUGBY UNION it's actually a tougher form of sport called rugby league. The key points is that there is no rucks or mauls no line outs and there is 6 tackle limit where you must hand over the ball to opponents. Anyone who has seen NRL being played understands immediately that this is the toughest sport outside boxing and UFC in fact many rugby league make the switch from league to boxing and mma quite effectively. Every player must have extreme endurance , ball skills , tackling skills , the teams even have proper wrestling coaches as there is a high amount of wrestling in the tacking side of then sport. Ño pads is clearly a Mark of toughness as people who watch NRL see straight away that the players don't hold back they play as hard or if not harder than NFL players and they play for 80 mins only one stoppage. It takes 80 mins to play rugby league and 60 mins to play NFL but that 60 mins of NFL takes 3 hours because of the breaks and slowness the lack of constant contact by the whole team at all times.......... I live to watch the NFL or college football as for me I still enjoy it in a different way than league but league is 100% a better spectators sports as well with the constant action.

As an Australian raised playing Rugby and Rugby League (they are 2 slightly different games) I was fascinated by American football, which was known as "gridiron" when I was a kid. I liked the look of the armour and those decorated helmets seemed cool to my youthful eyes. Parochialism held me firmly in its grasp so that whenever comparisons were made, I would extoll the superiority of Rugby League over gridiron, even though I had zero experience of the American game other than what was gleaned from television. There were very few "cross-overs". I'm using that term to refer to someone from the American game coming to play Rugby League in Australia and/or someone from our code crossing the Pacific to play over there. Manfred Moore, a black bloke from the states game to try his hand for Newtown in the 1970s, but despite his impressive physical statistics, he was not able to create much of a splash in 1st-class Rugby League. Mark Harris, a big, fast running back, from Eastern Suburbs, with a long punt-kick tried a season in America but also met with little success. So the debate raged on. Those in League's corner argued that the high-velocity impact of gridiron was made possible more because of the padding than because of player abandon of caution. For some reason abandonment of caution was a marker of toughness. We were tougher and that was all there was to it. Such myopic attitudes still exist. That bastion of sound debate and well-considered opinion- the Australian pub- had the gist of it and, so far as Australians were concerned, playing Rugby League on the weekend was a much more demanding way to become crippled in old age than any other pastime you could conjure up. I'm still a fan of Rugby League. I played the other Rugby code, as well but always thought that obscure refereeing decisions played to great a part in the flow of the matches in which I participated. Perhaps it's better to say I never understood the rules; preferring the simplicity of running hard and straight into opposing blokes who were encouraged to take me down. (This pretty much constitutes the rule-book of Rugby League.) As I said above, parochialism is the determining factor in bar-room disputes over the tougher/better game. I'm sure it's that way in the states and long may it remain so as games are replayed by yesterday's athletes and wannabes thousands of miles apart.

Correction into real English: "As an Australian raised playing Rugby Union and Rugby League ..." Australians and Kiwis are the only two groups of people on the planet who refer to Rugby Union as "Rugby." Happens occasionally but usually an accident. Of course in a youtube clip we see more after edits. In NRL there are less subs, so NFL players have more in the tank to go 100%. In NFL you could be hit by more players and can be hit while in the air. Where as in NRL you can’t tackle someone in the air and shoulder charges are banned as well. And as it said in the clip, they have helmets but when helmets clash at high speed the brain shakes and might hit the inside of the scull.

NRL players also do not have the luxury of reseting after every play and have to know both the defensive and offensive plays nor do they have a coach in their ear telling them to do. mix that with the much faster and endurance demanding nature of nrl there is no doubt in my mind that NRL is much harder mentally during the game. it so continious that they have to be switched on all game. the mental side is also not just about how much you need to memorise but how much you need to endure the conditions of the brain. @@Charliethemash I hear you. I disagree though, cause only the QB or you D captain is mic’d up. I have played League and union since I was 5 and Gridiron for the last 17 years, so my opinion is only based off that. In the end, I absolutely love all three sports and appreciate the complexities and toughness of all them. All love and respect bro

I like NFL but endurance, what endurance?, a play is made , then time outs, whole defensive or special teams come on, 2 minutes then a break. That won't happen in NRL, Union or AFL but I ENJOY them all and the athleticism of the players

I played both at University for years. I never got injured playing American Football, I put this down to the pads and helmet. Rugby though... I ended up with a couple of concussions and more than a few broken bones.

NFL American Manfred Moore played rugby league for Newtown Jets in the 70s. When he saw guys being stitched up on the sideline and gladly head into battle again he thought they were insane. Then when he was put in the forwards he ran out over the line so he wouldnt get hit. He said he wouldnt run at the other team and that the game was crazy and he went home.

Rugby league by far is the toughest as it is bone on bone and has a higher fatigue level. I have played both rugby league and rugby union have been hospitalized 5 times with spinal injuries twice for neck and three times with lower back surgeries and loved every minute of it.
@gl3nnium
@gl3nnium Жыл бұрын
Just curious. Did most of your spinal injuries come from Rugby or League? There are a lot of Quads and Parapelegic cases from collapsed scrums. It's sad, but virtualyy every New Zealander knows or has met someone paralysed from Rugby. It's played that insensely here. League scrums have always been puzzling to me as they are essentially uncontested 'Golden Oldies' scrums so you are left thinking 'What's the point?' Other than that League is a solid game.

Big fan of both sports. Played rugby in New Zealand through high school and a little after that for a local club. Never played American football but have watched a lot. Rugby is probably the more "brutal" sport but only because of the lack of padding. On the flip side, some of the hits you see in the NFL will straight up hospitalise people if the pads aren't there. Both are great sports and both require actually pretty different traits in places. More endurance for rugby as the players are on the field all the time and I'd argue more explosiveness for American football, especially on offense when you're staring down a line of massive opponents.

The reason the pads are there is because you have monsters like ray lewis out here literally hitting people with the force of a car crash if the pads were t there people would be getting their heads taken off

i'm just happy that there is NFL and rugby and that they are completely different, just adds to the richness of contact sport. they are both tough in their own unique ways. i hate this competition between the two, we just gotta respect both and what they bring to sport in general.

As a New Zealander, I think both sports are pretty dam tough...rugby and rugby league played without bulky pads and a helmet is a high risk of injuries and American football is equally tough when you can get two helmets colliding at a extreme pace, it's not anything to just right off.

I find this is generally an argument raised by rugby fans. I experienced this in all its glory when I lived in Brisbane for a year. NFL fans and former players of American football (I played TE in college) generally have no issue saying Rugby is tough. There seems to be an inferiority complex on the other side. I can’t count how many times this debate was raised to me without any prompts.

Anyone that plays at an elite level is tough, regardless if its league, union, nfl, even afl. It's always a fun debate though, I grew up watching league, but I also like watching nfl, so I get to watch amazing contact sports all year round and why not, both are great games so enjoy what they have to offer.

League players don’t hold back just because they’re not wearing protective gear. They’re still smashing full force because if you hold back and hesitate you either get injured, miss tackles, and don’t make the team in the first place etc. Put it this way, get a team of NRL players in protective gear to play a game of League and they’d be comfortable. But get a team of NFL players to play with no gear and you will see a lot of hand brakes and fear. I do believe NFL can be a lot tougher though in terms of allowing head contact. In Rugby you’re not allowed to make any contact with the head. In summary, rugby is the tougher game. Put it this way, in America, guys in street fights pull out their guns. In NZ they mostly use their hands to fight. You take away the gun, they will struggle. You take away the protective gear, they won’t be so tough anymore.

Respect to both sport but nrl is alot tougher in the fact that each player must play defence and offense for a continuous period. I been to a few nfl games and tbh it was quite boring having to wait each time the play stopped. In my opinion nfl need to get rid of the pads for safety reasons and have a continuous flow of ball play. America definitely need to play more nrl bc I think they'll be very good at it💯👌 rugby also have different branches like 10s which is even faster equivalent to rugby union 7s. Much respect to both fields and are unique tough in their own right

One of the major differences is that an NFL team is actually 3 teams, offence, defence and special, with a designated kicker only appearing for a kick. An NRL team does it all and their kicker is ever present and fully involved in everything.

The whole I have no regret because I'm wearing protection is speculation. I played Prop/Second Row in my childhood and I used to pride myself on a lack of remorse for my own body. One of my proudest moments was a game winning tackle against a far bigger kid, I was 110kg at the time and probably 5'5, so you could imagine how big the other kid was. Anyway we were defending on our tryline and this guy was just breaking tackle after tackle and pissing me off, I was on the other side of the field and would have to get out of position to mark him up. Eventually I got sick of it, saw they were going to give it to this guy again and he's just going to carry my team over the tryline for an easy 6 points, I wasn't having it. As I said, I went from the right side of the field to the left side of the field, As I predicted, they pass it to this tank of an individual and by that time I was halfway at fullsprint to meet him and then everything went black LMAO, next minute, I'm getting helped off the field by my Halfback and Five-Eight, more black and then I wake up to my couch slapping me on the back saying "Well done mate, you dropped him like a sack of shit". I remember at one point, I wanted to go back on the field and nah, you're not allowed back on after being KO'd XD
