As a huge NRL fan i think this is a pretty decent video to explain NRL to NFL fans. No it doesnt include all the rules but it does explain the basic ones. As for why you havent seen a field goal been done? Its only usually attempted when scores are tied at the end of a game to win the match. Highlight videos usually focus on trys that happen far more often not field goals. But there is nothing more exciting then a field goal ending to win a game.

Yes three years in a row, he was nominated, he is that good of an actor. Russell holds a 25% ownership share in The Rabbitohs NRL team in south Sydney, so he knows the game very well.

After watching the Super Bowl where your game went for 4 hours , last 2 min took 14 min with stoppages. NRL may seem short at 90 min with 1 stoppage at 40min, 10min 1/2 time then 40min. But it is non stop, unlike nfl. And there’s not 40players.

Okay, first lesson; Rugby LEAGUE is one form of Rugby, but there is another form of Rugby, called Rugby UNION. The differences are not huge, but they make for a very different game. The most important thing is to remember that there are TWO different types of RUGBY.

Drop kicks are rare because they aren't worth much BUT they get pulled out in the last minutes to break tied games for the win, unless its a really close game you won't see them and they're hard not only because of the timing but they are made in running play, so defenders are coming quick to block the kick and smash you. 😁

as an nrl fan being australian i watched the superbowl for the first time since it was in vegas and that's where the nrl are going to play, man that was some game don't know all the rules and plays but that last 15 mins of overtime was something special i always thought nfl was to slow with all the stoppages but now i realize that's what makes it so entertaining nfl and nrl are so different from one another it's like chess verse checkers, not sure that the american nfl fan will find nrl that entertaining its fast and furious but playing just after the superbowl could be a bad move

Good one Dar. I played a bit of American Football in Australia - I really love both codes. Speaking of lingo -- here's one for you. If you just say "Rugby", that means "Rugby Union". The short form of "Rugby League" is "League", so you can differentiate between them. They're very similar, and both codes are played on the east coast of Australia, so if you just say "I'm going to the Rugby this arvo", everyone will assume you're off to see the local Rugby Union team, not the local Rugby League team. Funnily enough, we have *three* pretty popular football codes here. If you're in Brisbane, and say "I'm going to the footy this arvo" the correct response is usually "The Broncos (NRL), the Reds (Union), or the Lions (AFL)?"

I’m a massive NRL fan here in Australia 🇦🇺. I’ve been following it since I was a kid and both my boys played it. I suppose it’s like your superbowl but we only have 1 team who has to defend & attack. The game has two halves that go for 40 mins each. The players only get a 15 min break before having to return to play the 2nd half of the game. The object of the game is to get down the field as fast as possible and score a try you call them touchdowns. They only get 5 plays to do this and the have to kick of the sixth or last play to give the ball back to the opposition. If you manage to score a try within the five tackles, you get to kick the goal which is worth two points and you get the ball back again, so depends plays a really big part in this game. I don’t know I don’t wear helmets I only wear headgear and that’s only a few of them..

My brother payed NRL for many years. In a 1987 club game against St George he was tackled 43m from the opposition line, but left unmarked as the the final siren was sounding. He played the ball forward, then kicked a field goal from 42m out in the rain, to break a 20-20 draw.

The reason they have to drop the ball before kicking it for a field goal is to make it harder. Otherwise if you could just kick it normally it would be way too easy. Usually you don't want to go for a drop goal because you always just want to go for the try for 4 or potentially 6 points instead. They only try to make field goal attempts in moments like when it's getting close to half time and they are already ahead or tied just so it makes it that extra bit hard for the opponents to catch up in the second half or in the dying moments of a game where they need that 1 or 2 points to either win or tie the other teams score. The other time when they use them is when the clock does run out on the game and the scores are tied, years ago it would just go down as a draw but these days what happens is 10 more minutes is thrown on the clock (in two 5 minute halves) and it becomes "golden point" rules. Which means the next team to score a single point are the winners, it's basically sudden death. When this happens it's field goal attempt frenzy, every set of 6 is basically an attempt to get the ball close enough and set up position for your best kicker to attempt a field goal. You can also score the points needed in all the other ways if you can too, but this really is when the field goal is most utilised. If those two 5 minute halves end with neither team scoring a point then the game is called a draw, that isn't too often though. The team on offence has a set of 6 tackles to run the ball. You thought it was 5 because you always see the team kick the ball on the 6th play. They do that to get the ball further down the field so that the opponent has to start their set further back into their own territory and further away from their try line. But they don't have to kick it on the 6th tackle, they are free to just run the ball and try to score a try or whatever, but if they do get tackled on the 6th they stop in that exact spot and hand the ball over to the other team and they start their set from there. So that is why it's better to kick it most of the time. (Russell kind of explained that, I wrote this before finishing the video). Playing the ball with your foot is so easy and simple but you would be amazed how many players are just lazy about it and don't bother to use their foot. If the ref sees that it's a penalty and change over of the ball and the coach will definitely rip your head off for that. You also can't fumble the ball on the ground or stand at an angle that isn't forward facing while playing it because those are penalties too.

Watching reactions to our game from other nations, especially in the US don't understand why the defending team is standing that far away from the play the ball & often say things like why are they just standing there while the guys got the ball & not up in his face to tackle. You're right Dar with 'play the ball', I'm an Aussie Rules fan, but watch a bit of league here and there and I think they're supposed to move the ball backwards with their foot but sometimes they miss, pretty sure the refs are pretty loose with that as long as it looks like they've attempted to move the ball backwards with their foot it's fair play, whether their foot touched it or not. I’d love to see rugby league become popular in the USA. I can only imagine how good it would be to watch some of the extremely athletic and talented Americans I’ve seen in the NFL transfer their skills into the NRL. Imagine how devastating some of the forward packs would be with the absolute units they’ve got running around there. The only thing is they will have to get used to playing a full 80 minutes playing both offence and defence, but I’m sure they will rise to the occasion as they do have some good rugby players in the states.

I think this is the main reason people want to see Americans for once check out league or union. Everyone knows USA could do good, they just don't get any exposure to it since they're so absorbed and promote their own stuff

There are two different codes of Rugby, Rugby League and Rugby Union, which to those not familiar with the different rules and tactics may think that they are similar games but this is only superficial and although most Rugby players may be able to play either code to a reasonable level there are relatively few who do make highly successful transitions between the different codes. And if one is highly successful in any one code there would usually be less financial incentives to switch codes mid-career as that player would usually be already highly rewarded finance-wise.

Remember the game goes for 80 min, and it’s action packed. They’ve done tests and found that running the ball back into those solid blokes is like being hit by a car at 25miles an hour

I’m old school living in a modern advertising world. Black screen to the sound of Shaft. Gold shining NRl logo fade in and out a few times. Esra Mann GF run Fade in fade out x3 then fade in - him checking out the camera. Then the heavy hits fade in fade out one after another while the heavy hits continue music jumping then finally like the ad Penrith No 7 scores the Gf winning try. Ad ends - everyone is high.

Um Russell Crowe was/is The Gladiator....Robyn Hood...and so many other *****star movies. anyways he bought our South Sydney football team and has been a great supporter of Rugby League for years. Highly respected actor and also had a band in the early days. He's a national treasure...

Another rule that differs between NFL and NRL is that there is no Fair Catch. That includes kick offs and kicks down field to gain territory. So that means you can put a kick up high (a bomb) and line the receiving fullback up and smash him in a tackle. As long as you get the timing right when the fullback catches the ball. I’m pretty sure there’s also a U.S.A. vs Canada in Rugby Union the day before as well.
