...I'm an old guy (and a vet), currently 68, I've practiced Isshinryu, Gojuryu (in Japan), Uechiryu, Kajukembo, Judo, Kendo, Kali/Escrima, Taichi, and a smattering of other stuff...and have lived most of my life in Asia. The BEST strategy for self defense is staying out of bars and clubs...and controlling your alcohol consumption...lol. Doing a Tier List is so difficult I think. What one needs to ask is "what am I training for?" I think while you're young you ought really to consider what kind of physical damage you incure in your training and how that will play out as you age.

100% about the instructor being more important than the style. That said you should be able to fight at all ranges, if not you have a glaring weakness. So if it’s Bjj and Muay Thai, Sanda and Catch, Kyokushin and Judo, Dutch and Sambo, what would matter most would be the coach.

I did a few years of jin jung kwan hapkido. It was actually pretty good for self-defense imo. Our style incorporated american boxing/kickboxing, folkstyle wrestling, and a lot of judo-based throws and newazi ground work. We sparred quite a bit, and usually sparring was more or less mma in dobak. that said, I've been to other hapkido schools that were kind of a joke (green and blue belts doing weird revivalist sword stuff, etc) It's seems that hapkido schools can be really good or really bad, no real in between. A good hapkido guy from my old school actually smoked a pretty good guy in kyokushin (and a shotokon guy too) at an open karate tournament. But again, like you guys said, a lot of this stuff really boils down to the practitioner and coach rather than the style itself.

Thanks for this. Easily the most accurate of these lists I've seen. I did wing chun for six years, but I agree with both of you. Another variable I'd add is how much damage someone is willing to take during training. With my day job, I can't afford to take too much. Based on what's available locally, over forty years of martial arts experience, and some experience of having to keep myself safe in that time, Shotokan's the best fit.

For the most part yes however there is that fine line from self defense to excessive force. From my own personal experience its a bit of a tight rope walk for example at my work Ive had to deal with thieves a lot which I shouldnt but I dont like to stand idle and watch it happen and so I usually confront these people twice my size because I have martail arts experience but the problem is unless they attack im the aggressor and unlike a street fight or mma I cant just knock someone out which would make mey life easier. I take one of these guys down and bystanders are on their side with the im being excessiv bullshit not realizing if i didnt show aggression if i wasnt actively attacking then im at my own risk of injury. I put more care into their well being not to hurt them too much whereas they wouldnt show me that in return. I hate having to hold back.

I currently actively training in both Lethwei and Kyokushin. In my training experiences, sparring in Kyokushin is always more brutal than in Lethwei but training in Lethwei always makes me question my capabilities. In my Kyokushin sessions, we are only focused of fight for KO the opponent in a short window of time which is usually 1 to 2 min. Even light sparring look too much for beginners & inflicts weeks-long injuries often. Of course, you are getting battle harden after that. So some of my friends and I always deliberately get the big shots for just conditioning purposes without defense them. That might look Kyoukushin so vulnerable but not really. Sometimes I fight with 270 pounder who are really strong and flexible even though I way below his weight class. Kyokushin is all about testing your endurance and might. When you're in Kyokushin you get better at taking really strong body shot/kicks as well as strong liver and much more instinctive and responsive to both kicks and punches. Just like some people though, Lethwei looks no technique and is messy right? Yes as a Kyokushin karateka, I can out-technique my fellow Lethwei fighters as long as it is nice and light spar. But that messy part really changes the whole game when you seriously fight with these people. Just while I setting up the techniques to KO the opponent, multiple combos of knee jab cross and head kick are already on me. People who are training in Kyokushin will know how Kyoukushin fighters are used to being good at covering their head which is the most easy KO part. But when I fight with Lethwei fighter I can't see what's coming to me and I look dumb af. If you didn't know in Lethwei besides Head butt you can take down, throw, punch to the back of the head and choke (not on the ground) as well. And it is very street friendly as well. If Kyokushin teaches you skill and endurance, Lethwei will teach you how to deal with fear in a real fight. Lethwei fights are more fearsome and traumatic usually. If you believe you are tough guy I suggest the Lethwei to test your actual courage. Because the true fear is only came out when you know you have no protection by gloves or rules but your opponents can do whatever he want to make you sleep in pure aggression. So as an anti gloves bare knucle guy, my bias is Lethwei & Kyokushin are the S ranking martial arts to be preparing yourself for serious self defense.

@Pastamist 5 ай бұрын
@@junichiroyamashitaIt resembles a mixture of the clinchwork/sweeps of Muay Thai and Greco-Roman wrestling- in particular, there’s a lot of head grabs to make use of and prevent headbutts, such as hand placements to the jaw and hair pulling to open said-jaw, but there isn’t much of an emphasis on grappling compared to strikes, and actual submission holds are almost non-existent.

Your knowledge on martial arts is insane. Agreed with Kyokushin but disagree with Dutch tiers - I learned dutch kickboxing after kyokushin and competed in k1 rules as an amateur. My style is too heavily reliant on dutch guard aka shells, it wouldnt work very well in bare knuckles situation...You bring up Ernesto Hoost and Peter Aerts but those were top heavyweights. Also I disagree with the boxing skills that Dutch Kickboxing teach, I think it's quite different than pure boxing (see Andy Souwer). Imo, both DKB and Muay Thai should be B tier and Boxing should be A tier. The video was awesome dont get me wrong but it quickly became a review of those styles in a ring/octagon setting. Last note: Ernesto Hoost got ktfo'd by Bob Sapp, a juiced monster who barely knew how to fight, because Dutch guys lacked the essential head movements that a boxer possess. Mike Tyson would absolutely destroy Sapp even under K1 ruleset.

I see your point in some respects, but I disagree with the Bob Sapp/Ernesto Hoost example. Sapp lost most of his kickboxing fights, so I don't really see it as an issue of kickboxing as a style I guess. I'm not sure if it was ego, or maybe just Hoost's individual style, but Hoost seemed to have the wrong gameplan against Sapp. Or underestimated Sapp's power. Sapp was a genetic freak too (+juice lol).
@dababy4182
@dababy4182 Жыл бұрын
@@notabot2351 That's true, Hoost was ego driven in both fights. But defending Sapp's punches using dutch guard really did him a disservice. Even Peter Aerts displayed some poor head movements imo. Ofc, different rulesets call for different fighting styles, I just think sticking to punches, slips, bobs and weaves work so much better on streets. Most of the time we arent even wearing pants that allow us to kick effectively...

wussy-arsed US schools are why TKD has a bad rep. I trained in classes of 2-4 people with a 5th Dan black belt instructor in Korea, in 1973 and the man could literally hand you an axe, take it from you and shove it ykw, all in 2-3 seconds. I saw him kill an 80 lb pick with a single spear hand strike behind its foreleg. Two guys held it outstretched on its side on the ground. Moon went to one knee, struck once, and that thing squealed, flopped a bit and died. He had stopped its heart! I saw him training for that demo. He would do single-finger pushups until you got TIRED of watching him do them. He'd brought a 2x2x2 ft wooden box into the floored wall tent that we used for a training hall. While he watched us do one step sparring and kata, he'd drive his spear hand down into that box of gravel, halfway to his elbow. You'd be much more likely to survive messing with Rambo and his belt fed than with Moon, I kid you not. I dont promote anyone to black belt until they are un-touchable by the untrained man. By the time I promote you to red belt, the untrained man cannot beat you in a squared off fight, both men on their feet, no weapons, aware of what's happening, decent floor surface.

if you're not a trained kicker, taught what to do vs stop kicks and low front snapkicks, you have ZERO chance vs such a kicker. You'll never lay a hand on him and he'll destroy your leg in 2 seconds for sure and probably do so in the first 1/2 second.. Youll try to step in, he'll rip your patella off of the front of your leg or drive your bladder back into your spine and that will be that.

Ted Wong looks like a Bruce Lee imitation. Yes I know Ted Wong was a student of Bruce Lee. Vids od Ted Wong looks like if you asked an AI on how Bruce Lee fought. Vids of Ted Wong look like constant pendulum step insid kick and straight punch. A lot of his students reflect this too. You also have to understand that Ted Wong trained with Bruce during short yet specific period of time. Researching into how Bruce Lee actually fought is like archeology where you get a lot of information and misinformation while having pieces missing. So you start getting more questions than answers. Watch Bruce Lee vs Dan Inosanto, whenever Dan comes in for an attack Bruce just clashes into him using a punch or kick or trip. Tao of Jeet Kune Do are notes on Straight Left by Jim Driscol (Champion Boxer during 1920's), Championship Boxing by Jack Dempsey and On Fencing by Adi. There's a picture of Bruce Lee wearing a Judo Gi at a Judo class. Interviews with Dan Inosanto constantly mentions that Bruce took from Boxing, Savate, Fencing and various styles of Southern and Northern Kung Fu, I think Ted Wong only teaches a fraction of JKD.

Very impressed by the nuanced analysis of the host. He got most things right except... Dutch Kickboxing. I love that sport as well but they are terrible against grappling. Lebanner and Errol Zimmerman both had disaster first time mma experiences.. they threw an easily grabbed kick, get taken down and subbed instantly. So the big hole in the style is the lack of snap in the kicks, which is intentional for the sport.

I wan to only a emphasize problem with kicking on the street! The reason why is that you can slip and fight is for you over with more than one attacker! The kick in tight and slipper conditions is suicide! That why boxer does very good with multiple attackers plus boxer can stop opponents with one good punch and is usually very difficult stop by punch usually very good chin. When it comes to wrestling or jui jitsu is that martial art is designed for one attacker. Then mud rain...nife can make difference. That is very interesting but I think in normal case every martial art style is better for certain styles. Like stand up fighter has a problem with ground martial art if they don't have good take down defence.?! Plus you must be lucky to hit him flat if no game over! Is so difficult 😅 16:12 16:12

I think that Lethwei is more of a rule set than an actual style. From what I’ve learned, there isn’t much of a formal technique for any strike they have. Every coach teaches it differently. I think Dutch kickboxing and Muay Thai are complimentary styles to each other. Dutch guys have great hands, but have no clinch. Having no clinch in a fight is like going into mma without knowing bjj. Boxing should be in the A tier in my opinion. It doesn’t have as many weapons as the rest, but they have the most polished weapons. I’ve competed in K1, boxing, mma, bjj, Muay Thai, kyokushin and enshin, and I’ve trained in more styles.

I would have liked to have seen Savate and JKD on this list. Both A tier IMO. JKD could be S tier but most people don’t train it properly, so it falls to A.

Loving these vids . I don’t know if this holds true today but in my era apart from a few the hardest , most dangerous men in the country were mostly boxers with backgrounds in some sort of grappling . They didn’t kick they booted or stomped and with no cctv were hired to stomp trouble makers and fight each other in unlicensed matches .

Muay Thai should be much lower as those guys fight at long distance. In a real fight, the gap will close so fast the Muay Thai guy will lose all his main weapon and elbows won't save him.

We have to look at how the diciplines are practiced and trained as well. How good are the guys you’re training with? How good is the training and coach? How good is the competition when you’re competing? How often is it possible to practice the art the way it’s supposed to be used in an actual fight? Many factors. Some arts can be better in theory, but worse in practice just because what’s actually happening in training just simply isn’t good enough.

Agreed the best place to train is where you have the best coach but this is a generalization

I've been practicing Silat and Escrima since 1993 and Taiji, Bagua and Xingyi since 2008. I like practicing slow twisting and circling steps with blades. It nourishes my brain and I circulate my chi to stay healthy and massage my internal organs to stay soft and limber. The first thing I would teach someone is how to relax and root and circulate Qi. After relaxing,, someone can learn basic Gong Fu!

Seen up to 10:04 so far. Stopped to make my list for self defense and it would be: S - Lethwei, SAMBO A -Muay Thai B -Dutch kick boxing, Sanda C - Kudo/Enshin, Kyokushin, Boxing D - Shotokan, Goju ryu, TKD E -Panantukan, Silat, Wing Chun F - Kenpo, Hapkido *It's hard to place the systems I chose in D,E,F, because all instructors do not train them the same. If I judged those in regards to each' arsenal at face value(not training methodology), I would have it as so: D -Panantukan, Silat, Kenpo E -Shotokan, Goju ryu F -Hapkido, TKD -Still not satisfied. *There are many variables to consider (training method, arsenal, competition, how many years do they need to become sufficient, and against what type of fighters), so disagreement with that of others, is expected.

I don't know if you know my friend, but muay thai is very good, but it is a sport, research the old muay thai, called muay boran, there is the current and updated version that is taught in the Thai army, it is a hybrid combat with strikes and grappling and it's very real and very aggressive. It also has headbutts.

I think this is more likely accurate. S - Lethwei/Combat Sambo/Kudo/DKB A - Muay Thai/ Sanda B - Boxing/Enshin/Ashi C - Kyokushin/Hapkido D - Shotokan/Panantukan E - TKD/Kempo/Goju F - Silat/Wing Chun There's a reason why you put an F tier over there.

Dutch kickboxing is incredibly overrated. It's a good style but the idea they have amazing boxing is a myth, they are good aggression based combo punchers in the context of kickboxing but they aren't really amazing boxers they are very one dimensional in the hand department with a very mediocre jab, minimal sniping, rudimentary head movement which isn't the best I've seen within the context of kickfighting. Whilst I don't think this is necessarily down fully to the inherent superiority of one style by itself over another they tend to get wrecked by Thais, Dekkers lost more than he won in thailand and the level in kb is considerably lower than Muay Thai, to the point thais have won heavyweight k1 grand prix despite being past their prime and welterweights going up several weight classes. Dutch kb also doesn't have the best world of everything it takes from (or something close to it). It lacks the kicking prowess of Muay Thai or Kyokushin (having deemphasised, simplified and/or removed a lot of the amazing snappy kyokushin kicks besides the odd exception) and they are only really good at low round kicks and the odd head kick. Modern japanese kickboxing is a hybrid made up of the same stuff as Dutch kb and whilst sharing some of its issues is generally much more well rounded and keeps a lot more of that karate kicking as well as staying true more to MT in its Thai kicking content. Dutch kb is a good streamlined system for those that like to stand and bang a little and want to get very good at dealing with pressure and being smacked in the head quickly. Whilst officially it has a decently wide curriculum in theory, in practice it's only good in a few areas. If it's trained like it often is in Holland its also horrendous for brain health and normal people wanting to defend themselves who are also interested in self preservation as a broader form of self defence.
