We love it! Looks so good with the black leather dashboard too. We'd love to be able to compare this car with a G12 760Li to see what's different material wise.

PRN That's be interesting! By the way, now that you mention the G11 M760i, I've been wanting to ask you, do you think that BMW made the right move making it an M-performance model? I feel like the V12 7 series that came before were luxury foremost. How do you feel about them "sporty-ing" their biggest Limo?
@PRNTestDrive7 жыл бұрын
I still don't know what to think about it to be honest. Everyone's been asking for an M7 or equivalent for decades now. Mercedes starting offering AMG versions of the S-Class and BMW didn't. It's weird, but an AMG S-Class makes sense, but an M 7 Series, even an M760Li as sort of a baby M doesn't feel right. We'd have to drive it to see if there's a reason for it, but then again the X5M/X6M is very popular out here and taking an SUV on a track doesn't make a lot of sense either.
@Divine_Serpent_Geh7 жыл бұрын
PRN Good. Because I feel the same way. There's no need for an M7 or even an M-performance model. AMG S-class has never sense to me either. Equally Audi. Although they have never made an RS8, they build an S8, which is supposed to offer more sport. To me I just don't see the point in buying a limousine of these proportions and be "sporty". It's all very confusing in my opinion. Having the sportier suspension, loud exhaust etc... In a car that is merely meant to be as comfortable and luxurious as it can be, it's paradoxical to me. Glad you feel the same way. I hope there is never an M7 or RS8. It's too late for Mercedes LOL. The X5M/X6M... I have no comment to how ridiculous those are.
@PRNTestDrive7 жыл бұрын
Haha! The Old school S8s were really awesome though, we're trying to track one down and do a Spotlight on it. The 7 Series is a great luxury car, if I want sport and a large cabin I'd get the M6 GC or E63 AMG Wagon. 7 Series will always be about cruising and comfort for me.

As someone who has extensive experience with both cars, I have a couple of things to note... The V12 uses a ZF 5HP30 transmission, which the V8 also used from 1995 until halfway through 1998. From the halfway point in 1998, the V8 uses the ZF 5HP24 transmission. The difference is basically a reduction in maximum gearbox torque. The valve bodies and shifting behaviors should be basically identical. As far as the behavior, if you were to reset the transmission's short term adaptives, which are basically adjustments made based on its observation of your driving, they should behave in exactly the same way. The only differentiator will arise due to the greater torque from the V12 engine causing more driveline torque to be available at lower RPM. This transmission controller uses torque demand as one of the primary inputs to determine when to shift. A full kickdown (past the detent at full throttle) should cause exactly the same behavior in both cars. My experience with the 750iL was that its transmission is very responsive to a forced kickdown, even if the trans had learned a very mild driving style over the last few hundred miles. The 4.4's initial throttle tip-in downshift response is a little more aggressive, in part due to the reduced torque from the engine. A good few tests to determine if it could be mechanical wear are as follows: - Shifts in steptronic mode should be very quick, taking at most a bit less than a second from +/- lever input to gear change. - Read the line pressure with a scan tool and compare with specification (don't remember off the top of my head). - Read the long term adaptives like per clutch/band pressure precompensation. Remember that the 5.4 is coupled with a 2.81:1 final drive ratio. The 4.4 is available with either a 2.93 (I think?) standard or a "Sport" ratio of 3.15 as an extra cost option, standard on 740i Sport. This can cause substantial difference in feeling at low speeds, though it is a big contributor to the "doesn't let up" feeling of the 5.4's highway power. Over about 100 MPH, there is absolutely no comparison between the cars. The 750 is MUCH faster. On the other hand, I'd be surprised if 0-30 isn't exactly the same.

There is another difference between the 5HP30 & 5HP24 which I learned when I took my 540 E34 (5HP30) and my 840 (5HP24) to ZF for a service. The 540 had over 200k KM at that time and the 840 had around 80k KM and yet the oil and control balls in the 5HP30 were perfectly fine (it never had service according to the date on the oil filter). The 5HP24 on the other hand had dirty oil and the balls had also measurable wear. As the 5HP24 has a maximum torque rating similar to the max torque of the M62B44, it needs to work "harder" which results in more wear. The 5HP30 which is I think rated with a maximum torque of 500 NM has so much reserve, that it mostly does its job with little effort. For me, it was quite a revelation to see both of them disassembled side by side and see how different the wear on them was.

As a 8-series V12 owner, the debate surrounding the V12 vs the "4-short" has been going on for years. After 11 years with the 8-series, numerous meets all over Europe this is what I have learned. 1. The V12 will outperform the V8 from 200kph and onwards, up to that speed they are virtually identical. Meaning it has no real difference, unless you live in Germany. 2. The V8 sounds better with an aftermarket exhaust than the V12. 3. V8 has better fuel economy. So if you are looking for a cool cruiser that you want to mod to attract some attention, the V8 is the one to go for. If you want the more low key route, with a tad more power and "bragging rights", go for the V12.
@PRNTestDrive7 жыл бұрын
Well said! The 8 Series is the one car we hoped to review, and the owner of this V12 had a few of them however we ran out of time before moving.
@justhemus997 жыл бұрын
the v12 in this review has 30 more horse power and tiptronic gear box compared with your model(850I) unless you have an 850csi 6 speed?.750 will pull ahead of 740 and stay there all the way to 155mph(you can tell by the look on his face when he was testing it that it pulls quicker than his 740).I used to import them here in New Zealand from Japan about ten years ago when they were still viable.out of 30 odd e38's i have tried 728(6 cylinder used as taxis in Singapore) 730(v8 but this model is terribly under powered), 735, 740(4.0l) 740(4.4l) the 750 is the one to invest in.you will never be 100% happy in the v8 now you have experienced the v12 maybe 90% happy but not 100.
@850bimmer7 жыл бұрын
My car is not comparable with any of these as it has about 500hp, but that is a different story. An 840, and an 850 (5.0 300hp) "raced" on the German Autobahn. And around 200kph the 850 started to pull away. There was only made 1250 850's with the 5.4 M73 engine, so a very rare car, actually fewer that the 5.6l CSi of which 1518 was made. If I was going to buy another 8-series there is a good chance I would go for the V8, put a nice exhaust on it and enjoy it. I can't legally drive any of them to its full potential in my country, and with the performance difference being that small it makes no difference if I get the V8 or V12.
@xxgm287 жыл бұрын
850bimmer I've got a E38 750i with a full exhaust system on it and there's no V8 BMW that sounds better! You could close your eyes and this thing sounds like a super car coming towards you! A far superior sound than the more common V8. But it's all preference! (Yes, I'm a young V12 driver) 21.
@850bimmer7 жыл бұрын
Well, I guess that is personal preference. I have had 5 different exhausts on my V12 now, and while it sound good, I still dont think it can compete with a V8 with a good system. That said a screaming Lamborghini V12 is the best sound in the world, but you can never get a BMW v12 to sound like that.

Well, I have a BMW 5.4 V12 (E38). US Specifications. It was a Demonstration Car with the BMW Dealer. I have slightly lower profile tyres at the front for cornering and taking curves at high speed on German Autobahn. The maximum speed I have driven constantly is 240 km / 150 mph...I have S Button. When it is depressed, it is a monster of a car to handle. I have never tested against a 4.4 V8 ...When the engine is warmed up, overtaking / passing at high speed is the greatest pleasure. The Factory Fitted Double Glazed windows are a boon at high speed ... The beauty of it is that it is so unassuming ... Of all the cars that I have driven, this one is the very special ...I am 82. I have this car since 2003. I drive from London to Stockholm in 23 hours and to Istanbul in 36 hours. These are becoming rarer and rarer, especially with low mileage. Mine is only 86,790 miles ...139,645 km...If you have a BMW 540 V12 (E 38), spend some money she deserves and keep it. It is a great great car to drive and to keep.

My '97 (pre facelift) Orient Blue E38 740I (4.4l) is like a rebellious teenage daughter, always throwing a fit, and sulking to spite me... I wouldn't trade her for the world though. I've put 2 new alternators, 2 water pumps, various sensors, 18" E39 style 65 rims, rebuilt lots of hoses, belt changes, 2 fan clutch changes, speaker repairs, valve cover gaskets, all intake gaskets, control arms/bushings (including: Powerflex front Traction strut bushings), rebuilt power steering hoses, repaired seat cables, recovered headliner, 4 brake rotors and 8 pads all round, the list goes on... Also bought/made lots of supporting tools for the various jobs, got a laptop with INPA, made my own ADS Interface. Bottom line, if you want one of these cars, they're a proper handful, be prepared for that, also you need to be a competent mechanic, or be best buddies with one, just to keep up with them, otherwise they will bankrupt you. i got a 1999 540i , the 4.4 liter is faster and more power than the old 5.0 v12. The 4.4 was rated at 286hp but that was too low it was over the 300hp easily ( a lot of dyno proof for that ). BMW underrated those engines not to drop sales on the v12

My sisters boyfriend had a 750il before, i tested it. And i gotta say it was a experience everyone should try, true you can't almost hear the engine but it is a sick experience. A bit later a friend of him totalled the car by just toying with it.. it was a beauty, it had this dark red paint and all the equippment this one had.. its a shame

That's too bad that the car got wrecked, but it sounds like it was a great E38! The red ones are pretty hard to come by, most buyers were conservative and went with black or grey unfortunately.

What I like most of my '95 e38-iL, aside from the subtle, but beastly, exterior aesthetics and opulent interior, is the sport mode. It is a wholly different driving experience. In my area, the 750iL E38 is far and few in-between. But, the few that I have found for sale appear to be fairly cheaply priced. Excellent video, however to my knowledge your statement about the transmissions being the same is incorrect. The 740il has ZF 5HP24 transmission and the 750il has the larger and much heavier ZF 5HP30 transmission that i believe was in the pre 98 740's. This could possibly explain the difference in power delivery. I own a 99 740il and despite 265k miles the transmission still shifts amazing. Hands down the best car I have ever driven. I hope you keep your 740 as well. I got mine for 800 5 years ago and have put about 4k of parts into it to make it perfect. Original engine still gets me 26mpg highway and about 22mpg average. Cant wait to see what it does with new rings and a valve job! Someday... Id like to see how many miles i can get on this engine.

Euro/US spec engines should be the same with the 750iL, the only real difference is the short wheelbase offering of the V12 in Europe, whereas 99.999% of the cars sold in North America were iLs.
@padlasvillage7 жыл бұрын
Oh, I didnt know that there was a short version of 750, I thought they all were iL.. Well if we look at it now, MB 500 and MB 500SEL makes sense. Well, the one i am after has only 180K km on clock, owner has it for 15 or 16 years, used only for long trips, never seen norwegian snowy roads, maintained the car, upgrades installed, all services, and by researching, I came to conclusion BMW V12 is more reliable then V8.

@PRNTestDrive7 жыл бұрын
Haha, thanks! You might be able to find the short V12 over there, I know they made quite a few for the European market. 180k isn't bad at all, and the V12s are considered to be more reliable than their V8 brothers, although maintenance will be around the same when you factor in the added components for the V12. Get it checked by a mechanic, and if it looks good buy it! You won't regret it.

here is the add. google translate, was lazy to write down Entry car is offered for sale due to space shortage. The car was put on sale 5 years ago but I was sold two other cars and this one could be. But now I need the place. This is no show version but certainly the top-of-the-line BMW 750 with most of the equipment that can be delivered to the model. The car has gone without fail since it was new and is absolutely flawless and stainless. The car has been taken from the United States as a freight item in 2003 by owner who has had the car since December 2000. It has been upgraded to Blue Integrated Phone (BMW ULF 13th Generation), upgraded 3-D Navigation (Mark IV) with 16: 9 monitor, new Euro radio with TCM (everything from X5 that was produced for 2006), Back camera in color, iPod interface, etc. Harman Kardon music system. All BMW part numbers. BMW made a major upgrade of the 750 Series 9/98 with, among other things, New engine management system and xenon light. The upgrades were so large that there is a significant difference between models built before and after 9/98. 160,000 km service with change of plugs (12) and Lamda sensors (4) as well as all filters are done. Brake pads and washers replaced 2016. Rubber bearings for suction, water pump and radiator renewed. Towing fastening with detachable hook newly fitted. The car can be delivered free (free) within Norway. The car is mostly used for long trips and has gone very little on Norwegian winter roads. Km stand can be documented with receipts from service and EU controls. The rear shock absorbers are renewed and the car has summer and winter tires from 2015.

Can’t help you much on the tune, I know Dinan made some parts for this engine and there are probably ECU and TCU tunes to help boost response time. The interior shouldn’t be overly complicated to switch out, it’s just finding the colour you want that might take some time.

@PRNTestDrive7 жыл бұрын
As is the case with any enthusiast following like the W140s or E38s, there will be a lot of back and forth between the BMW and Mercedes camps. I've spoken to many Mercedes techs and enthusiasts, and they all recommend avoiding the 90s and early 2000s V12s, they just aren't reliable compared with the V8s and smaller engines from Mercedes at the time. When it comes to the BMW the V12 is just two straight 6 motors stuck together, so they're relatively simple to maintain, although you're looking at service costs for what is essentially two engines. So while the V12 is less likely to grenade on you, maintenance will often be similar if not a bit more than the V8.
@Forge177 жыл бұрын
+PRN interesting, didn't know that! Thanks for the info

If you replace v12 diff with v8 diff the car with dsc turned off will spin one wheel off the mark all the way to about 70 miles an hour, really brings the car alive.also using wheels from 745 although are slightly wrong off set( rubs inner gauard slightly on full lock) will give the same look filling the guards with out trashing the ride.its a shame to see you getting jolted like that on the bumps in the road.have the standard v12 shocks rebuilt by a hydraulic shop(where they rebuild hydraulic rams).changing spring height is madness as it changes suspension geometry, you are robbing your self of an impressive driving experience.

Nice review. Really enjoy your vids. Informative and dignified. Don't forget the V12 has THE coolest starter sound of all engines. I agree the leather dash, and other accents and exclusivity are special. However the V-12 MPG falls compared to the V-8. Reliability/cost/typical issues are really about the same in the big picture.... though so many are terrified of V-12s. There are VERY few nice V12 E38s and E32s around anymore. Nice non-tricked-out or trashed 740i/iLs are hard to find too - but the selection will be far more than what's around for the 750s. It appears like the leather is more supple in the 750.

One thing you didn't mention: reliability. Is the V12 really such a pain? I know People who stopped selling 850s because of problems with the engines.
@PRNTestDrive7 жыл бұрын
Improper maintenance is the biggest issue, and overall cost of said maintenance. We didn't go in depth with problems as we put together an E38 Buyers Guide video a few months ago which covered all the problems and what to look out for when it comes to any of the North American 7 Series models. Most feel the V12 is more reliable as it's single overhead cam and lack of vanos make them less prone to exploding, and the timing chain guide issue with the V8s don't affect the V12. As mentioned in the video though, the extra spark plugs, mass airflow sensors, and other engine components end up costing more, which means regular maintenance costs are higher, which scare most people away.
