Steven Strain I think all manufacturers have sealed transmission now which imo is stupid. I’m a Toyota dealer mechanic and all their vehicles except for the Yaris has sealed transmissions. I have a BMW 335i as a summer car and that too has a sealed unit but I change the fluid every 70k.
@matte84414 жыл бұрын
Steven Strain True. Toyota’s newer vehicles are not as well made as the previous ones and I think that goes to all car manufacturers. I think they want people’s cars to break down after the warranty period so they could trade it in for a new model while it’s in their shop. And I do see that often.

5:09 I can in fact say that steering wheel is the E39 5 series M sport steering wheel. However the 7 did get a 3 spoke steering wheel, it just looked a bit different. Also I’m in agreement with most of the comment section that I prefer the E38 over the new generation. I own one currently and it has over 242k miles on it. My dad’s E38 has 320k miles on it. BMWs of this era could never hit that kind of mileage without needing serious engine or transmission work. I’ve even driven the new 7 and even though it has more power, it just doesn’t compare to the old one. The E38 is just way more planted to the ground and you feel like you’re getting an actual driving experience when the new 7 just feels way too floaty. EDIT: Hold on, they said the E38 went 0-60 in 6.8? Almost everywhere I’ve looked I’ve seen 5.9 for the 740i. I don’t think they were correct on that regard.

Though my Mazda 3 is much newer and has more technology, for a drive the bmw was a better ride and 30 years older. Yea the factory e38 sport wheel had a larger airbag.
@mike325ci4 жыл бұрын
Yep, the sport package wheel would have a double parallel spoke on the bottom. That one is off an E39 M5 or E46 M3. [I have installed a paddle-shift wheel off an E46 M3 SMG to my E53 X5 4.6is - looks just like the one in this E38, but with paddle shifts]

I've owned BMWs since 1995 and this was my 3rd one. It drove like a large 3 series. I had the '01 Sport short wheel base - the sporty shorty. I was a fool for getting rid of it, but the reality is that you need to plan on $1500 in repairs above and beyond the maintenance costs. So it's a car that costs $2500/year to keep on the road. This was peak BMW. It's been a sh** show with them ever since.

I have a W211 E Class (one of the best in terms of build quality below the W123 and W124) and now if I jump in some of the new Mercedes cars, they are pretty underwhelming, especially the C Class, it disappointed me so much!

@bassandtrebleclef For you to have that history with bmw, state those running costs, & say that era was peak bmw (which I agree with), says alot. Sad indeed. Logic & commonsense prevent me from getting into the bmw game this late. Still want to, but seems that ship has sailed. The good ones are so old now, finding one that isn't 100% trashed seems highly unlikely.

The crayon smell comes from the adhesive they use to put all the interior pieces together, BMW, Merc, Volkswagen and Audi all used it so that’s why they all smell like that when they’re older.
@michu67774 жыл бұрын
It's so weird that some E38s completely avoid developing the crayon smell. My personal 1998 740iL has the crayon smell but my 1997 750iL does not have it. Neither does my dad's 2001 740i, or my previous 2001 740iL. My first E38 was also a 1998 and it had the crayon smell too.
@1Reddd4 жыл бұрын
mitchgo _ A lot of it has to do with how it was stored. If it was garage kept most of its life it’s less likely to develop the crayon smell. But if it sits outside the heat is what causes the adhesive to make that smell after a while.

Great design, simple interior, without all those stupid tablets and screens, yet luxurious enough for me and last, but not least, sporty handling, which defines the BMW brand. I could say about the E38 that it is the ultimate driving machine...

The difference gap is even more bigger given the fact there are so many development costs in engineering throughout the years :) So the difference is even even bigger. However, I am a e46/39/38 lover and I own 39 Individual. I am a huge fan of these cars in 199x - 200x. At that evera they made a huge mistake with dieselengines - they put a General Motors automatic transmission in it and this GM showed its underengineered flaws over the time. On the other hand ZF 5HP was quite a piece :) Unfortunatelly mine is 530Da - but it runs pretty nicely so far. Angled mid panel towards the drives was really practical. After the time when Bengl kicked in they left this option for a while. I do like the hight quality pastic materials which even after 20 yrs are still really firm and dont do any annoying sounds. Sporty and contour seats surrounded your body really well and the leather is still very nice to these days. I appretiate their DSP sound system. It is not something which takes your trousers off while the bass is kicking but the sound colour and sound quality is still very nice and soothing to listen to. I have one in my Touring and I enjoy every CD which I play there. I am not a fan of bass tubes, I like it original and I am pretty content with it. There is an option to mount ZF 8HP into such old cars BUT the cost is pretty high and you also need a special unit which was only in e6/e9 models. We have one skilled mechanic in our community whose project is e39 + ZF 8HP. The everyday ride in my e39 is so enjoyable and maybe I will get another one in time - the V8 :)

@@firstnamesecondname5341 Have you ever heard of hydrogen powered cars? Even BMW had an e38 fitted with a hydrogen powered engine 20 years ago, which was basically a standard combustion engine fitted with hydrogen injection. You can have a look at it just by typing "BMW e38 Hydrogen" on youtube. This is even better for the environment, recycle the technology we already have, not having to mine foreign countries for rare minerals to produce batteries and all the problems this entails, not having to produce more energy to charge more batteries, even renewable energies have a big impact on the natural ecosystem. Electric cars are just as bad for the environment as petrol cars.
@firstnamesecondname53414 жыл бұрын
Abraham Estevez of course I have, as has anyone whom watched James May report on the hydrogen Honda.... just try and see if you can get an insurance company to underwrite a policy for it without it costing you the same as the price of the car. Most technologically failures come not because they’re a bad idea but simply it’s too complicated for mass adoption, electric cars can be charged at home as well as charge points, which themselves can be put in near enough anywhere where power lines exist. yet hydrogen need a heck of a lot of infrastructure changes and quite strong infrastructure at that, no one wants the consequence of an accident at a hydrogen refuelling station.

Because it's engineered to do just that.
