I really don't understand all the hate towards the 1-5 unit armies. I always loved it. It forced you to split your forces to prevent from being raided. it wasn't as simple as sending your one army at theirs. You had to account for the little guys who would raze your territory if you sent your entire army their way.
@PoorManatee6197
@PoorManatee6197 2 жыл бұрын
Agree, it also adds a lot of possible tactics like instead of stoping your whole army you just pul back the damaged units and bring reinforcements, surrounding a enemy so he cant scape, using 1 unit as scouts, sending your faster units on their own to contain the enemy while the other units move to the front... Also smaller battles where every soldier is important can be very fun.

One of my favorite tactics to use with this mechanic in Medieval 2 is when I'm facing a larger army that I can't handle in a straight up fight, so I send in a bunch of Horse archers to soften them up and to kill key targets (such as artillery) before the main battle. Their speed makes it easy to avoid too much damage, so I have time to spend all of their ammo before withdrawing, killing hundreds of troops for every ten of mine. I just wish the game didn't think that I lost those types of battles.

It's so much more accurate to history, as well. Small war dominated campaigns, with maybe one or two pitched battles as a climactic turning point after all the manouvering and tactics. IMO general-locked full stacks marching around is Rome 2's biggest flaw. Empire, with the individual buildings spread out on the campaign map, probably had the most promise for this play-style, but also caused most of the frustration in the community. I personally loved it. Provinces were not secure until you could literally secure them.
@jackabsolute5525
@jackabsolute5525 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I really liked it too. There was a certain tactical element wherein you could detach all your cavalry to either chase a retreating stack, or besiege a settlement with an inferior army while the main body lies in ambush. In Napoleon, I would detach whole regiment of cavalry and horse artillery lead by a cavalry general while the main soldiers and artillery slowly make their way to support the siege next turn. But, I think the Ottoman empire bug ruined it all. One hundred stacks of 1 unit armies locked the campaign to a grinding halt.

I’m OG. I definitely prefer Remastered Rome. There are elements of Rome 2 that I like, but I think original Rome is superior in ways that Rome 2 can’t match with its engine limitations. For example, character building. I park my youngsters in my most important city a few turns and then play them according to their traits. I get attached to my characters. I don’t get attached to my Rome 2 characters at all. Also, with Feral lifting so many limits on Remastered, I think that the things I enjoy about Rome 2, mainly the grand scope of the campaign, can be realized in Remastered.

Rome total war is such an amazing game, a timeless masterpiece. I had one of my most epic battles in it which I will retell now. So I was in Africa, fighting the Egyptians. My leader, Kaeso, was a gifted youngster who had only recently inherited the Julii estate from his father. Rome was powerful but so was the Pharaoh. We had fought a fierce battle against one of the Pharaoh's armies, and I retreated the main part of my forces to recover in a nearby city that we had just taken. Behind I left a few catapults, which slowed down the army and impeded them from getting to the cities. There were no enemy armies nearby and I felt it was safe to do so. Guarding them, I only left a few auxiliary cavalry, and some praetorian guards protecting Kaeso. Of course, as often is the case in war, the unexpected happened. As the turn ended, from just beyond my line of sight, a massive army emerged from the Egyptian lands. It was the Pharaoh himself, leading a full stack of war chariots and infantry! They set upon Kaeso, intent on killing my leader without mercy. Greatly outnumbered, Kaeso nonetheless gave a rousing speech and inspired his men. They braced for impact and prepared for the worst. Pharaoh's army slowly marched over the sandy dunes in the distance, their gold armor glistening in the sun. Indomitable, unflinching, convinced still that he had a great destiny before him, Kaeso ordered the catapults to begin firing upon the enemy army. Fiery projectiles of death rained upon the Pharaoh's army, for these catapults had been in many battles, and had become quite precise from experience. Pharaoh then commanded his armies to charge, but as he was doing so, a cutscene played out. One of the fireballs, with incredible, nay, impossible, precision, descends upon the Pharaoh's position. Time seems to stand still, and for a moment, the Pharaoh stares directly at this projectile, a ball of death headed straight for him. The Egyptians watch in horror, as their god-king falls dead before their very eyes, bursting to flames in a spectacular fiery explosion. Little is left of Pharaoh or his chariot, and despair seeps into the Egyptian's hearts, who believe now that the heavens, and fate herself, have turned against them. The romans cheer, and Kaeso, seizing the moment, orders a charge from his cavalry. The Egyptians, with little appetite left for a fight, turn tail and flee, and their great army is promptly destroyed. From that day on, my leader became known as Kaeso the Great. (this literally became his in-game title.) He quickly dominates Egypt, and turns the wealth of the granary of the world to his coffers. The common people hear of this story, and begin to worship him, and his sway with the common people becomes quite strong. The roman senate, jealous of Kaesos' new found influence, and fearing his power, send a missive to the man himself, commanding he *commit suicide effective immediately* . Kaeso of course, refuses, and a long and bloody war begins against Rome herself. But that is a story for another time. I have never had such an impossible and epic experience in any game ever, before or since. I don't know what the odds of that happening were, but my guess is that they are pretty low. For this reason, Rome TW is my favorite TW game ever. Hope you enjoyed :)

I'd say that about sums up the 2 games quite well. Want to play a Grand Strategy game with REAL TIME BATTLES, play Rome Remastered, want to play a RTS with GRAND STRATEGY ELEMENTS? Play Rome 2. Shogun 2 really stuck that balance between NEW and OLD total war. Honestly i think the thing i hate MOST about modern total war, all those immersive mechanics have been replaced by "a number" or "a bar that fills over time", as well as many features being CUT over the years. the Campaign side of the game just feels so Shallow, life less, streamlined. The battles haven't fair much better. While games may change the AI never seems too, seriously how often since Rome 2 do you see the ai just form a gelatinous BLOB with its entire army which you then proceed to dismantle with Artillery and in some cases Magic. Hell id wager the AI in Rome Remastered could and would beat a Modern TW AI. Not to mention garrisons which turn what would be a rolf stomp into a slog, because generals are TIED to armies, Also killing the general is now a BAD THING to do since they just respawn a fresh one. Its like CA knows the ai is dumb so they give them multiple safety padding. Not to say Modern total war is all bad, their certainly is fun to be had, but i cant shake the feeling their is something missing, something that was lost after Shogun 2 and to a grater extent Attila. Whats are those old sayings "If it ain't broke don't fix it" and "back to basics", i feel like those 2 things really need to be looked at. NEW ENGINE, SEE WHAT WORKED in previous games and more importantly WHAT DIDNT, bring back that IMMERSION and DEPTH that has been stripped out over the years. And hopefully some vastly improved if not perfect AI.

I really don't think Rome 1, or remastered, was all that complex in terms of the grand strategy. Rome 2, while it streamlined certain aspects (city/province management), still offers a level of nuance to diplomacy and faction management that is totally lacking from Rome 1. Also, Rome 1's AI is in no way better than what Rome 2 offers. AI general suiciding into prepared infantry formations anyone?

@@AndysTake The inability to detach units is a HUGE restriction. Tbh the collors of R2 are weird. It feels blurry and lack of "life". The colors of the first Rome were more vibrand and felt better. Also the R2 has zero collision impact, it's basically a "number" model. In Rome 1 the charges of your cavalry could change the course of a battle in a short time, as in historical battles. Rome 2 is a blurry dead collor game wich is fun and try to be more complete but actually lack's simplicity and "life". The battles feels weird. Napoleon and Empire still have better battles than it.

This is appreciated. To be honest, I've been wanting to try these for years. And while I am a Total War fan, I think they've gotten fairly complex with each edition. More things to pay attention to and that you need to do to have success in the game. My last Total War game, Attila, so sadly had waned interest in, despite it being very well made. To that end, I am thinking Rome 2 will be entirely too similar to Attila.

They actually got watered down HEAVILY. Battles are a joke, while the campaign map is overly complicated and way more restricted for no reason. Try a rear charge with cavalry in Rome 2 against a unit already engaged against another and then do the same in the Remastered. You will see what I mean. A lot of battle mechanics make tactics truly useless. You just click forward and either die or kill depending on a stat card. It's like two unit cards fighting each other and not two UNITS of WARRIORS, etc. SHOGUN 1&2, ETW, NTW, RTW, MEDIEVAL 1&2 are amazing despite the many bugs. The rest? I like Rome 1 better. I just got into the total war games so I’m not some old time fan. I have both of the games and in my opinion Rome Total War 2 it’s just too complicated in ways that it shouldn’t be the battles are tedious and units just form massive blobs. as for the stuff that was fixed it’s nice and all but it’s just way too convoluted in my opinion all these extra tasks and things just for 3% bonuses and stuff. Rome one is straight to the point and I also like the way the units look better , the cool speeches you get before a battle and the way the soldiers fight is just much more entertaining. they look a lot cleaner and organized and I know that might not be as historically accurate but I personally like it better. Rome 1 remastered is indeed more cartoony but personally I like that. It looks cool. Like a fun game. For those who like more realistic stuff I’m sure they are gonna like Rome 2 better but personally I just think it’s too complicated and boring overall. I’m not some old fan so I’m not going off nostalgia as I stated already I’m young and I just got into the series. If you add mods like the imperium surrectum one then you’d be crazy to say that Rome 2 is “the more advanced product” cause that mod makes the game amazing in pretty much every area.

Rome remastered is superior in some aspects to Rome II, from the battle music to various elements of the UI. Battle wise, its better. Rome II has some better advantages over RR. As a series set in the Roman Period? A must buy. As a total war games? Two different ends of the spectrum I think. Both are great to play tbh if you like the setting. As a total war fan however, I'd try both and see. For the Roman period which seriously lacks a ton of video games set in it (You could have a triple AAA Roman video game than some generic BS sci-fi game with mythos and whatnot) these two are reccomended.

Rome Remastered for example is a Remastered of an incredible game - which makes it an incredible game to me (hat me for enjoying all you want). Hell yeah the first 6 months after release sucked for this game, for Cyberpunk, for every other A+ game. But guess what - Rome Total War v1.0 sucked as well. The Rome Remastered battle engine has proper collision and a realistic combat system where there is multiple vs 1 fights, Rome 2's battle engine does not have collision and the melee is all about the stupid animation mocaps which do not permit multiple vs 1 fights. Therefore, battles play better in RTW, than they do in R2TW. Since battles are basically the reason to play TW, as the strategic map experience is lacklustre at best, RTW is the better game.

While Rome 2 dropped a lot of things or made some mechanic changes I didn't approve of (most of which have been since added), it's a game I replay and Rome 1 is something I rarely touch these days. I do think I preferred the combat engine overall, but the AI being more primitive means fighting them isn't always better. If I was allowed to cheat, I would pick Attila though. It's probably my favorite TW game when playing without major mods, and I feel like it added to Rome 2 without losing much, if anything. The WRE game is one of the most fun TW campaigns I've had; Kostaltyn is a great newer one, but I don't really know or care about the factions like I do historical peoples.

If you've seen LegendOfTotalWar's Top 5 Exploit Video. Then you will know that Rome 1 has one of the NASTIEST exploit in the entire Total War Franchise, and it is the Attach and Detach Exploit, i won't go in details because it'll take too long just like Legend said. Now back to my choice on which Total War Rome is better?: In my Opinion, i prefer *Total War: Rome 2* The reason i like Total War Rome 2 is pretty much everything in it. The Graphics, the Maps, the Units, the Battles. EVERYTHING! the only problem is the Poor A.I and Massively OP Auto Resolve, which is sometimes not bad but not good either, the AI doesn't use tactics on you. Just pure Brute Force by sending all it's units to attack and not even leaving some of them as reserves and thus easy to beat with enough troops to trap and deal with them. You only need to survive in the early phase and if you do, then you are good to go and conquer everything you want. The only thing stopping you is the Inevitable Civil War that will happen after enough Imperium Bar is filled to trigger it, but unless your not on Legendary Difficulty then they can pretty much decent or weak to go against. Other than that, it's basically just steamrolling the game with your Late Game OP Units (Unless your playing a Shit Faction)

i have no nostalgia connection to the total war series, but decided to try rome remastered first and fell in love with it. I put 30 hours played in the first two weeks of owning it. For some reason, I havent been able to stick with Rome 2 for more than a few hours. It's probably because I am a noob, but I seem to feel a bit lost out there and don't like the new building system for improving territories. I keep losing track of my armies and dont care for the fact they need a general in order to move somewhere. I liked just dumping reinforcements of any amount from province to province in Rome remastered if a certain city needed more backup. For me I suppose its the "keep it simple stupid" aspect that makes me enjoy Rome remastered more. The updated graphics/map in Rome 2 are so aesthetically pleasing though, which is why I keep trying to get into it, but again, it seems Rome remastered has won me over and I am probably just sticking with that.

Rome2 any day. Rome1, even the remastered version, is clunky as hell and its depiction of the ancient world is completely off the mark (Bronze Age Egyptians, Unified Barbarians and Greeks, "secret Amazon villages", one-handed pikemen/hoplites, moo-moo wearing Spartans...the list goes on and on) . And you only even get internal politics if you play as the oh-so authentic Feudal Confederation of Rome. Battles suck with zippy, rocket-boot troops, school of fish cavalry and pathfinding that's apparently made to be as rage-inducing as possible. O yeah, and all factions are apparently run like the Mafia and one family occupies all positions of authority. People complain about the smaller armies going around, but more than once while Rome was still expanding small forces torched the all place around in Italy without the republic being able to do anything about it, the father of Hannibal himself torched all of Sicily with a small number of men during the first punic war without that Rome was able to do anything about it, losing supplies and having cities sieged and blocked by tiny contingents, also if I have the men I don't get why I can't have small contigents around as a peace management force or a checkpoint while extending the real army beyond the borders. I really like the feel of managing the cities too in Rome 1: it's a lot better, it's straight forward, you can build whatever you like if you have the requirements, and that's about it. It's not like "uh oh you already built barracks three cities down the road, so you'll have to stick to coal mines", that's just a dumb mechanic that needlessly restricts the player, I would rather have buildings cost double the resources than just being arbitrarily being locked off for no reason whatsoever.

This game needs a BLM/Antifa button so you can just totally destroy a city rather than simply massacre 3/4 of the population! 🙂Seriously; if the battle engine, which just smushes units into one another rather than have them fight properly, isn't ever sorted; even 'Divide et Impera' won't fix anything about 2. i don't care about how pretty the game map looks. i play total war for the battles not to stare at the campaign man, and the battles in rome 2 suck. units have no weight or presence on the battlefield. they can only interact through synchronized animations, the game rolls a dice for each model attacking eachother and based on the result the unit model attacks/kills/dies/defends, it plays out this on a incredibly stupid Hollywood-like animation. you clash two unit formations and every soldier in the unit 1v1's the guy in front of him. yes the motion capped fancy animations look pretty and all (pretty stupid) but this is not how battles at the time were fought, soldiers in a formation would cover and protect eachother, they would push, shove and interrupt their enemy, the frontlines would shift and move and the overwhelmed units would start slowly backing up losing ground to their opponent. that's the whole point of fighting in a formation! but rome 2 doesn't simulate this, clash two units and watch every soldier 1v1 the guy in front of him on a static front that doesn't shift or move until one of the units rout. rome 1 (and rome remastered) for all it's faults and crude animations does an incredible job at simulating how battles were really fought at the time. which is not only more realistic but it's also better gameplay wise. it's a problem every post empire total war game suffers from, these canned synced animations that just ruin the battles and therefore the game for me. you can even see how they started implementing said animations in medieval 2 and the combat is worse for it. so yeah, i'll stick with rome 1 unil CA figures out how to make a good game again.

For anyone who wants it faster, KZbin offers speed control up to 2X's. As for comparing the Rome versions, it's lose - lose in many ways. Rome Remastered has the battle graphics of 20 years ago. Rome 2 has amazing battle graphics but so many bad game designer choices. eg: Anyone interested in history would know that the number one attribute of the Roman Empire was in its road & fortification building, yet the designers took those out! It was great in Rome 1 to achieve a great victory with a captain and create a new general character. Gone! Rome 1 also had fantastic graphics for the soldier cards: the Hastati, Principae & Triarii, etc. Rome 2 threw all that away. Sad. Question: Has anything really been upgraded with the A.I. in either of the games?

Played both. Cant get into Rome 2, seems more casual yet more complicated at the same time. My buddy swears by Rome 2 but litterally everything about 1 is better than 2. Pathfinding in battles is my only complaint.

As a casual veteran since Medieval 1 - Warhammer III, I'll stick with remastered; Rome II and especially DEI mod's gameplay feel slow and awkward. It simply doesn't have a good flow, giving history an undue priority over playability.

Rome Remastered is tausend times better than Rome II (with DEI). The city/civilisation building aspect in Remastered is better than R.II, the battles in Remastered have depth and tactics. The battles in R.II (DEI also) are only some little animations for the first line of soldiers and the rest are dummies, the fight is ending before it really starts and strategy/tactics are non-existant. R.II do not even disguise the only algorithm of the game to disproportionally attack the human player and if there are not enough adversaries than creating revolting troops out of nowhere (even in provinces with 100% approval). Factions that are at war with each other waiting on the same spot to only attack the human player. R.II is still after the disastrous vanilla and tons of updates and mods a piece of garbage in comparison to Remastered. If R.II was any good Remastered hadn't had so much success. After Medieval II CA decided to got only the looks but less and less quality or real strategy or historical accuracy.

@@jd7896 Medieval 2 with his many mods is in the same way like Remastered a superb Total War. I like it very, very much. Before Remastered came out, I played exclusively Medieval 2 and Mods for it. Only for one example, Medieval 2 with the mod "De Bello Mundi" is still a much better Total War than Rome 2.

What I hate about R2TW is how a lot of the mechanics are vague or completely unexplained, even with tutorials. 10 years later and I still have no clue how food or families are supposed to work, and since the AI ignores all of the deeper mechanics anyway it can feel pretty frustrating, and in my opinion overhauls like DEI make it even worse. They greatly increase the difficulty of the mechanics on the player side, but give the AI even more cheat codes and hidden buffs. It stops feeling realistic and hardcore when the AI can spawn free armies out of nowhere at a rate that's beyond the vanilla game. I feel like the Rome Remaster and the eventual Medieval Remaster will also outdo the newer games in modding, since there are way fewer restrictions on the engine.

But Germania, Dacia and Pontus aren't unlocked for some reason.

I am fairly certain that Seleucus is my ancestor, and I just can't get enough of playing as my Selucids. I want to like Rome 2, but it's so boring. The UI, the graphics, the voice acting, the music, everything just feels dull and drab. Auto-resolve is so good that I can almost never justify fighting battles on the field. Building your cities feels more like a puzzle than progression. Ironically, the internal politics of Rome 2 is my favorite feature despite it being near universally hated. It's oddly deep and rewarding once you learn it. I just wish the rest of the game could keep my interest. Rome 1 on the other hand immediately grabs my attention every time I start it back up. It's unbalanced, it's not historical, it's clunky, it's kind of dumb, but it has so much charm and personality. It will always be the pinnacle of Total War to me.

Although I think Rome 2 is good, there are just several items from the old school Total Wars that are just better. Here is where Rome: TW is just better IMO: 1. City management is a lot better in Rome TW, I just like the setup with population, buildings (with the graphics), etc. 2. Navy: I like that you need fleets to move your armies instead of just walking into water 3. Army Management: I like that you can build armies in your cities and move around. Although the army stacks is a better idea when it comes to AI (it gets annoying in Rome: TW to fight wave after wave of wimpy stacks sent out by the AI). However, I like controlling the garrison of the cities 4. Greece: Greece has more cities and is more dynamic. I felt like Greece was too small in Rome 2. It was the central power of that time and it really ruins playing Macedon or other Greek states that taking Greece is so easy 5. Seleucia: This is better done in Rome TW historically although they are too weak and AI Seleucia gets killed immediately (however they are a blast to play as). I felt like Babylon/Seleucia province should have been owned directly by Seleucia player although I do like their vassal system. Need a way to annex Vassals, however Things about Rome 2 that are better 1. Army stacks is a cool concept but I hate not having stronger garrisons to watch our lines so a blend of both would have work better 2. Extending map to India 3. Leveling up the characters 4. More factions 5. Egypt is actually historically correct 6. The other campaigns are nice, especially Augustus one, Aurelian one, and the Peloponnesian War one. Surprised we never got an Alexander the Great one...

Also to add, as weird as this sounds, I like the aesthetic of the original Rome better. It has better music, brighter graphics, etc. Even without the remastered, it just looks better. It holds up well today graphically. Gameplay wise, it is a little better as well. I feel like Rome 2 emphasizes ranged units too much. I feel like the units behave and function better from a historical perspective in Rome 1 even if most of the factions have fantasy-like units (war dogs, bronze age Egypt, etc.).

For me it became assassin's creed game, i needed to assassinate a lot, and i mean a lot of people, i had one or two assassin's with max lvl everything killing people all over the east 😁 i played with Seleucid, very good faction, conquered most of the east. 😁
