Tip: Trimmer Line is "hydrophilic". Soaking it in water for 24 hours will greatly help with durability.
Which Trimmer Line is Best? In this video I tested Oregon Gator Line (square), Husqvarna Titanium Force (round), Stihl Premium (round), XTreme Professional (square), and Cyclone (hexagon). All trimmer line tested were .095"/2.4mm. I purchased all trimmer line using my own money. I am not sponsored by any of these brands in any way.

first test might be a bit flawed. while the drill might be rated at a max speed of 2500 RPM, that rating is with an empty chuck. once you clamp that much extra weight into your chuck, the actual max RPM is going to be significantly lower.

I’ve used a bunch of different string types as I’ve worked for a lawn company in the past and also worked for myself mowing on the side. The biggest annoyance and time wasters with trimmers are: non speed feed head systems, and trimmer line broken at the eyelet which causes you to have to open the head.

It's not a "problem" and never was. Line is a consumable, just buy standard line at a good price point and put new line on when the old is worn down. Very simple does not require hiring an expert unless you are just lazy.

TheBanhagel I’ve tried lots of the “big box” store trimmer lines. I have a trimmer that takes a large diameter line (Redmax), and I got tired of burning through cheap line so quickly. I now buy my line in big spools from J Thomas parts online (online commercial landscape equipment and parts supply store). It lasts much longer than store bought stuff, and a large spool will keep you stocked for quite a long time.

Just do cuts with the line running parallel with the fence. Then run it back parallel with the grass slightly away from the fence. You'll run into less string pulling and line welds that way. Not to mention you'll have better fence line edging. Sometimes you have to make the double pass with fences.

One thing to note about trimmer string is that it does age. As it ages it becomes stiffer and more brittle thus affecting durability. If you have old string, it has been found that soaking it in water for 24hours or more can restore some of it's flexibility. When purchasing new string be wary of anything that appears to have been sitting on the shelf for a long time.

Strapping a trimmer to a self propelled mower was a beautiful thing. Please keep these great evaluations coming. I look forward to every one. The brush cutter blade test was particularly helpful. The Husqvarnas and Stihls had more power than our Echo, but the Echo was really smooth. It didn't vibrate as much as the others. If I was working on smaller stuff like pulpwood I would always grab the Echo.

I think it is a dumb idea. Hard big wire destroys ALL trimmer line, even the .155 line. You have to simply keep away from it to have any chance of keeping your line. What I care about is how well it cuts (not really tested here) and how well it hangs in there (pretty well tested, although tough to be consistent on the weeds).

Thought the same thing and never considered string tracking straight after hitting a fixed object. It would definitely make a consistent grass height while cutting. Keep up the good work! I really enjoy your unbiased testing. A short story and an idea for a video: My grandfather had a welding shop in Mississippi and we offered two kinds of mower blade sharpening. One was a ground edge (and balance) and the other was a peened (blacksmith style cold pounded on an anvil) edge. The lawn service guys would swear the peened edge would outlast the ground edge, which makes sense as the edge would become work hardened. However I quietly worried that the edge would become brittle and fracture rather than just being dented. Maybe a comparison is in order? Anyway, just a thought. Thanks again!

I'm really interested to see if there's a wear difference when running a mower with each type of edge in different situations. For instance mowing low brush or areas with mole or gopher hills or maybe loose soil or sand. Even hitting rocks, etc. Also I wonder if there's a cut quality difference- especially after whacking a few twigs or some dirt. I'm also interested to see if little chips of the metal snap of the peened blade. At the shop we mostly dealt with lawn service folks when doing mower blades and they didn't get into anything really gnarly. But home-gamers and farm folks get into some crazy snags and ill advised situations. Thanks again for your awesome videos and fairness without sponsorship.

Great testing, as always. Love the channel. I think one consideration is that proper trimming skill requires that you angle the head of the trimmer so that you’re cutting “at” rather than just “cutting flat” - like when trimming near bricks or metal edging. This saves the most trimmer cord - more than using any brand. Having had a mowing business for 8 years, echo cord seemed to stay the sharpest, longest, while trimming. I found through the years that round cord requires more cutting time to get all the grass. Trade-off’s maybe?

First off, I'd like to say, i really like your videos, honest, unbiased tests, in real life test situations. Probably the best I've seen on KZbin. Dont know if anyone has mentioned this or not, but I was hoping to see some Rotary brand trimmer string. I don't have a lot of trimming to do as I live in town now and recently purchased the Milwaukee trimmer so I wanted to get the best string that would take the least amount of power to turn since it is battery powered. I used to think there wasn't a difference until I tried it. Its considerably quieter, runs "flatter", and lasts a lot longer compared to the big name brands. And to top it all off, its made in U.S.A.! Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing more videos!

I’d go for the echo speed feed 450. Much better than the 400. I keep eyeing the C26-2 at the stihl dealer and I might buy it for my smaller trimmer. But anything that can handle the 450 gets the 450
@1d1hamby

I haven't tried the 450 yet, but I think the 26-2 isn't worth it. The Echo 400 fits Stihl with an adapter pack.
@nsatoday
@nsatoday 5 жыл бұрын
The 450 is larger, flatter bottom. It can fit larger diameter line if you so choose and has replaceable eyelets which is nice. The C26-2 would be nice for a FS-94R or FS-70R. Something you won’t run .105 or larger line through. I’m aware of the adapter because i run the speed feed head; however, it would be nice to not have to use it. And assuming it doesn’t have any design flaws I’d rather use the 26-2 over the 400. But I’d rather use the 450 on anything more powerful than the 94

I use Echo's speed-feed 400 heads to resolve the issue of loading twine onto a string trimmer. I've used them professionally when I worked as a grounds super. They tap down mechanism to extend string will wear down somewhat quickly if you tap it on concrete or asphalt frequently but it will last a few years if you tap it on the soil. We had 4 trimmers and usually bought new heads each year: we had a 800 car parking lot with islands and 6 sport fields we mowed and trimmed around. I could reload a head in under a minute with new twine. They really are great heads and completely worth the 30 bucks.

No codes on any vehicles and it's so cheap to do that I've saved way more on fuel, so I keep on doing it. It's formulated to be completely burnt in a combustion chamber and that then released into higher class waters, so it must be pretty clean or the nanny state would've clamped down on it.

I run pre-mix in my four stroke small engines to give the top end and head a fighting chance at living a long life in these hot-as-fuck TN summers. Never put it in the ol' pick-em-up though. Admittedly I run the same 40:1 premix in the four strokes as my strimmer uses. Bet if I ran that in my F150 it'd clog the cat. Engine wouldn't give a damn, though, carburetted 300s generally don't and the thing ran okay on some contaminated-with-diesel gasoline aside from a bit more spark knock while it burned that shit off.

My new Husqvarna 128LD string notes in the instructions that if you soak the trimmer line in water for 48 hours it will resist breaking better than if you don’t. I still have quite a few feet on my old trimmer line but I have soaked mine and as soon as I put it on I will be testing it. BTW, I do like how well you think out the parameters of the testing you do on everything. For the most part, you are very thorough and this is better to be done the way you do it than any laboratory tests could ever prove. Keep up the good work.

I believe the lead mostly acts as a lubricant, and I am pretty sure it was mostly removed from everyday gasoline because it ruins catalytic converters and because inhaling lead fumes is one of the quickest ways to get lead poisoning. I'm not an expert though so don't quote me on this.

Maxpower 778 , AV gas is usually 100LL, That's what I run in my snowmobile end of season when temperatures are warmer then mid winter. Also I use it for storage for summer since its non oxygenated. Dealers up in Maine will mix it 75/25 if u bring in a newer EFI sled that has water in gas from sitting over summer and wont run come winter, they drain out sled and run the mix when they send sled off. So in EFI I'd say no since computer will adj timing and fuel. Most of the backcountry riders that put a aftermarket turbo on their sled will also run the 100LL AV gas cause its usually readily available and fresh from airports in remote areas. In a carb motor, youd have to jet for it

In 15 years of using string trimmers it's pretty safe to say I've used all of the line you used in just about every imaginable variation. I personally like the Husquevarna cord myself but what I found over the years isn't so much the cord I used as the technique in which I used my trimmer. Almost everyone has their own ways of using string trimmers some have good techniques and some have bad ones. Consistency and technique is the key to using less string over time. Good video.

I don't usually comment on the videos I watch but i just felt I needed to on this one. I own a lawn service in the Charlotte NC area. I have been in business for 12 years. I now only use Oregon Gatorline Magnum Super Twist. I have tried virtually all of the major brands and most all of the off brands. The Gatorline Magnum last longer than any I have used. It is much better at edging and trimming chain link fences. It cost a little more than some of the others but is well worth it to me. If you cut professionally you know how a chain link fence eats trimmer lines for lunch, but not this one. This line is also made in the square shape, but the spiral spins much easier, has less blow down, and seems to use less fuel. The only draw back is you can't ride this around on an open trailer the UV rays will break it down after a while. I always buy the 1500 ft spool and put it on my spool rack but unless you cut tons and tons of yards it will break down before you use it up. Keep it in the tongue box or the truck out of the sun. Hope this helps someone.

Twisted ss cable... bad idea. One word. Shrapnel. Secondly it unwinds and makes a hella mess. But a piece of wire in the shin will give u all the answers u need.

@@klosnoski - It won't carry anything near the velocity of the wire coming off the wire wheel on my electric hand grinder. And I take hits from that in the gut all the time. I'm going to try some throttle cable from our racing karts. (If it ever stops raining around here)
