There's a certain magic to the first game's story. Felt a lot like a classic and romantic JRPG.

I wouldn't call class change in VC3 pointless. For instance, Serge is better off as a Sniper than as an engineer, since his negative traits want him to move as little as possible and he has good accuracy. Also, although it's not a prefered class for Kurt, he benefits from picking double movement from Scout (that, and Scout's own movement has good synergy with Kurt's Direct Command unique ability as it allows him to fully replenish his movement bar after moving him a couple of times).

I'm of the mind that VC3 is the best story (if you managed to play it) I think that a easy home run would be to remake vc3 with vc 4 style graphics and gameplay. The themes of playing soldiers who were 'unwanted' and trying to find something to fight and live for during a war between countries/homes that didn't really want them was a inspiring but at times lonely feeling story.

VC3 IMO was the most tonally consistant. The silly stuff was mostly left to the side stories while the main plot remained quite serious. VC3 also kept to its WW2 theme the best. The big reason VC3 wins for me is how its the only game in the series whos final act didn't go off a cliff. I did not like the ends to VC1 or VC4.

I'd say VC3 in on top of my list. The story missions are quite challenging. I got shocked when the massive fortress-like tank needed to be destroyed. I know, nothing can beat the first installment.

Totally agree. It’s true that a complex or too long story can be annoying, that’s why VC 1’s story is good.

VC 3 best story, characters, difficulty and balance VC 1 best map design VC 4 best gameplay VC 2 good in gameplay, balance and difficulty, but highschool setting ruined everything Overall: VC3 > VC1 = VC4 > VC2 (all games are very good). Mainly problem of VC4 is the game is too similar to first game. They took some of good ideas in terms of gameplay of VC3 but they also took a bit story elements from VC2, which is bad (highschool anime troopes). Overall its hard to say which is game better, VC1 or VC4, so i gave ,,='' between them.

i totally agree to the gameplay but storywise in my own opinion, vc3 is on top of MY list, i just like its darks story compared to other ones, specially the focus for its sub characters as a family - they have their own fragments story to share with and they really hold up together unlike other games from vc series, the recruits you get mostly like a cannon fodder for your battlefield.

both VC2 & VC4 have side stories dedicated to the non main characters of the squads which is something that is way better than what VC1 did

Personal Opinion, but: Story- VC3>VC4>VC1>VC2 VC3 delves into somewhat uncharted story grounds with a penal squad being the central characters, and that every single character is well pronounced throughout the Campaign (Even the later recruits). Its inclusion of the cast from previous games is so as to flesh out the characters more rather than just have them be stagnant as a surprise (case in point, Baldren, Audrey and Leon). VC3 also is the most stable in terms of tone as opposed to the other entries in the series. Also, the Calamity Ravens are so far the coolest villains in the franchise, partly because appearance, and also because they have the most well presented and frequently challenged ideals (creating a place for Darcsens in the Empire by contributing decisive victories for the Imperial forces as a Darcsen Squad). VC4 and VC1 are REALLY close in terms of story, but VC4 wins because its main cast turns out to be far better characterised. Notable standouts being Minerva, Kai and Raz. I am also a sucker for uphill battles (also why I love VC3) and the Ranger Corps have nothing BUT uphill fights and cathartic victories. Also, Klaus and Crymaria. Really love that they went that way with their character arcs. Is it bloated with cutscenes? Yeah. Are all of them plot essential? Not always. Are they fun to watch? Definitely, because those cutscenes tend to focus on the characters through dialogue and shenanigans. Besides, it's surprisingly dark following the Siegval Line. VC1 is really good, and I would actually put it above VC2 in terms of gameplay purely because VC2 felt like a chore to play most of the times. VC1 is also the reason I am writing this essay, so it gets props for introducing the key things VC3 AND VC4 fleshed out. Its a simple story, but simplicity gives it a distinct flavor to that of its predecessors. And VC2 has a story.

Does anyone else despise how tanks work in VC1? They take 2 CP to move (making them utterly pointless unless a level requires them) and when you do have to use them, they're the clunkiest vehicle I've ever had to drive in a videogame.

yeah I remembered back then that I would literally choose to spend my remaining CP to heal up rather than using the tank.

It's pretty much invulnerable against everything except anti tank weapons and other tanks, can kill just about anything on the battlefield, can be equiped with smoke rounds and finally IT'S A TANK not a motorcycle it's suppose to be big and clunky. overall it's op and the fact it costs more to use just balances out the game more.

@@RB-dn4pj i don't know how you play "Valkyria Chronicles", but on VC1 tanks are just bad because they lack the most OP thing , which is movement and they cost 2 CP. Scouts on VC1 are just tremendously broken due to most of the victory conditions are capture enemy base , you just abuse order defense + caution , and rush it down with Alicia. VC1 is easily the most unbalance game out of the 4 installments.

@@RB-dn4pj I always use the tank as a moving barrier with a cannon, in certains map the tank can be basically a walking wall where the enemies when moving too much close are slaughtered by the units behind the tank

I completely agree with the list. Overall I would say VC1 > VC3 > VC4 > VC2, not in terms of story or gameplay, but game experience in general.

I've had the first remastered on ps4 for a while and just keep putting it off. I just keep putting the series off in general. Love the idea, but just seems like they've not made a game that excels in all areas yet. So, I may just keep waiting, since there's no shortage of great stuff to play.

The third has the best story, the second is the worst in all fronts and the fourth is a clone of the first but with better maps. The PSP melee classes are what ruin them for me so for me VC4 is best gameplay

Can say I don't agree with the list in big part. My only problem with 1 is the lack of presence of the secondary cast like except for selvaria the villains appear few times and I always have to search for Gregor to remember that he existed and he is supossed to be a big villain. But the same happens with characters like Varot Rosie and Largo they don't have much of a presence outside of their optional mission and two scenes, and is a shame because they are really cool. The other thing that bothers me in the first is how everyone says that it is grounded but it has a random pig with wins that only appears for two scenes for wathever reason and things like that, they don't ruin. The story but idk if adopting a pig in the middle of war is the more grounded thing in the world, just don't sell it as good because grounded please, it is good because it knows that it wants to be a more romantic story of War instead of triying to be 20 things at a time. In my case my favorite in general would be 3, I know is not great but I really like it. The general gameplay makes good use of the grid system on the psp making it a mechanic more than a downgrade (even if it is for limitations), the protagonist habilities are fun to use and apport ideas that will be used in 4 likethe ability of Kurt. The general cast have presence in all the story instead of just being there silent like in other games, sure they can be wacky characters but in the general story normally they don't throw out of the serious scenes with a wacky commentary in the situation to make it a problem. And of course there are the missions for each of these characters, I know that it was added in 2 but still is one of my favorite additions, and makes a room for characters like Gloria that are really charismatic. And yes the tone can be to edgy at times yes the tone can change a comedy XD from time to time without warning, but still I love the main cast enough to make Kurt one of my favorite characters in all time, and I think that is justification enough for me making a pass on these problems xd In rewards to 4 yes really good gameplay, bad gimmicks at times which stops it from being truly great. The villains have more presence but they aren't good except for Walz that at least is charismatic, the main cast isn't that great either even if I still like a lot of moments I can say I like every scene they are in. The additional chapters for the squad members are still cool additions. And on 2 I still gotta to play it to give an opinion that isn't lmao to anime = bad XDXDXDXD. That honestly I don't feel like justified at first sight

The 4 is just a clone of the First. The third was the only one that felt as an evolution, aka less anime. Sadly Melee classes are ridiculous and the graphics are really ugly. A remake could fix a lot
