In this video I reveal my top pick for what I believe is the best and most affordable legendary receiver. My choice? The 1978-1980 Pioneer SX 780, featuring super low distortion and 45 Watts. They can be had for $300 to $600, depending on condition, and are beautiful to look at and sound great. Remember, always buy as cosmetically perfect a unit as your budget allows. I love my RT 701 Pioneer Reel to Reel. I paid $280 off EBay about 6 years ago. It’s built like a tank at over 40 pounds. And still sounds so good.

I love the wall of sound! Reminds me of my late father's Concept 16.0. I loved that thing as a teen blasting music lol. I ended up selling it later on in life when the power button needed work on it (plus, it weighed a ton and was hard for me to move). I was told I was crazy when I asked for $250 to a collector that was skilled in making fixes to it. Then like a week later this awesome man bought it for his man cave bc he knew how to fix it. He had a smile on his face the whole time he viewed it and then when he walked away with it to his car lol. Love ya Rosie! Hugs!

I took my original, untouched 2030 Marantz and use it now as a preamp and found a used Emotiva amp online. Added a decent DAC and the sound has improved quite a bit.

A fun hobby. I picked up a Marantz 2270 about 10 years ago. When they were new I couldn't afford one. It's probably now worth about triple what I paid for it. I have upgraded my main system to state of the art.

Good choice. I have a similar wall of shame that I have collected in the pursuit of sound. I either have or have audio buddies that have all of the flagship receivers of the 70s . The pioneer 780 is a great starting place. Great mid-fi unit. I have one and enjoy it.

I found my SX-780 three years ago at Goodwill for $25. It was in fantastic shape. The only issues they have are the STK packs. Decent counterfeits can be found but be careful.

Love the Pioneer SMQ 300, I have one too. Unfortunately, I lost my SX 580 when the guy that was supposed to repair it disappeared with it. His shop was vacant when I stopped by to see how the repair was going. Maybe I'll try and find myself a SX780. 🤞

Hello Rosie and chat , Awesome Rosie those gorgeous amps , That Kenwood is beautiful built so well ,Rosie I don't think I see a H.H Scott on your shelf and I have always wanted one of those integrated ones they made from the 60"s and that awesome Pioneer ooooh very nice my grandfather had the 1250 from Pioneer and like a dummy I sold it when I was young and dumb lol. If I was buying vintage I would buy vacuum tube before 1965 or solid state made after 1976. Early generation solid state, regardless the brand, was crap. I speak with experience: I was in the industry from 1978 till 2007. I have a degree in electrical engineering. I was a licensed repair tech and I sold the stuff. I met all the engineers, national sales managers etc., with every major firm. I would buy a Pioneer receiver for the4 expressed purpose of reselling it cuz there's a sucker born every minute. You want your money's worth? Look for Sansui, Onkyo or Luxman. Maybe Yamaha but not after 1981. Pioneer? They were the Hyundai excel of their day. Not even in the Toyota class. They were abundant and highly discounted but not state of the art. Modern resale prices, quite frankly, are a joke.
