Thanks so much for the thorough comparisons. I want to learn to play violin but living in an apartment has always made me hesitate since I know it will take a lot of practice and I don't want to disturb my neighbours. Knowing there are products that mute down the sound quite a bit has convinced me to get started! 😊

I use a Viowiess caterpillar mute so that I can see over the top of it. (Beginner) What I also do to muffle the sound is cover the F holes. Why don't you sell something that does that? I sewed a silly little quilted pinafore for my instrument and it makes a huge difference.

Very nice. Would you also recommend the tourte mute ? their small size is an advantage. Another question: is 1 tourte mute enough for all 4 strings or do you need 1 per string...this is a mystery to me.

The Tourte mute is great, but it's more of an "orchestral" mute rather than a practice mute. You don't need one per string, but it doesn't really mute the sound very much - maybe 15% or so, so it's similar to the rubber mute I played first. Most orchestra directors have a favorite mute that they use!

Thank you so much for the information! Would practicing on mute damage the violin or no? I notice the sound is a bit off after I take it off. Also, I have been using the rubber one. I feel it dampens my violin when I first put it on and later it seems getting louder. So violins can actually adapt to the vibration after practicing with mute?

Practicing with the mute on shouldn't damage the violin, that's mostly the point of them (assuming you're not gauging the bridge or something intense when putting it on, or if it falls off and scratches the violin) But I've also wondered about why it sounds a little strange for the first few seconds after you take a practice mute off. I think half of it is just that our ears have to readjust to the new sound. But some of it feels like the violin has to get "reved" up again with the sudden influx of vibrations.

Hi! I have been wondering lately if using a mute changes the intonation ? I feel like when i tune without mute and then play with it, it sounds a little off. I have an iron mute. Great video btw!

Hi! Great question! A mute can possibly affect intonation; the question is whether it would affect your playing or not. You can always consider recording yourself with and without the mute and hear or see the playback. It is the best way to diagnose if the issue is from the mute itself or if perhaps you may play a little differently with the mute on/off.

Please angle the mute slightly towards the D and G string side, since they make more vibrations.
