So good to know about practising mutes... I didn't know that I could buy one for practising, now I've come back to the violin after 40 years! I don't sound very fluent & I don't want to annoy my neighbours! You're such a joy to be able to learn things off, please know you are dearly appreciated 💐

I have a ultra practice mute. And i play with it most of the time. And since i am a beginner and i sound horrible. I dont want my neighbors knocking at my door. And the violin is very loud to my ears. But i do get suprised by the volume if i dont have the mute on.

As a beginner a mute would allow me to practice bow technique at any time ? this surely is a good reason to use mute when neighbours can be an issue. In the daytime hours I can play normal acoustic sound .. great information in your video :),...thanks..

I have a rubber practice mute for my violin and also my viola.. I find that I get pretty good attenuation on the violin, considering it’s a practice mute, but on the viola, its larger mute only deepens the sound a little. I’m not sure if it’s slightly oversized, if the rubber material is different, or if that type a mute dampens higher frequencies better. Does anybody have any similar experiences or thoughts on this? I purchased rubber practice mutes at Musician’s Friend specifically made for full size violin and viola.
@langhamp8912
@langhamp8912 5 жыл бұрын
I have a couple of different rubber mutes that entirely cover the bridge, some are hard rubber, some are sort, some are sort hollow rubber. I think the fairly hard rubber ones give you the most options because you can press it down for very quiet, or perch it above for just a bit less loud. I do notice that with the rubber mutes it can often be hard to catch and vibrate the E string, whereas without the mute I can catch it easily most of the time. My hard rubber mutes I didn't even buy on purpose; it came with the Zone shoulder rest.

I use magnets on either sides of the bridge, works great and doesn't restrict your view of the strings.

Good morning Ms. Joy, I did not know such things a 'mute'..... existed? Learn something intelligent and useful all the time on your channel, thank you. I feel I am disturbing my neighbors with practice, however, they do not say nothing they probably think its my radio sound of classical music or such since , I do not have a television period do not have time busy with other studies. Also, other disturbing noising are around that are not so 'aesthetic', you know? So thanks I am going to purchased one as soon as possible. Have a good week.

Thank you for your work!! :) I sound so terribe that I will go back to a practice mute otherwise I will not practice at all because I am so heartbroken about my sound. But my bridge was made very thin . Do you think this will be a problem for the mute? which one would you recomment? I would be very happy for a link. I don´t know for exampe what is better rubber or metal. Maybe I am lucky and you have the time. :)
@JoyLeeViolin
@JoyLeeViolin 3 жыл бұрын
Dear Joani, your thin bridge should not be much issue with using any mute as thinner bridge make it easier to place the mute on. The metal mute I am showing in this video reduces the sound the most, but there is also a mute made of rubber which looks just like the metal one and reduces the sound quite well also. I hope you can try. Happy practising!

I work in a Power Plant as a Power Engineer (Operating Engineer in the states). We have to have our hearing tested annually. The technician who tested my hearing asked if I was a hunter because my left ear is a bit weaker than my right ear. It didn't dawn on me right away but I though about it later. My hearing is very good for my age - I am 48 - but I think playing the high notes, especially when your strings get old and start to sound a bit shrill cause hearing to deteriorate in a violinist's left ear. I was wondering if there is an esthetic ear plug or something similar for the left ear only. If that were the case, one could still hear well with the right ear but protect one's hearing in the left ear.
@JoyLeeViolin
@JoyLeeViolin 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Trevor, there is a custom made special ear plugs for orchestral musicians which reduces its volume while allowing the musicians to be able to hear. For me this was too much reduction of the sound to play well in ensemble, but you might be interested to try it. Happy violin playing!

Hi Joy! When I use my metal practice mute, it changes the pitch of my strings. They go flat about .5 herz to 1 herz. The G and D are affected the most, the E hardly noticeable. Does anyone else notice this? I guess the mute restricts the forward and back vibrations of the bridge. What else could be causing this???

I compare a mute to playing "pp" or "ppp" without the mute + some mellower tone. I don't use a mute mainly because I want to train my bow arm to control my bow distribution to intentionally sound almost silent with a few hairs barely touching or putting light pressure on my violin strings. (ex: Prokofiev's classical symphony excerpt) I wonder if that be musically correct if I had to put a mute on every "pp" section?
@JoyLeeViolin
@JoyLeeViolin 2 жыл бұрын
Dear Fate, it's great that you want to develop your RH bow technique further with extreme piano tone colour. However, using a mute for every "pp" dynamics would not be the correct approach, as the mute should be put on in performance only when the composer indicated as such, and also mute changes the tone colour as well as the volume. Happy practising!

I have one question: it seems to me that even playing with the metal mute still makes the violin sound relatively loud, and I am always afraid of disturbing my neighbours. How to know when to use vibrato or not in orchestra music?
@JoyLeeViolin
@JoyLeeViolin 5 жыл бұрын
Using vibrato is up to the violinist. Some times in an orchestra a conductor might ask musicians to vibrate in a certain way or not to vibrate. But most of the times, musicians are free to vibrate as they would like. In general vibrating on long notes is highly encouraged. I hope this answers your question.
