Really excellent tips, Keith! Thanks! 😃 A tip about CA glue... I learned to use baking soda, but any fine dust is going to work. (PVC dust works specially well.) Basically you put the CA glue and put the dust over it. It's going to harden like a concrete! I use it a lot to fix or modify rc cars and stuff like that. 😊 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

FWIW, A few years ago I built some sash windows for the house I'm currently in. The joint from the sash box to the cill was done with polyurethane as I felt that would be the one most likely to collect water but all the rest were done with Titebond 3. A decade on and all the joints are as good as the day they went in so I'm happy to conclude it works for that use.

I think the “yellow” & “white” PVA glue comment is misleading and is limited to the anglosphere and tends to be an assumption based on Titebond products. In mainland Europe Soudal is a very popular Woodworking and construction adhesive supplier. They have different PVA glues including the Water Resistant PVA. None of it is yellow.

Superglue activator is water. That is why it does not work on wet surfaces. To slightly damp surfaces it sticks immediately but is not as strong as being hardened slowly by moisture in the wood or air.

I always use waterproof pva for interior uses, polyurethane for exterior, superglue & activator for interior mitres before i fire a pin in just to temp hold. And like you, hot glue for temporary holds on things like router pattern templates etc. With the hot glue, you can spray a bit of isopropyl alcohol on after its cured, to remove it. It just peels straight off after a quick spritz of ipa 😎

I thought titebond original (the red label stuff) was aliphatic resin, where as TB2 is pva…. Is that not the case?
@StrawbyteWorkshop
@StrawbyteWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
You're correct, original is an aliphatic resin, type 2 PVA and type 3 is a propriatary resin. Keith mentions PVA in terms of colour which is arbitrary. White glue is so coloured because PVA largely replaced casin based glues made from milk solids with Elmer's making the change first setting the colour expectations. Aliphatic resin has a yellow hue, as per titebond, so if your going to build out a range of glues with different properties then of course you going to tint them to match your existing brand.

Im a sundeck builder. Do you have a recommendation for gluing Trex decking and similar materials. We haven't tried expoxy because it hasn't been a big deal breaker if you get a gap in a miter on a deck outside. That being said I would like to find a glue for making and keeping tight joints. We also use the standard PVC trim boards. Thay can generally be glued with a vinyl adhesive or standard PVC glue.The real winner would be to find a glue for different brand of decking. Problem here is theya ll mak it slightly different

Would you recommend using PVA Glue in fixing the guitar bridge than other wood Glue? was the bridge holding well?
@ParaBellum2024
@ParaBellum2024 2 жыл бұрын
I generally use Evo-Stik Resin W in the blue bottle (exterior PVA), or polyurethane, which I'm careful to keep off my skin and use in well-ventilated spaces. Regarding this video, I wouldn't have used PVA for the guitar bridge, because it'll be under tension and PVA is prone to creep. For permanent gluing where creep must be avoided, I've used Cascamite, urea-formaldehyde powder to which water is added to make a paste. I think they may have changed the formula though, to make it safer and woke.

The white and yellow PVA isn't a reliable way to divide glue types and not all yellow pva glues are the same as are white glues. Much better to go off of the ratings of D1, D2, D3 and D4. Most of the time people will be using D3 and D4 in construction and building

I have found that the quality of CA glue is all over the place. The stuff sold as mitre bond is in my view just crap. The medium thickness stuff in the tiny tubes is best in my view, ( i think that is mostly all the same stuff and better quality than even the big bottles of the named brands ) large ones always go to waste around here . I once had a bottle i got from a little craft shop , it was very strange as it had a batch number and a code for the type of CA glue it was along with the address of the shop . A custom order ? That stuff was amazing! God himself could not break the bonds that stuff made, even relatively smooth plastic to plastic the bond was stronger than the plastic.

I used to work for a PVA resin manufacturer. For bonding wood, you need to ask 2 main questions: is it for use in potentially wet conditions (indoors or outdoors), and is it going to be used for joints that are likely to be under load (e.g. chair legs, where it needs to demonstrate 'creep resistance'). Then look closely at the instructions on the various brands and choose the most appropriate one. If you keep using poyurethane and epoxy glues for long enough (weeks, months) without protecting your hands, you stand a good chance of getting dermatitis, which is no joke. Finally, you can get CA glue to cure instantly in loose fitting joints by sprinkling baking soda over the wet adhesive. It sets like concrete, fills the gap and can be sanded or filed smooth soon afterwards - a model maker' trick seen in lots of KZbin videos. I really enjoy yor channel. Please keep up the hints and techniques you've developed!

Hot glue, aka hot snot, is pretty damn strong. The main issue is applying it right at melting but not hot enough to heat the material for best surface spread and adhesion. I have a glue gun that runs a bit hot. It will drool slightly bubbly hot glue over time and that's when I know it's hot enough. I fixed my over-the-range microwave with hot glue. The left side snapped internally and now there's 1 huge glue stick globbed on everything relevant in there holding it up. Been good for 2 years now.

When I did A level DT, I had a go at veneering with scotch glue, which I think is the same (or at least very similar) to hot hide glue. you boil the stuff up in a pan, spread it on and then can iron on your veneer. It stinks! I don't think I'd ever be tempted to use it again, as you can use exactly the same technique with white pva. But with PVA you don't have to boil it first, and don't get the smell of boiled animal bits 🤮

Great advice there Keith. I'm the same as you when it comes to wearing gloves mate as I find it causes a loss of grip when you have to hold something together for a while if clamps are a hinderence lol great video mate 👍🏼👍🏼

A waterproof wood glue that was very popular in boat building a few years ago and I believe is still very good for exterior applications is Cascamite. Have you given that a go Keith and if so how do you rate it?

With super glue, the activator is not only for speed, but strength too. The faster super glue cures the harder it ends up. I used to know a guy in the military that worked on attack helicopters, and he used to use super glue mixed with bicarbonate of soda to fill holes and dents that weren't too deep. It makes the glue go off almost immediately and in doing so it goes solid as a rock. Activator does a similar thing. So it isn't just speed, but the speed makes it stronger.

that's not correct activator actually weakens superglue a little bit. The slower something cures generally the harder it is. Adding baking soda will make it get hard immediately but its weaker than the pure glue. Its basically diluting the glue.

@@ganjalfcreamcorn8438 do you have any evidence of this? Because I have used super glue with bicarb and it dries super hard, way harder than glue alone, it's almost impossible to sand it, as it goes so hard, and less brittle also strangely enough. I can't comment on activator, because I use activater and super glue basically in mitre joints only and never really see the effects of it, just thought it made it harder, but I could be wrong about that. Assuming it weakens it, is just that, an assumption, one you may use with adding sand to cement, which is evidently wrong, sand makes cement way harder. Same as I believe bicarb makes super glue way harder. If you have any evidence of this other than assuming it is diluting it, then please let me know. But I have personal experience using bicarb with super glue, and from my experience it goes insanely hard. Have you actually used it before? If not maybe try it and tell me that you still think super glue alone is anywhere near as strong. I look forward to your reply.

To ensure your choice of glue is fresh, have your wife taste it, if she returns a smile the glue is bad, if she gives you an bad face then the glue is fresh!
