After a brilliant and jolly lecture on the history of Carols like 'While Shepherds Watch Their Flocks by Night', Jeremy Summerly was asked for an encore.

It only became associated with Yorkshire when a Halifax choir went on a charabanc trip to Ilkley. A couple were late back to the coach, and were lampooned unmercifully by their colleagues, using one of their well-known tunes. The rest is history.

It's a wonderful tune but it is not from Yorkshire. It was written as a hymn tune (Cranbrook) by Thomas Clark, Director of Music at Canterbury Methodist Church in the early nineteenth century - it's Kentish not Yorkshire!

The original tune came from Handel's opera Siroe.
