We Mormons love our choir which we lovingly refer to as the Motabs. We also love the King's Singers. Combined they produce memorable music. If you're a music critic and don't like this song . . . . . . . Santa ain't comin' to 'yr house this year! And that's the truf!

@Ibambikate Probably the two greatest male acapella groups of our time. It speaks volumes that both groups are big fans of each other, as well as the Swingle Singers.

Lovely. The arrangement is interesting, with more close harmony in the bass than I am used to. Maybe it takes perfect pitch do make it work! (Last I heard, all or most of the KS has perfect pitch.) The audio level is quite low.

@Wally773MTG Wally, I am a fairly accomplished amateur singer. I've sung "O, Holy Night" with organ and choir of 15 backing me up. I've sung "I Wonder as I Wander" a capella from the balcony, I've directed my small church choir with instrumental accompaniment. I totally agree that, as a rule of thumb, the larger the choir, the lesser each individual's quality. HOWEVER, have you listened to the MTC? They sing "The Prayer" on here as one! They are a great choir, not just great in number.

Just ran across this. Most amazing version I've ever heard. Had to look it up, a group named for King's College in Cambridge. Love the solo tenor beginning then multi-part harmony. Quite a feat to organize a full orchestra and giant backup choir. Love that they don't keep repeating the "Fall on your knees ..." refrain, but change to the "Christ is the Lord ..." verse. There are several versions of English lyrics, plus the original French. Interestingly, the lyrics were written by an atheist (at least what that meant in 1843), and the music by a Jew. While it began in a Catholic Church, it's creators plus humanist lyrics speaking of Jesus' love and personal salvation weren't appreciated by the Vatican of the day so they tried to suppress it, but can't keep a great song down.

@Wally873MTG: I'm thinking TKS actually enjoys collaborating with the MTC, and aren't "selling out". But if they are, in actuality, selling out, here's a list of artists who also "sold out" by performing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir: Bryn Terfel (numerous gigs), Tom Brokaw, Claire Bloom, Frederica von Stade (twice), Jane Seymour, John Rhys-Davies, Brian Stokes-Mitchell, Deborah Voigt, Natalie Cole, Angela Lansbury, James Taylor, Peter Graves, Edward Hermann and, oh yeah, Renee Fleming. Shame on them. ;)

@Wally773MTG You don't know how many professional musical director I know buy their tickets to go see them to toronto when they come to canada, They've won grammys and everything, Mack Wilberg is a genius, Just listen, the more people you conduct, the harder it is to sing so perfectly as this choir, is one of the best choirs in all the world, and is not "not singers" people that say that, they are really respected in the musical business, i've never saw someone with a musical degree laugh...

@Wally773MTG Wally? How in the world can you use such prophane language whilst listening to this most GLORIOUS song? Wait,,, don't answer that, love. In future, please be careful. One can respect it if this is who and 'where' you are in life, but I implore you to be mindful of those of us who listen to this song (and the like) as a means of worship to our great and wonderous SAVIOUR, JESUS CHRIST! Thank you, Wally. Cheers, mate! - J

@fistyke Fair enough. They don't seem to use mics often, at least not noticeable individual mics. Perhaps the audio guy should have turned down his mic and the soloist didn't adjust enough.

@Kurohimemiya Yes and yes, I believe. MoTab doesn't go very often, but Kings Singers do more frequently, I believe. MoTab's website is somewhere in the doodlydoo of another video from their channel or something. Or you could google it.

Hmmm, I like them more when they sing a capella, just the six of them. The orchestra and the immense choir overwhelm the King's Singers, even when they sing amplified. Though the song is beautiful, but not in this kind of setting.

James King It's too slow and it lumbers because of the extra choir and the orchestra behind them. Very difficult to keep up the tempo and energy with so many people. Still, it's a nice job.
@Baritone459 жыл бұрын
James King In fact, have you ever seen a Mormon Tabernacle Choir number that wasn't slow and tired? They're beautifully big and full, but decidedly dull and heavy.
@82hawkeye828 жыл бұрын
+James King In Scandinavia, O Holy Night is sung very slow. To us this is how it is sung. Silent night on the other hand is sung rather faster than the English Version, as we sing ut while parading around the Christmas Three. O yes, we parade around the Christmas tree while holding hands and singing.
