Tropic Thunder is one of the few movies that I would say is a perfect 10/10. Every single person in the cast is absolutely perfect. I'm glad you do talk about all of the actors briefly because I feel like Brandon T. Jackson and Jay Baruchel don't get enough credit in the movie since they're playing the straight men to everyone else's absurdity. I think what truly highlights how well written this movie is the fact that Robert Downey Jr. got nominated for his role. White actors being cast in ethnic roles has been a problem in Hollywood even in modern history. The fact that the movie was able to satirize it (Along with method acting) using the extremely touchy subject of blackface and do so so successfully that the portrayal is met with applause by both critics and audience is quite frankly amazing. I know a lot of people say "Oh this movie could never be made today", but this movie is only 15 years old. Blackface was not acceptable 15 years ago either. It's such a fine line to walk between proper satire, and being actually offensive, and this movie manages it perfectly.

Something she said made me think of something that Laurence Olivier said to Dustin Hoffman on the set of Marathon Man. Hoffman’s character was supposed to have been awake for like 3 days and so Hoffman being a method guy stayed awake for about that long. He kept messing up the scene which aggravated Olivier who was classically trained. He supposedly told Hoffman "My dear boy, why don't you just try acting?"

It speaks more about the obsolescence of early 2000s and late 90s technology than anything else; everything tech related was so fleeting and early phased out that nothing like that really stuck.

I'm impressed at how you quickly 'got' what they were were doing, even though you hadn't seen many of the movies & memes they were parodying. This may be the most ...meta... movie I've seen. It's very self aware, and while they brutally send-up all these Hollywood clichés (which may be clichés for a reason), there is also a bit of empathy for all the characters, however outrageous they may be. I suspect the reason they got so many 'heavy hitters' in this is because everyone who saw the script recognized someone, or had similar experiences and really wanted to be a part of this self-aware spoof. I don't think anyone in this cast has done better work than they did here. Sure, many of their things are great, but Tropic Thunder is in a class by itself. Thanks for choosing this. It's always fun to see a familiar film with a first-timer. The reactions are priceless.I can also see why you want to watch it a few times. There's a LOT packed into this film, and the more you watch, the more you find. And on the subject of offensive stuff in older movies? Check out Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Most. Offensive. Role.. EVER! It was squirm-worthy at the time, but has only gotten worse with age.

Robert Downey Jr has had a long but up and down career. Back in the 80s he was a teen hearthrob who starred in several hit teen comedies and was a cast member on Saturday Night Live. Then he fell into drug addiction and was in and out of rehab for almost 20 years, during which he was unemployable and didn't make any movies; he was one of those "where are they now?" has-beens. Then this movie resurrected his career and showed the world that he could still act, and he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. This role got him cast as Iron Man the next year (2009), which re-launched him into the world famous star he is today.

Comedy has always pushed the boundaries of what is appropriate or offensive. This movie could not have been made today because so many people would feign outrage. You'd likely have boycotts of the movie, the actors, the studio, the catering company, etc. There would be protests of mock violence leading to real violence. It's not just "your generation." Everyone is guilty and we should all be a little thicker skinned.

The struggle of the production company versus new director struggle (I.e. It's some of the most godawful, yet iconically 60s style fight scenes ever made. I don't know why they thought that balling your hands together and bopping somebody with your finger blob would work. Two hands equals double power? I don't know, but it was the go-to fight move in movies back then. Doing a reaction to that scene alone would be awesome actually. it wasn't even 'blackface' in a traditional sense..it was about how Hollywood would rather use a white person they know for a part than using the real thing: Italians for native Americans, Mickey Rooney for Japanese, John Wayne for Gengis Kahn, etc, etc, etc.. for it was more commentary on Hollywood than anything (as was most of the movie... I mean man.. they got to take big ol swings at the industry that employs them... and the film made so much money, no one could say anything about that). Tom Cruise got to be that slimey studio head that I'm sure they are all familiar with the type, for instance.

Everything about this movie is great. They all play off each other so well. And Tom Cruise's performance as Les Grossman is perfect. It's one of the two best comedies of the 00's, the other being Team America: World Police. Which I hope you'll react to some day. :)

In the theater the movie started seamlessly after the real trailers. It was a very confusing few minutes before figuring it out. The funniest start to any movie I've seen! Tobey Maguire actually did win MTV's best kiss award in 2003. He was watching an episode of the original Star Trek, a fight between Captain Kirk and a Gorn.

I don't remember if you've watched "School of Rock" yet, but if you haven't, you must. It showcases Jack Black at his finest, his acting, his comedic abilities, his infectious personality, and his musical skills, all without having to be subjected to his normal crudeness. And the child cast is utterly adorable and talented as hell in their own right.

Iron Man also came out in 2008, which I think is the *perfect* movie to show RDJ. The character he plays, Tony Stark, is somewhat close to how RDJ was - incredibly skilled but too much fame leading to drug/alcohol problems, who finds his way out. Also it's a GREAT place to start with superhero movies as it's the first Marvel/MCU movie! It's still one of my favourite movies that I love to see reactors react to! It also stands well on its own outside of the MCU! For Ben Stiller, I *really* hope you get to Zoolander at some point! Finally, I like that you talk about the research you do on a movie after you watch it, I do this too! I never used to, and didn't care about references or things I might have missed, and didn't have a lot of actor/movie knowledge, but eventually you build that up, and I feel like this movie is probably going to be a tipping point for you! Great reaction, please keep them coming!

17:03 "the insults just keep getting worse" 😂 sums it up pretty good. they were mocking hollywood and all the sequels, and greed. little did they know it got much, much worse, they were thinking a 400 mill return was crazy, now nothing but a billion will make them happy. another great reaction! 👍

It's a bizarre combination! It starts as a satire of the Hollywood system (actors and producers especially) and of Vietnam war movies -- and then becomes a big-budget war movie. One the few movies where the DVD commentary is essential.

Suggestions- so I'm not sure if these are on your list to watch or not as these are pretty well liked but I highly recommend these just in case- The Star Wars and Harry Potter franchises (fi you haven't seen them) The green mile Shawshank redemption Jurassic park. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind Anyway I think you have such a great personality and you going into these films with such a raw and open minded perspective is a joy to see ☺️

I was already well into my thirties in '08... so no, it wasn't my first RDJ movie. The cast was packed, and even the minor, throwaway characters had faces I recognized. I'm not a big fan of crude bathroom humor, but this movie delivers laughs on so-o-o many levels, I hardly noticed it. Really, one of the best made movies of the millennium.

The part with Ben Stiller running toward the chopper while getting shot up and raising his arms in the air is a parody of the Oliver Stone war movie “Platoon” starring Charlie Sheen. It’s easily one of the best war movies ever made and has a stellar ensemble cast. I highly recommend it. The song that plays during the opening and throughout parts of the movie is a song called “Adiagio for Strings” by Samuel Barber. I challenge you to listen to that song and not cry.

Adrien Brody sold his stuff for The Pianist (2022), he won an Oscar for that film. Leonardo DiCaprio eating the raw meat was the The Revenant (2015), he also won an Oscar for his performance in that film. Jack Black's character was partially based on Chris Farley, a comedian who also had problems with drugs and alcohol, as well as his weight, which unfortunately led to his death when he was only 33 years old. He was a talented comedian, IMO, and he was the original voice of Shrek. He had recorderd 85 % of his dialog in the movie when he died. I recommened the documentary I am Chris Farley, if you're interested in knowing more about him-

Maybe you should sort the movies you react to (and analyze) by release date. That maybe would lighten up some... confusion. :) But yet, spot on analysis of the movie. And do not fear, I cant see much Reference to Saving Private Ryan in this movie. Much more so to: Platoon, Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter and Rambo 2. And hey: I am cool :)

Someone should have told you that this movie is a satire of several famous war movies. It's always hard to understand satires if you aren't yet familiar with the source material that it's trying to parody. Once you watch the original movies -- Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Rambo 2, Full Metal Jacket, Mission Impossible 3, Predator (which you got with the chopper line), two of which are on the AFI list of all-time best movies (Apocalypse Now and Platoon)-- you'll recognize where a lot of the scenes in this movie came from and why they're funny.
