I remember being 12 and having an 8 and 12 feet long whips. I was only 5 foot 1 and I could still crack the 12 footer alright, but it was definitely harder to control and I hit my leg so many times.

I would guess it would depend on whether your are cracking for performance or for working. The cracking techniques are slightly different. Not to mention, everyone has their own way of getting one to crack.
