Really great instruction. So many tutorials do nothing but show perfect cracks, but you guys really break it down and show common mistakes, too. Excellent video!

You two ladies are excellent teachers. I don't know how many cracks you two know? However I do believe people would buy your DVD on whip Cracking basics. Your voice is excellent for narrations. And your performer is so graceful and animated. Keep up the good work.

I watched this a few times and finally got it right with the thumb technique and not over the shoulder. My dad tried to teach me this and other technique's using his whip a few times but I think I got it right now!. Thanks for the video

Excellent tute! One suggestion I have is that you might do one on whips themselves, i.e., how to use a 6 ft whip, what is the best length for a young novice teen, grades of leather used, and what to buy for a beginner who doesn't want to invest $100+ on a whip--yet.

Impressive, very informative tutorials. I am a rookie whip enthusiast. I had difficulty with this crack until I viewed your video. My skills have improved immensely from your detailed videos. Thank you! I am most curious where, and who trained you. Care to share that info? Have you considered a career in teaching? Whether you know it or not, you are an awesome teacher! Thanks for your tutorials!Again, would love to know where/who received your instruction. Kudo's!

You are AWESOME. Great tutorial. I have an 8' 12 plait kangaroo bullwhip which I've been using for decoration since getting frustrated trying to crack it. This video is so clearly explained and demonstrated that I went out and cracked like this the first try! Not the 2nd or 3rd try... but now I'm getting it and I understand it Thanks To You! April, is that you in the video and voice over?

My whip has a natural arc in it (kind of rigid in a particular direction for a bit past the handle) whereas this one seems a bit more fluid. Any advice on how the arc should be placed for this?
@AprilJenniferChoi9 жыл бұрын
+Maya Sears the arc should be placed such that it follows the arc of the loop you are making. In this case it should want to point up toward your thumb. Happy Cracking! :)

I believe April Jennifer Choi might in some respects have revised her view of how the overhand flick is executed in the light of the SmarterEveryDay movie she collaborated on. Her directions include that the tip of the whip should never rise above the shoulder and also that the whip-hand be dropped half-way through the movement and raised again towards the end. As regards the former direction, my eye is not quick enough to follow the movement of the tip of the whip and as regards the latter direction I could never see that April does make that down-and-up movement with her whip-hand. In the SmarterEveryDay movie referred to above it is clear that the whip's tip flies *much* higher than the shoulder behind the whipster and is pulled down as it comes forward. It isn't drawn forward more or less horizontally, over a momentarily lowered whip-hand. That forward movement would appear to be quite complex, incorporating forward and downward components that have to be timed just right. Possibly data collected in the course of making the SmarterEveryDay movie could be analysed with the objective of learning what is *really* essential to success at the overhand flick?

From other videos I learned that there are two versions of this crack: The version shown here is the much much more difficult one also called forward flick or forward vertical, where the end of the whip never crosses an imaginary horizontal plane above the head. The other version of this crack is the one in the smarter every day video where you swing the behind you, wait half a second and then throw it forward. This is easier as it almost has a built-in crack guarantee once you have figured it out. But it has precision and is also suitable for target work, it’s just not that elegant.

I've been whip cracking for about three years now, but I've never been able to do a flick. I'm assuming it's because my whip is simply too short (it's a six footer, with me being 6'4) am I right in thinking that?
@AprilJenniferChoi7 жыл бұрын
It's definitely more difficult with shorter whips, but you can do with with a 3 footer. It takes a very straight line though. 95% of the time when people are having difficulty, it's because they pivot at the wrist and pop the whip up rather than keep a straight line with the nose of the whip. I like takeing a target stand and have the student follow the path of the arms of the tarket stand with their whip. After about 5 min, they get flicks down. Try it, I hope it helps. :)

@johnross19475 жыл бұрын
Heavy coat, shoes and a full face helmet when your learning. That's the one fault of their videos. No safety first. Also the lenght of the whip plus your arm length and a little more. That is the measurement you need for a safety circle around you. Example, 6 foot whip plus 3 foot arm equals 9 feet add 1 more foot at least gives you a minimum 10 foot circle around you. No one goes near let alone enters that circle while the whip is in use.

@Whip Basics I've been trying this as well, but I don't think form is my problem? I think my whip is just too short for me to do it correctly (it's a six footer with me being 6'4) would I be right in thinking that? I've gotten on my knees and tried the motions and it seemed like it would work. I never actually tried cracking it while on my knees though, with my luck that's the time I'd seriously injure myself
