That engine definitively has a bit of buildup inside (maybe a previous owner neglected it a bit?), and the Valvoline HM Syn oil has a really good detergent package, looks like it is cleaning up that engine real good. I would reduce the change interval a bit for the next 2 or 3 oil changes, give it a change to break down all that buildup without clogging the filter too much.
@GainingDespair6 ай бұрын
Detergents in motor oil prevent build up, they don't really clean pre-existing deposits. The motor is direct injected, they suffer from bad fuel dilution, which creates a lot of deposits.

A good looking filter with most of my preferred features - silicone/silicone/coil spring.
@donwyoming19366 ай бұрын
The funny thing is that most car manufacturers recommend the flat, sheet metal springs. They stop the filter core from tilting. Coil springs are considered inferior.
@jeffkortsch82766 ай бұрын
@@donwyoming1936 The current filter from the dealer has a coil spring and the two previous ones had a stamped metal retainer spring. Apparently Subaru didn’t sign on to that. How would the filter media tilt when there is maybe a millimeter of space between the endcaps and the can?

With that construction quality and the plus of the silicone O-ring, this could be the perfect filter if they offered a version with a fully synthetic media.

My son bought a used, newer car with very high mileage and sludge. Lots of sludge. Ran Lucas synthetic 5W20 for 2k miles. Didn't budge the sludge. Dealer changed the oil with Valvoline high mileage 5W30. Didn't budge the sludge in 2500 miles. I changed it with Quaker State 10W30 dino oil. In 1000 miles, the sludge is cleaned out. And... I've been using these for the last couple years based off of the cut open inspection videos on this channel. Recently though, I noticed at my local O'Reilly's has been carrying new stock of these MicroGard Selects with a China origin, instead of Vietnam. They also appear to have changed to a cheaper O-ring material (appears to be a colored nitrile akin to what Purolator has). I can't say for sure what other changes were made without cutting it open, but I'll be sure to check when I've completed my OCI. I had installed the last one without realizing that it was this new design and I believe I'm having a little more start up rattle, although that could just be in my head. Either way, I bought the last 3 filters they had with the old design, made in Vietnam. Hopefully, there'll be a good alternative after I use those up.

Indeed. That is the risk of running high efficiency oil filters that filter down to 20-23 microns at 99% while also running 100% synthetic oil that can last over 5k miles. By the time you get to 4k miles that filter is likely clogged and you are now bypassing the filter media. The oil is still fine, but your filter is clogged. The Oil Geek recently did a live stream where this was discussed. Interesting topic for sure. As you mentioned change your oil/filter earlier.

The soot/sludge found inside this filter is quite normal for 6,000 miles of usage. You may not see it on a less restrictive filter. This appears to be a quality made filter and likely has a higher grade media that filters out a bit more than an average filter. Some folks think that these filters should be all squeaky clean inside, which is not a bad thing but it is also not a bad thing to see a bit of debris caught by the filter. The filter would not be necessary if it did not absorb and remove anything from the oil. Think about it!

That appears to be a quality filter. The sludge/carbon/soot looks quite normal for a high rate filter that has been in service for 6,000 miles. No excess glue is nice, since some filters have glue junk on the metal ends that could get sucked through the bypass valve. This appears similar or the same as the Pentius PLXL7317, which fits a lot of Japanese engines, especially almost all Honda/Acura ones. Pentius is made in Korea, MIcroGard in Vietnam, and looks like both use basic Premium Guard brand parts, popular set-up for Asian factories it appears. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4HHmYuZndWLkM0 for a Chinese factory making very similar oil filters.

You measure the paper thickness incorrectly. You may want to change you technique when you do this. Measure 5 pleats (10 layers) at the same time and apply some force to make sure you measure the paper and not the air between the pleats. The result divide by 10 and you will get the correct number which is going to be around 0.4 mm +/- 0.1 mm. Not 0.9 mm or 0.6 mm. Those are totally wrong numbers.
