So the bottom line is they are fairly equal quality filters. Both are rated for 20,000 miles, but anyone concerned with the health of their engine is changing the filter every 5,000 miles, so there should be no difference in performance between the two. For half the cost, the SuperTech is the clear win.

One made in USA for Mobil but didn't mention where Supertech was made. So if made in China, that would explain 1/2 the cost. A US company may own the name, but doesn't mean they are made in US.

As of 2023 that 5k is too long of an interval it is better to drop back down to 3500 or so because Direct Injection high pressure fuel pumps are good at diluting the oil especially for people that have short commutes and not much hwy time to burn off the excess fuel being introduced. Before Turbos and Direct injection 5k was perfectly fine and probably still is, but the longer these new engines are out they have learned a lot from them. My wife's 2020 Camry SE uses OW-16W and I do it every 5k, but after seeing what is happening with Honda accords right now with oil dilution I think I am going to shorten her intervals because she has a short commute. Now the Camry does not have Turbos and it does not have the carboning up issues because it has both Direct and Port injection systems. Seriosly if you own a Turbo charged engine with Direct injection shorter intervals are in your best interest:P

When looking at filtration you want to look at the total surface area of tbe filtering mat (in this case) micron rating, length, heigth, width, and thickness. Proper flow thru the rilter is the name of the game. You can put them on a test bench and pump oil thru them and test pressure and volumes per second as the oil flows thru them. You could also add contaminants to test the clogging resistance if you can.

LOL. The filter companies can't fool anyone anymore. They must know they're being watched. I see Fram has cleaned up their act quite a bit. Champion Labs has had the whistle blown on them too. BTW, I have used Wal-Mart Super-Tech motor oil in my cars for years. Buy it by the pail and use a pump to fill the car. Sold my last car with 475,000km (294,000mi), oil change every 10,000km (6200mi) and none of them ever burnt an ounce of oil. Used Wix filters.

Thanks for the detailed analysis. I would go for the supertech filter changing it at about every 3,000 miles. I would not stretch it to 5,000 miles or more as recommended by the auto manufacturers. Automatic transmission fluid should be never changed in 2007 Toyotas? Worse for me is seeing the recommended automatic transmission changing requirement. My 2007 Toyota Corolla matrix recommends never changing the automatic transmission fluid. I did drain my automatic transmission fluid with my filter at about 5 quarts. I did locate and buy the required Toyota IV transmission fluid. I measured the fluid removed and replace the same amount. I did this at about 150,000 miles. The worse was the drained 5 quarts of fluid was solid black with no red color. The original Toyota IV fluid is a red color. The removed old fluid was black. Once the new 5 quarts of new fluid was added, the dip stick fluid was black with lots of red also. I repeated the transmission fluid 5 quart with filter replacement at about 200,000 miles. This time the dipstick fluid after was mostly red with a little black in the fluid. I can see why Toyota wants owners to never change the automatic transmission fluid. They can sell you another new Toyota after about 200,000 miles because the transmission has failed.

Keep the oil changed and even the fram orange can works fine. Mine easily go 300K. Only now that i dont have salt and rust will the body last long enough. Any money the transmissions will let go and the engine still runs like new.

@@AmandaHugenkiss2915 Try draining off enough fluid to accept at LEAST two (2) full bottle worth of Lucas Transmission fix (it's like STP for automatic transmission). It helped mine as far as the banging noise at shifting but unfortunately the gear set is damaged so I had to park it. I'm thinking you might need 3 bottles. If the seals are hardened, there's another product that is said to be magic on old hard seals. AT-205 Re Seal. Maybe try the re seal first, and if that doesn't work, then the Lucas. I know the Lucas won't help tired hard rubber. It just makes the fluid a little thicker. After the 2 bottle worth in my small transmission, you can't tell. It looked the same as before and drips easy. It just "feels" a little more like "oil" than before. Regardless the thing will eventually be too difficult to live with and need replacing. Been there before and it's a bunch of work yourself and expensive if you hire a shop.

These cutaway videos are a valuable source. I've been changing my oil for a while, never thought much about the construction of the oil filter or even much into the specific type of oil I've been buying. The Mobil 1 and Super Tech filter here are very similar, unfortunately the maximum protection filter wasn't at my store for my car so I went with the Mobil 1. Super Tech maximum protection is a good alternative. The Superior protection one however is similar to FRAM extra guard.. which is cheaply made.

Checked the flow test on another video. The filtering capacity between these two was the real difference. The Mobil 1 was able to filter out a significantly more amount of contaminants without sacrificing flow rate or pressure. The design of the M1 filter also trapped the contaminants in the filter media (where it's supposed to) versus getting stuck between the cap and seal, which will alter the flow path and either send through bypass or stop flow into the filter all together.

Looking over one of your other videos, I would like to see some way of seeing the amount of debris in the threads. Some filters do appear to have quite a bit from what I presume is the thread cutting process. Also consider that the threads are post filtration so any metal debris is heading straight to the engine. Perhaps once cut open you could screw a post into the filter over a white paper and see if any debris gets knocked loose.
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher Жыл бұрын
Some filters may have some debris some may not, the best thing I can suggest is that before purchasing shake your filter and do a visual inspection. Clean the threads with a white tissue or cloth. Unless you run into a bad batch, 99% of the time the filters are fine.

I would not use a filter with a dented can. If it compromised and you end up with a leak or worse, a rupture, you’re really kinda screwed. Why take the chance? Both are nice filters I’d gladly use either. I like that neither of them went crazy with the glue (can you tell that is a pet peeve of mine) and use quality materials. My biggest problem with the supertech is that it is exclusively sold by Walmart. The Walmarts down here are bigger than some suburban shopping malls and twice as crowded. The louvers on the M1 are fine. And, there's always significantly more louver openings than holes in a center tube. Always. If Whip shined a light source over the outlet opening it would prove those two points. Thank You, Frankie!👍 As for your question, sorry I dont know. I dont have the necessary equipment to test them.
@SlikLizrd
@SlikLizrd Жыл бұрын
Not to worry, Frankie -- Modern oil filters are strategically engineered for best Cost-Per-Dollar filtering -- and they avoid internal restrictions as a matter of course. 1. Number and size of holes in Base Plates has increased. 2. Center Tubes have more holes and/or louvers. 3. Bulky Wire Screens eliminated, more room for pleats. Flow Testing by individuals is not gonna happen -- necessary equipment is too expensive, and the cost of training involved to operate the equipment and interpret the findings is prohibitive. I'm more concerned with Micron Ratings, and quality oil filters put their Micron Ratings ON THE BOX.

The Super Tech seems fine for the price, but I would never run a 20k mile oil change like that. These filters would most likely be "ok" for a 10k interval. But by that I mean change the oil every 5k and the filter every 10k.

The small diff in filter media area isn’t an issue at 3/4K mile oil changers,but a fairly dirty motor or tired motor with blowby contaminating the oil with carbon particles getting past worn rings during combustion could be an issue at the long advertised 20k mile oil & filter change interval possibly putting filter into dreaded bypass mode.

Good review, oil filters are relative cheap for most cars, so I stick to Mann or Purflux. No need to go cheaper or dealer, I don't feel like opening oil filters to see if they are good. Above brands are known to be OE suppliers for European cars and OEM for Euro market Japanese cars. I replace the oil filter halfway the oil change cycle anyway. My oil cycle (diesel) is also lower than the book says (15000km instead of 20000km) and I have a big sump of 6 liters for 2.2l engine so oil does not get diluted or contaminated as quickly as newest cars with smaller sumps.
