These are definitely better than similar ones at auto parts stores, Homedepot and Lowes with less bite. I'm getting a set today. If they don't work, I'll get the spiral design bite ones that take out completely round nuts. I used a single spiral extractor to remove wheel "lock" lug nuts on each wheel on a used truck I bought. The problem with the spiral kind is removing the bolt or nut since they really dig in.

I have a stripped 5mm hex nut/screw. Do I use a 5mm Extractor? Or is the extractor size based on the bolt head circumference? Tks!
@WhipCityWrencher Жыл бұрын
Hi John, It all depends on how stripped it is and how much metal is missing from the top of the bolt head. It's best to use the size that will barely start to fit, then tap/pound it on the rest of the way with a hammer so that it fits on real tight. Let me know how it turns out.

Nice test. I'm having trouble with my stuck 14mm oil pan plug. It doesn't seem to be completely stripped - yet; I can get the ratchet on it, but the plug won't budge an inch (or a mm!). I sprayed some WD40 on it and waited about 10 minutes. Do you think I should use more and wait longer? I've come across suggestions that say wait several hours.
@WhipCityWrencher4 жыл бұрын
I'd spray it up good wait a hour or so and if you can still get a regular socket on it instead of cranking on it by hand, hit the ratchet with a hammer giving it small blows it may break it loose. If it's totally rounded off you may try a chisel on the side of the bolt with small blows. I don't know car ? If it has an cast aluminum oil pan be careful as not to crack it. Have a new drain plug bolt ready. Also slightly tapping the head of the bolt may shock it and come off easier. Good Luck!

Did you use a 14 mm extractor on your video or did you use SAE size? I'm having trouble with a tensioner bolt on a honda B-20 engine in a 1997 CRV and they went crazy with the torquing of these bolts, whoever did this job the last time.. The dewalt set didn't work on the last shoulder bolt holding the plastic belt cover so I got my dremel and cut around the plastic ear to get the cover off. There is absolutely no working room on the front of this engine to hammer anything on the tensioner. The bolt isn't mangled, but it is rounded, and I used a 6 point socket when I tried to breAk it.
@WhipCityWrencher4 жыл бұрын
Hi sorry to hear about your problem. The video was made over 9 months ago, and I don't really remember what size it was for sure, but it was metric because that's the only set I bought so far. Most every bolt you run into is going to be metric. Try the one that goes on the tightest that's about all I can tell you. I know if there's not much room it doesn't work as well. Sometimes hitting the head will shock it and help get it loose. Without seeing the bolt I can't give you much advice, but if it's safe to do so some heat with a small torch may help or spraying it up real good with some penetrating fluid every once and awhile and let it sit for a day can't hurt. Good Luck! and Let me know how you make out.

Whip City Wrencher I’m going to Get the set from Harbor Freight if I may just get the Husky version at Home Depot because HF is almost.a 2 he round trip from my house. The husky set is in stock and has a 14 mm and a 13 mm in the set. I’ve already soaked it with PB Blaster and will give it another shot before bed. Thanks for getting back with me and I’ll let u know how it turns out. Several bolts are missing on the front of the motor, including one of the motor mount bracket bolts and the main alternator bolt. Shame on whoever did the timing belt the last time.

Hate that overtightened shit. These dicks sometimes use lock tight too.
@plumkey1973 жыл бұрын
@@redtobertshateshandles Well, Honda bolts suck to begin with, because of their tendency to Round off. The tensioner bolt on this vehicle had already been rounded some by the previous owner or his mechanic. I had to end up getting my angle grinder and Dremel to cut a couple of places where I could use my air hammer with the chisel tip to break the Loctite. This was a grade 8 bolt and took a lot of grinding To cut a couple of slits. The replacement bolt was $12 and some change at the Honda dealership. The prior owner also had Loctite on the plastic timing cover and I had to spend more time than I would’ve liked to get those bolts loose. The dude at the parts desk at Honda dealership gave me a handful of those shoulder bolts That they had in the shop. I don’t really use Loctite very often on engine parts, especially when they’re torqued down to spec, and then the rare instance that I do, I use the medium grip so that it comes apart without rounding anything. Either that or just a simple lock washer. 40 years of working on vehicles and I’ve never had any bolts back out on any jobs I’ve done - And I wanna keep it that way.
