Really nice job with the tribute, this masterpiece doesn't get the amount of recognition as much as it deserves.

love the cut at 0:33 when Fletcher starts the sentence by saying 'now' and Andrew continues it with his break-up monologue, pushing the fact that Andrew is becoming what Fletcher wanted him to be.

I became immediately hooked onto this film just by watching the dinner table and breakup scene. No doubt I will watch this film again, again and again. I cannot believe how little recognition this film has and how deep it really is philosophically; almost to the point where it is a philosophical story. No one ever got great at anything by settling. No one ever got great at something without sacrificing something else. No one said being great would ever come easy. Pain is unavoidable, so you either go through the short-term pain of bleeding from constantly hitting the drums or the long-term pain of not reaching your potential, not being as great as you could have been and being forgotten. That's everyone's choice in life, which pain would you prefer? What if Einstein never studied? What if Isaac Newton never tried in physics, what if Shakespeare couldn't be bothered to read or stay up writing his new play? Where would we be? The only way man ever became great is by separating himself from the crowded mass. "Man cannot remake himself without suffering for he is both the marble and the sculptor."

Extremely well written. Normally you'd add something or make an observation but this is so pure and perfect. Fascinating.

i think it's also important though to understand just how much andrew sacrifices to do this. it's worth asking - is his obsession healthy? or is he consumed by his desire to be known, to be great, to the point of his own destruction? The ending is rather tragic imo - through pursuing his singular goal of greatness he steadily sacrifices the parts of his life that keep him human, until he becomes at the end just a tool for Fletcher to wield. He's dehumanized... a machine that's really fucking good at drums and bad at the things that matter. It's the people in his life that he sacrifices to get there - the tradeoffs he makes are what makes the ending of the film so tragic.

@@EvangelosAlvarenga how am i close minded? It’s hard to tell the tone of my voice via text. But im genuinely curious on other perspectives. The way i see it is that Neiman is obsessed with impressing his manipulative teacher. He ruined his relationship to be “one of the greats”. This to me is sad and not something that I would want anyone to aspire to be.
@ZerosGuitar11 ай бұрын
@@Shark97281its obvious that he hates fletcher and wasn't looking to impress him but got obsessed with the road to greatness. Also it's a matter or perspective whether you'd want to abandon your own craft for a relationship. If your partner understands you and stays with you then you've found your real partner. otherwise if they're mad that you're obsessed with something healthy like that then no.
@Shark9728111 ай бұрын
@@ZerosGuitar you are right about a few things. He seems more obsessed with being great than fletcher. But in his mind, fletcher is the key to greatness. And hear me out. In the scene where Neiman breaks up with his girlfriend, he ASSUMES that she will be unsupportive instead of talking to her about how important this is for him and needs her support. Edit: Neiman’s obsession with being great is NOT healthy. His hands bled, he got into a car accident, he’s being physically and mentally assaulted by his teacher. None of this is ok.

People will never realize what makes this movie motivational, indeed Fletcher is toxic, it's kind of tragic but they don't look at what had to be done, not caring about circumstances like being late or replaced, just focusing on achieving, just focusing on your art, people can cut just this part to take it as an example of what mindset you sometimes will need, but of course, you don't want to kill yourself in the process or let a mentor treat you like that, of course not, but people will always see the superficial, the black and white, never the gray

I don't think that's the correct interpretation. I don't think fletcher was at all attempting to improve Neiman when he played the wrong song in JVC and he only pretended to encourage him at the end when he thought it benefitted him. The fathers look at the end says it all this is far from a victory he really lost his son.
