The way this one hit was just different. Slogging through the sewers to fight a super mutant, and then making your escape from a literal shithole across the bay to Neo Zeed's territory on a fucking jet board. Every next step is more frightening, more taxing than the previous. The Super Shinobi is a timeless work of art.

The franchise started earlier yes, but this game and this soundtrack was not possible in ‘88. The hardware was there, but developers had not unlocked its full potential yet. Much like early NES games vs end of life NES games.

@@whalahiguy It didn't take the Japanese devs much time to start pushing the Genesis audio hardware with games like Revenge of Shinobi, MUSHA, Batman, etc. The hardware was very similar to the arcade boards and the PC88 computers that they were used to.The biggest limitation back then was probably the ROM price, limiting most games to measly 4 Mbit.
