Whisker Seeker Catfish Rods GFX Vs FMJ (What's The Difference)

Since we initially released my Chad Ferguson Signature Series Catfish Rods we’ve made a number of changes over the years and in 2019 we added the FMJ rods to the Whisker Seeker Tackle rod line so the rod is now available in the GFX and FMJ models.
This is one area I get tons of questions about, what’s the difference between the GFX and FMJ rods?
GFX stands for “Graphite Series” and FMJ stands for Full Metal Jacket.

I`ve used the same rod for 30 years and was interested in checking out the 9`6 rods at the Catfish Conference. I was very impressed with the quality and feel of the rods and picked up 2, after putting some reels on them doing some casting out back I was hooked ! ! I will be ordering more 9`6`s and 7`6`s and going full Whisker Seeker ! !

I have 4 of the older rods and 10 BCF rods I like the whisker seekers better they are lighter and the seat seems to hold the reel better. Maybe 1 day I can afford to buy some more thanks for sharing this info

I use 6000 penn fierce III spinning reels and have read older post about the seat not fitting great. I need to know if the seat on either one of these is better for this reel. Any info from someone that has ever paired them together would be appreciated.

We’ve redesigned the reel seats since then. I’m not familiar with that reel but all standard size catfish reels will fit.

What do you think about the new catfish pro reel that abu garcia is releasing? As I understand it, it's just a pro rocket 6500 CS BE with a fancy paint job and the letters C3 instead of CS. Since it is identical in design and performance to the pro rocket, which do you prefer, the 6500 c3 or the 6500 pro rocket? How does the pro rocket pair with the 9'6" heavy action FMJ? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I use the Pro Rocket. I’ve not had my hands on the final production model of the Catfish Pro but the one I did use was very similar to the Pro Rocket BE

I'm having trouble finding a spinning reel that fits into the reel seat being only 2 1/2" opened all the way. (9'6" heavy gfx)

I thought the ild rods had aluminum oxide inserts? In my opinion old rods look and feel better. All that steel replacement added a lot of weight with 0 benefit. I know people who buy the steel hardware think they need it but they dont.

Ya and the fmj you loose the bottom finger control. Just opened package and was very disappointed. I would have ordered the other to have the finger. It doesn't even show decent pictures on website to show its missing on the fmj

If you want to swap it out call the office and they’ll help you. There’s no way to have a trigger with a metal reel seat.

Just wish it was mentioned in the video. It was said only difference was basically metal or graphite. I am developing arthritis and its becoming hard to handle a rod anymore , this weekend we are leaving for probably my last fishing camp trip with my son so no time to trade it in. They are still very nice rods . I just wish the site mentioned this and had pictures of this. There is just 2 pictures and neither show the whole rod. Just warranty ( in a picture) odd.
