Totally agree, guys. I’m a fan of the single barrels and the Sinatra, but the Bonded is just a daily sipper, at best. The scoring reminds me of the Jim Murray 2016 whisky of the year CR Northern Harvest Rye - also an easy sipping whisky but not a standout. Oh, and don’t get me started on the score for the Dewars 12 😂

Great video gents! As more whisky information becomes readily available online, it will be easier for people to become more educated about whichever alcoholic beverages they are buying. Eventually, dinosaurs like Whisky Advocate, Jim Murray, World Whiskies Awards etc are going to become less relevant. The OSWAs are where it's at for whisky enthusiasts. Side note: it makes you wonder what level of quality was Jack Daniel's in Frank Sinatra's day? LMAO at that LCBO picture, I remember when Jeremy first showed me and almost couldn't believe it. Any cornerstone in the USA could have a better selection than that.

You just need to review these 'best' whiskies in a 'Canadian' fashion.. "Sorry, it sucks". I also immediately thought of Jim Murray's Northern Harvest pick for #1... and I still didn't bother going out to try it - because at the end of the day, it's Crown Royal, lol. Same way I feel about JD - I know I can't possibly be missing out all that much (and most likely, dodging a bullet). Not gonna lie though, I did like Glenmorangie 10 and Glenlivet 12 early on; just wouldn't go restock. Maybe that can be a review category, 'worth restocking/rebuying or one and done'.

Rob, Jeremy, NOW you're hittn' it outta the park! LOVE Lagavulin, I have only ever had the Anny.8 years, and it's candy in a glass covered/w cigar ash. I need 2 try the 16 as it's supposed 2 be iconic Scotch, is it decent juice @ 43% ? Ardbeg and others benefit from almost Cask 💪 strength? 🤙🤔🥃🍸

Lagavulin is great, but it is a Diageo owned distillery and therefore chill-filtered, ABV on the low side, and uses artificial coloring (The Special Releases are non-chill filtered and cask strength). It’s a great starter Islay Scotch but there’s FAR better Islays out there if you are looking for something a bit better, imo

@@richardbarrick1492 Port Charlotte is definitely one! I’m also a huge fan of Kilchoman (my personal favorites I think) and Caol Ila 12 is another good one. Lagavulin is good, I just wish the 16 was more of an integrity bottling.

@@richardbarrick1492 Finally got to try Longrow, it's basically Lagavulin but better. A sweet peaty dram with some of that Camplbeltown funk and an integrity bottling (46%, non-chill filtered, no coloring added) and AMAZING! Kilkerran Heavily Peated is another delicious Campbeltown Peat bomb

Amazing & fun rant, guys...I went recently to a tasting in which the "producer" (hem the whisky was sourced apparently) was proudly showing & telling every visitor on its stand that his whisky won a 98/100 in an international competition...(the competition name already did indicate me how unreliable it was...). I did taste the whisky & found it nice, but would never consider its worth more than a 85 or so in a good day...and I used to be a tad too generous in scores in my begining of reviewing but nowadays I tend to drop scores to focus rather on comment (...). I've seen several times those whiskies listed for this magazine subtitled "America's Leading Whisky Magazine" & never took it seriously...(...). There would be a lot of others things to say about what is said there, but its way too late for me & would be too long, Cheers & Happy Christmas to both of you !

FYI bottled in bond is not just Bourbon, it's Rye, AppleJack, Corn Whiskey also. There's even a Rum bottled in bond because they meet the requirements to be in a bonded warehouse. The US Government has specific rules for it to be Bottled in Bond and it's not just a tax stamp. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottled_in_bond I agree with your feedback on JD BiB.

the beer scene in Ontario is good. I like Unibroue stuff like the yearly vintage Christmas spiced quad they make for Trader Joe's and the price is very good

I begrudgingly bought this after seeing it on a second top list. It did not disappoint, in that it was exactly as disappointing as I expected it to be. Btw, not sure about Canada but here I see it in liter bottles, not 750ml. That makes it $34.50 per 750. Much more reasonable but still better stuff at that price point.

This is a very funny and shocking review and rating but I will say one of my favorite bourbons after ECBP is Jack Daniels Barrel Proof. Great taste for a great price!

Heaven Hill sells a bonded brandy under the Christian Bros label, appropriately named, "Sacred Bond". Of course you must be familiar with Rittenhouse bottled-in-bond Rye whiskey. There's also the infamous Mellow Corn corn whiskey, also from Heaven Hill which is a bonded whiskey as well. So no, many liquors can be bottled-in-bond, not just bourbon.

Over the last 25 years or so, I have worked for several publishers (print and online) as an advertising and sponsorship sales guy. In all that time, I have never seen editors make decisions on awards based on the amount of money a brand spends with them. I mean, I wish they would, id make more commission, but it just doesnt happen. If it came out that they had done, the editor's integrity would be shot and career over. The damage to the publication and the relationships they have with other advertisers would be irreparable.I don't doubt this is a strange call, but I'd suggest looking for another motivation for it.

Great rant. Rye of course, also has many bottled in bond releases. Finished Bourbons fall under the misleading label department of Bourbon "finished in XXXX", which is a true statement but technically no longer a Bourbon as we all know. FWIW, I liked Triple Mash more than Bonded as "value" whiskies go.

They use bonded for ryes too so it's not exclusively a bourbon term. Their distiller in interviews has said it can be called bourbon. So JD isn't as adamant about the Tennessee whiskey term so much as the hardcore fans in my opinion.

Fully agree with you about American bottles. What we can get here is just not worth the time or the bother. I have a decent amount of American (13 bottles of an 100ish bottle collection) and I can say only 3 maybe 4 I would give more than 85, and keep buying. Rare breed, eagle rare 10, stranahan original, eh taylor small batch and maybe wellers special reserve as an honorable mention. Uncle nearest, Buffalo trace, four roses, michters, nothing really cuts it for me. All the same flavours, right down the middle brown sugar, rye spice and oak. Everyone runs the same mash bill or close to the same. It's just all boring.

The only reason I saw Whisky Advocate is that several years ago when I was making my way through the Whisky that Total Wine has I ended up in the grand reserve rewards status. A subscription to it was a freebie. It's mostly just big well photographed adds for very common mediocre bottles. No value for us whatsoever. Cheers guy's

I worked in magazines for I et a decade. Get your reviews elsewhere; magazine bosses fear posting off the advertisers. The Select is the only Jack I’ll buy. I think it’s great, comparatively speaking. I recently put out a vid where I used the Select and an AB cask strength to make Old Fashioneds. I called the Jack ‘bourbon’ just yo be a brat.

Whisky Advocate gave JW Black a score of 91 earlier in 2022. They must be drinking a different batch to me, I had a sip of JW 12 about a month ago. Unrecognisable from what it was a few years ago, really poor quality now, in my opinion.
