I too work at a liquor store. Just last week I had a moment with a customer that's worth sharing. He was browsing our Scotch section which is right by the doorway to our store room. I took a moment to ask if I could help him find something and he replied, "Nah, I'm good.". Back to stocking I went. A couple of minutes later he had moved to Bourbon and was still slowly ambling along looking at bottles. Having let some time go between interactions I asked again if I could help. He just grinned and said no again, so I let it go and kept stocking. A couple minutes later as I was walking by he stopped me saying he actually did have a question. The question isn't important and truth be told I can't remember it. What's important is that it started a conversation. After talking for just a minute he looked a bit surprised and said, "Damn you DO know a bit about whiskey." Uhh Thanks? The only thing I can think is that to him I didn't "look" like someone that would have any knowledge about the topic. We talked for a good while after that and he left with a couple of bottles. I guess my point in this is that when you are out as a customer, don't assume that the nondescript appearance of the kid behind the counter means that they don't know anything, or that if you have a whisky question you need to seek out some old dude that could pass for Gandalf the Grey. Great whisky knowledge can come from anyone that appreciates whisky.

William Nash I hate that. My local had a tasting and I tried 2 whiskies and said I prefer one over the other as it reminded me of a separate islay. The older bloke said are tou even old enough to know the difference!! 😤 Anyways, I now don't get bothered when I go there as a regular, but every now and then, one staff person says sonething whisky related which makes my eye twitch.

Truth I've had older gents at the wiskey bar in my town crap on people's selection and be very biased which is fine but taking a moment to see what's in someone else's glass/heart you could always find something you didn't know you liked.

For me the thing with snobbery is sometimes hard to hold back. For example today I got into an argument with a co-worker (who part time works as a barkeeper) about alcohol in general. And for me it is alot about the experience of drinking and when and how you drink it. And for him it's just a way to get drunk. And I really had a hard time trying to explain to him why and how one could just enjoy and alcoholic beverage without the intention to get drunk.

One time I walked into a liquor store, knowing nothing about strong drink, just looking for special flavor to add to my cooking, and the only thing the store clerk could recommend was something with strawberry flavor. It was probably a bit confusing because I was asking for "Alcohol flavor" which of course doesn't exist, but I was totally ripe to be turned into a Whiskey Snob that very moment and the opportunity flew right over the clerk's head.

Dan, and or, Rex. How do you decipher the “marketing” jargon that’s on the bottle? what does it mean to be triple cask distilled or double cask. Or any of the things that are said on the bottle? Is it just to sell more bottles? I am somewhat new to whisky, and have discovered that the bulk of the whiskies I like are speysides (at the moment). I want to try Laphroaig and other styles as well. Do you recommend jumping in the deep end? Please help...

I did have someone argue that Ardbeg was an Irish Whiskey. I said no its a scotch but, the guy insisted on it being Irish. So I politely showed the label and explained why it's a scotch. He looked puzzled and accepted what I told him. But, if he kept insisting on it being an irish whiskey I think I would have just said ok your right it's Irish sorry!

I was working an event once where there was a side attraction of a whiskey tasting that the partygoers could pay a little extra to attend. The tasting was "hosted" by a pompous blowhard (who looked like a giant thumb with a face drawn on it) who talked about the Scotch tastings his bar offered. He pronounced Islay as "IS-lah" while tossing out "IS-lah" and Laphroiag as if they were two different things, and mentioned posting up Campbeltown Scotch as the 2 or 3 spot in a tasting flight of 5 (which is cool if you don't want to taste anything after your Springbank). I just kinda nodded and walked away after a minute or two because it was clear this guy wasn't going to be swayed, and while he wasn't directly the client at this event, I still had to keep the diplomacy going. I kinda want to check out his bar and see if it's any good and see if he's less of a dick on his home turf.

Was hosting a walk-up tasting in a store a few weeks back and got talking with a guy about distilling. He was already being rather adversarial, but then he asked about how many times distilled it was. I started to explain that we use a non-traditional column still, but he cut me off and went into this diatribe about how he took a science class in university and the instructor had said that you can only distill alcohol once and so anything that claims to be triple distilled, etc. etc. is total BS. I started to reply, but again, he cut me off and asked: "Well, after you do the first run, do you add sugar and yeast back into it before doing the next run? Because THAT is the only way to do a true second distillation. If you aren't doing that then it's BS." I just stood there, knowing he was so, so wrong, but also knowing there was no point in engaging further. Tried to say something polite but dismissive like, "I'm not sure that's how it works." and he walked (strutted) away.

@brettcloak-gentile91316 жыл бұрын
You're not broken, WT101 IS awesome. It might be that you like the higher proof stuff since Basil Hayden is 90 proof. I think Basil is the same mash bill as Old GrandDad (another Beam product) If you like the WT101 you should try Old Grand Dad Bonded (100 Proof) or Old Granddad 114 (114 proof)
@ronaldwalters94886 жыл бұрын
Brett Cloak-Gentile Funny thing is, I was always afraid to try the higher proof, I thought it would burn more than have flavor. Lesson here, don't be afraid to try new things I guess.
@brettcloak-gentile91316 жыл бұрын
Heck yeah- no fear! I feel like the main thing hindering my experimentation is cost but both of those bottles are affordable in my neck of the woods- OGD114 is 25$ and the Bottled in Bond version is under 20. AND if you find out that OGD 114 is your style and you want to get into a little higher price range the Wild Turkey Rare breed is fantastic. The current batch is 116.8 proof and I'm a big fan.
@nogoa426 жыл бұрын
I was a Beam guy for 25 years. Finally switched to Turkey because it had a better flavor profile. I tried Basil after that just because a good sale poped. It just tasted like more refined Jim Beam. I will stick to the Turkey for an everyday bourbon. Have yet to try GranDad.

Why would you bleep taint, it taint even a word. Anyway, I went to the movies one night with a bunch of friends. It was the re-release of The Exorcist. The directors cut. A family comes in with five 8-10 year-olds and sits right behind our group. Immediately they are acting like 8-10 year-olds waiting for a movie to start, kicking seats and being loud. So I start talking loudly with my buddy. I am just dropping F-bombs like a B-52 over Afghanistan. I'm slinging S that and B this and completely being that guy. My friend taps me on the shoulder and says, "Cool it, there are young kids behind us." I turn to him and say," We are here to see The Exorcist. There ain't Shit I could say that could hurt these kids that is not going to happen in the next 2 hours."
