** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

Great episode! I agree Rex, the name 'Powers' sounds budgety, especially if one doesn't realise it's a family name. But I've spent some time in Northern Ireland, and my first job in Austria (the Irish are everywhere) was waiting tables/bartending in an Irish pub, And, it's true that most Irish folk go for Powers over other baseline whiskeys. For me, it just has more going on, more beefy/oily, less thin, probably due to un-chill filtering at 43.2% (Gold Label), and spicier. It's still cheaper here at 20€ than Bushmills and Jameson.

(make sure you pour Rex a dram) I have been trying to decide how to submit my request for a review w/o it being multiple chapters because I have a lot I would like to say. I think the easiest way is to simply provide some cliff notes: -Recent enthusiast -First bottle was Talisker Storm due to having read good things about Talisker and also finding the Storm discounted to $32 -By the 3rd dram I loved it -Tried several since then including Bunna, Glendronach, Laphroaig, Ardbeg and Caol Ila -None struck me like the Storm so bought 2 more bottles of that -Thought Caol Ila would be the next step but after one dram I don’t love it yet -Prefer smokiness of the Storm to peatiness of the Caol Ila -After some research I have narrowed down my next bottle to one of the following mild to medium peated whiskys: Port Charlotte Scottish Barley, Benromach 10, Springbank 10, Kilchoman Machir Bay and Ledaig 10 Could you please do a side-by-side review of two of these if you have them? My favorite type of review is a side-by-side comparison of two similar whiskys and I would love to get your opinion on some of these. I have been binge watching your videos and I want to say thanks for the great content that you are creating for us viewers to enjoy! I am looking forward to much more!

I had an idea after the Bob Dylan episodes, the Caskmates Jameson episode, and after hearing about differently finished scotches. I’m thinking of getting a new barrel, aging tequila in it for a few months, then finishing a whiskey in the tequila barrel. Any suggestions for Phase 2? We (my mom, stepdad, and myself) barrel-mellowed Jim Beam in a barrel, then mellow-finished an Irish Whiskey , then mellow-finished more Beam and all 3 phases were DELICIOUS.

0-100 is a faulty scale, as almost everything falls between 70 and 90. I see this especially with cigars. It's effectively a 20-25 point scale. The problem is that a score of 80 looks great, but it's probably a below-average cigar/whiskey. This is a generality of course, but it seems to be pretty common.
@JimmyLeg
@JimmyLeg 6 жыл бұрын
Serge uses it at whiskyfun.com but he does explain that generally a 75 is an average malt/good blend. Admittedly most whisky's fall between 75 and 90 but there are plenty of examples above and waaay below so I find it useful at his site. Also there *should be* very few professionally made and aged whisky's released to the public that are actually awful. That's just bad business.
@AdamPFarnsworth
@AdamPFarnsworth 6 жыл бұрын
Sure, it's a at least some sort of scale to help people find something they like, but if 0-50 are *never* used, then all scores are inflated. 50 should be the average score, not 75.
@reimumeiling
@reimumeiling 6 жыл бұрын
I've found that pretty much all rating systems are a 5 point scale. 10 point scales pretty much only use 6-10. 100 point scales are just 10 point scales x10.

I blame it on the way we grade in public schools. 70 to 79 is a C, which we are told is average, so most of us tend to grade things similarly in our adult lives. But really it could just be the system that movies use. 1 star is basically a don't bother, 2 is a fair effort, but most probably won't like it, 3 is a good one, and 4 is amazing! On that system, mostly 3s makes sense (and it breaks down to a 75% average!) I like 5 point systems myself... with a decimal to help differentiate finer nuances. It makes 3 points or gold stars or smiley poops 💩... Whatever the system... a natural average score. Like a bell curve... 3 is the majority followed by fewer 4s and 2s, followed by even fewer 5s and 1s. But people seem to like an arbitrary 100... Even though we grade by A B C D F with C being average. It's the same bell curve, but skewed up to bigger numbers! Sorry for turning into a rant...

Since starting to watch your channel over a year ago I've gone off the deep end in scotch and bourbon--I have come to love Islay malts, particularly Laphroaig, and have a great enthusiasm for high-rye bourbons. The one nut I haven't cracked yet is Irish whiskey, and I think this is because so far I've only tried out budget bottles like Tullamore DEW and Bushmills Red Label. Do you have any recommendations for a good, more, err, "fully flavored" Irish whiskey in the $30 to $45 range?

Daniel, can you please explain NAS. Is there a minimal requirement for Irish, scotch and other whiskeys?
@onggia850
@onggia850 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not Daniel but I think I can answer. Even without an age statement: Scotch, Irish, Canadian must at least 3 years old. Bourbon must be at least 2 years old to be labeled straight bourbon, but age must be stated if it's both under 4 years old and labeled straight bourbon. There are no rules for Japanese whisky.

DO NOT watch this episode with headphones on past 8:49. If you do, please turn down the volume, otherwise you will be subjected to full blast Rex at volume 11 trying to meld the Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston versions of I Will Always Love You into one unholy rendition that will hurt until tomorrow's episode.
