My grandparents' cure for just about anything was a "tea magnificent". That was basically a hot toddy made with black tea (usually Tetley's or Lipton's) and whiskey, which was usually Seagram's 7 in their house. You drank that just before bed. After that, you had to get under a _perina_ (basically a down comforter that weighed about 20 lbs) and sweat all night. In the morning you were supposed to feel better. And what do you know, the first time I tried it in their house, it worked. Well. That was the complete cure, anyway. If you just felt a little under the weather, that was good enough excuse for a tea magnificent.

Haha that's a funny thing it's probably of Slavic origin. In Czech we call it peřina - nowadays its basically typical blanket which you have in bed (not the super stuffed one). Elderly or people or people from villages still have them since they last for very long if they are cared for. The word probably originates from peří which means feathers as that was most commonly used as a filling in classic peřinas.

I just did this with bullet rye, it's subtle but it does add a nice herbal resiny smoke note, not peaty but it accents the rye notes nicely. Added: the tea was still good, I didn't notice any "whiskey" flavor but it was a little less astringent and Smokey.

About a month ago, my friend room temp infused some Bulleit Rye with Chai Tea. She was doing it for a cocktail, but on it's own, it was actually amazing. The Chai Tea added some really good character that complemented the Rye.

Two thoughts, both related to advertising. An actual ad popped in about 2/3 through for Irish Spring, right when they were talking about Jameson. I thought for a second that it was a clever editing joke. Still bummed that it wasn't, because the timing was perfect. Second, the FROLK ad was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. AD-solutely? Yes.

Iirc, duchess grey is just earl grey that doubles down on the bergamot. I make an old fashioned using a concentrated down version of it that replaces the orange bitters. Haven't come up with a name for it yet if anyone has suggestions.

I need to tell you something; for years I have been mixing Maker's (or other bourbons) with sweet tea and a dash of Angostura bitters. It's an awesome cocktail that is refreshing and easy to drink all day. It's perfect for a cookout, front porch sittin', or even as an offering at an open bar event. Honestly, try it! I call it Kentucky Tea.

This is a good idea especially if you have a whiskey you don't think is anything special. I once had a whiskey that I wasn't really enjoying all that much so I put some orange rind, star anise and a few other spices in it and let it sit for a month, I liked it more after the month. The purists might be horrified but it did make a nice drink. By the way your ad for Frolk had me laughing.

As 24-yr veteran tea blender for a few coffee shops in central PA, absolutely everything you've done here makes absolute sense! As a bartender of 14 yrs, I typically do not infuse the base spirit due to cost concerns. So, if I'm planning an Old-fash'd as a beverage feature, I'm much more likely to infuse the simple. If I'm looking to make something a bit less sweet... I infused into water--I make TEA--and then very slowly simmer it to evaporate the water content before adding the other ingredients. Why do I do it this way? Water-temperatures aside, the process of making tea is fairly predictable--tried and true. Infusing spirits introduces a wild-card factor that leaves lots of opportunity for over-extraction and even outright mistakes that might need to be tossed. That costs money. Non-tannic (which is to say not tea) ingredients are less likely to over-extract. (You can infuse peppercorns for months in 80-pf spirit before they plateau and even then will not over-extract. I pull my peppercorn tincture at 4 months. I pull my [dried, powdered] turmeric tincture within days, tasting daily until I can taste the point of diminishing return.) As an Indian neighbor once taught me, some flavors are extracted better in fat or sugar--which acts very similarly to fat. Others more so in water. And still others in alcohol. When you figure out which medium your ingredients are best extracted, you can set up a multi-tier process that extracts all of the flavors you want and very little of the ones you don't. (The takeaway from twenty years ago: if you're not going simmer your chai-spiced tea directly in milk, you should at least steep it in water that's been sweetened with sugar, honey, etc. If you don't do this, you will end up with a less-than-stellar mug of chai!)

Tried it out. 0.7L of Powers Gold and about 5 teaspoons of Earl grey leaf tea. Left it for 5.5 h as I felt as it tasted best the, however you should try it on the way as it could turn bitter. It ads a nice layer of citrus and chocolate flavours

Love laphroaig 16 - one of the best sippers, but the 8 is so harsh. However the 8 is PERFECT in tea. All of the strong flavors that are too direct straight survive the tea, and it mellows it perfectly. Laphroaig 8, black tea, and a drip of honey is the sore throat medicine of the gods.

I've been pairing my whisky with tea for a while now and you guys HAVE to try doing this with a type of tea called Pu Ehr. It's a type of fermented Chinese tea which is pressed into pucks and comes in two types and is aged for years just like whisky and can be priced like it too!Raw Pu Ehr is like a green tea, grassy, fresh, herbal and goes amazingly with light spey sides like Dalwhinnie or Glenlivet, whereas cooked Pu Ehr is a musty and smokey black tea with deep, earthy flavours. It goes amazingly with slightly smoked whiskies like Benromach cask strength. The whisky really brings out the sweetness of the tea and the tea works as a great occasional palate cleanser. So glad you guys tried this, but give the Pu Ehr a go, I promise you won't regret it!!

Run some jack through some Starbucks Veranda that you fresh ground in a cheap espresso (mr coffee or some such) machine. Try to mix/match that, just understand that you're gonna lose a little proof and shorten the life of the machine. Might be worth while to frost the jack out first?
