@@ricdotdev Look man, I'm happy that you have a wife, that's good for you. But most of us here are virgins, so for you to come on and post this is very unfair and insensitive. I was having a good time watching this video until I saw your comment, and I was like "oh great, someone that has most likely had sex is here!" Please note that I said this sarcastically, because in truth I didn't think it was great at all. I'm just trying to enjoy drinking spirits, but now I'm reminded that I am a virgin and have no woman to share this with. I know most people who watch this channel are in the same boat as me, so they probably didn't appreciate your comment either! I understand you probably meant no harm with your comment, but it's important for you to realise it did indeed cause a great deal of harm and upset. I couldn't even finish my dram after seeing what you wrote. Like, who does that? Who goes out of their way to flex that they've had sex on a video like this? It makes no sense. Apologies if I sound emotional, I'm still rather upset. I wish you and wife nothing but the best, but please stop boasting about having sex to us! Man, Richard is really quite knowledgeable, casually dropping something like “brandy style of aging” (transferring the aging spirit from barrel to barrel). Very thankful for this episode as rum is one of the hardest categories to navigate, especially considering that “white rum” can also be aged in barrels and then carbon filtered to remove the color (no rules)

@@pulkitgupta5367 I think that's what the OP has in mind, but I don't think that's how Barbancourt ages their product. I wouldn't describe solera as a "brandy style of aging" because it is just as commonly used for other spirits including rum.

12:49 -- I think Richard implied this when he said "clear versions of rum", but I figured I'd mention this for the sake of clarity. Some clear rums aren't new make. They are aged in barrels long enough to have a color, but then they get filtered to the point when they become clear again. There are different reasons for this, but the point here is that not all clear rums are new make. I hope I don't sound like a smartass :)

Yeah, there's a load of 3 year old white rums, Flor de Caña does a 4 year old extra seco white rum and even a 7 year old blanco reserva white rum, even Bacardi's white rum has a minimum of 1 year aging on it. I've recently discovered and recommend Appleton Estate 12 Year Rare Casks Jamaica Rum. It comes across more as a whiskey both on the nose and palate. It's great to pair with a 50-75% cacao chocolate that has classic chocolate notes and isn't overly fruity; likewise, this is a good rum for a ganache because of the dark cocoa and vanilla notes. My current favorite scotch is The Dalmore 12 Year (has similar flavor notes), and I am a chocolatier, so Appleton Estate 12 Year Rare Casks Jamaica Rum is in my opinion great for whiskey drinkers, people who like an aged rum that isn't sweet or tropical, and chocolate lovers.

Thank you very, VERY much for this one. After listening to the comments about each of the various rums I paused the video to check the web site of my local state-run distilled spirits vendor to see if they were available here. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the two that sounded like they might be most likely to please my unsophisticated, childlike palate -- the Smith & Cross Jamaican and the Dos Maderas PX 5+5 -- are available here and affordable to boot. Both were, however, listed as being in "Limited Distribution" here. Nevertheless, using the web site's reports of which of their stores had each of them (which I have learned are always to be regarded as being of dubious veracity) I was able to find a few reasonably nearby stores where it was at least claimed that these two rums can be found. And so I set off on a two and a half hour road-trip odyssey, completing a circuit that took me to 5 stores and by the time I had reached the third store I had secured a bottle of each along with three bottles of my usual tipple. I was able to find the Dos Maderas PX 5+5 in a limited edition gift box set that included a pair of glasses that look to me as though they could be used for on the rocks and some cocktails. At the fourth store I found more of the gift boxed Dos Maderas, and after reconsidering my original thought to buy just one, and particularly as I was recalling Briana's extremely positive reaction to the stuff, I decided to splurge and buy another so I will have 4 of the glasses and another bottle to enjoy. I tried the Dos Maderas pretty much as soon as I got home, and it certainly did not disappoint. Very yummy! I will try the Smith & Cross Jamaican on some later date. Thanks for the recommendations, with a special nod and tip of the fedora to Briana for her enthusiastic review of the Dos Maderas.

Iced wines and sauterne are still my favs. Years ago I would buy a very expensive sauterne for select parties. I had to carefully sneak it in and stash it way back in the fridge wrapped in a brown paper bag. These were very tiny bottles and wouldn't have many servings, usually costing between $80 and $200 for one bottle depending on what was in stock (there was a bottle I always dreamed about that was priced at over a thousand bucks. It was very old). I couldn't afford to do it all the time. The rule was I waited until all the "riffraff" left the party and only the core group of long-time friends were left then I would bring it out. Yummy.

You got to try some very good rums! If you want to try a few others that have a nice bourbon or whiskey influence, I have a few recommendations: Don Q rums from Puerto Rico are very good. The 7 year is quite nice, as is the Anejo. They also have a few rums finished in select casks, including rums finished in vermouth and sherry casks. From Barbados, Doorly's 12 and Doorly's XO are both sold at a great price point and are produced by Foursquare. Another Barbados rum, Mount Gay Black Barrel, has some nice oaky notes. If you want to get a little funky, Worthy Park rums from Jamaica have an amazing flavor and some of that true Jamaican funk (or try one of the Hampden rums if you really want to go crazy with the high ester funkiness). For those who enjoy rye whiskeys, give Grander Rye Barrel finished rum from Panama a try. Grander also has had rums finished in Agave, Islay Peat, and Speyside barrels. If you like a little higher proof, seek out rums from Holmes Cay. These rums are sourced from all over the world, including Africa, Australia, Fiji, and Guyana to name a few. And in the U.S., Privateer in Massachusetts is making some delicious American-style aged rums that will easily appeal to whiskey drinkers. Cheers!

Like most, if not all of us, watching this channel, I'm a whiskey drinker(again mostly cocktails). If you can find it, I highly recommend Malahat rum from San Diego. Their spiced rum is the best I've ever had and is great for a whiskey lover. It won a gold medal in the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits competition and comes at a very reasonable price. Their bourbon and rye were both fantastic as well when I went to their distillery for a tasting while on vacation some years back.

I love watching whisky drinkers falling in love with good rum. I always call rum "Whisky's adventurous cousin". There's a lot in rum that I love about whisky, but the sweetness becomes a lot more playful in cocktails or even straight pours. I also say that Rum is my second first love. Whisky being my first first love! (Well, my wife is my true first love. But the sea is my actual first love. So Sea>Wife>Whisky>Rum.)

7:20 I have to be pedantic here: no, you caannot make rum from any sort of sugar. Rum must be made from sugarcane or byproducts of the extraction of crystalline sugar from sugarcane, never from crystalline sugar. There aren't a lot of rules to rum, but that is the one definite rule there is. Next thing you'll say you can make bourbon out of corn syrup.

@Quintinohthree

@@bdwilcox I'm not saying you shouldn't, I'm saying you can't. The legal definition of rum in the US specifies "distilled from the fermented juice of sugar cane, sugar cane syrup, sugar cane molasses, or other sugar cane by-products". Nowhere in there does it allow for anything you'd call sugar, and certainly not anything derived from sugar beats. That's equivalent to saying you could make bourbon from apples. It is simply absurd.

@@Quintinohthree Rum is the most distilled beverage in the world and the rules in the U.S. are hardly what define rum. People around the world make rum from all kinds of sugary goodness and they're more than happy to drink it and call it rum. Also, you're straight-up wrong. The U.S. TTB has labeled Stoneyard Distillery's sugar beet distilled spirit as rum and there's not a sugar cane in sight.
@Quintinohthree
@Quintinohthree Жыл бұрын
@@bdwilcox Nowhere on a Stoneyard bottle will you read the word rum. In error the TTB had allowed them to call their sugar beet spirit rum in the past, but that error has been corrected. US laws absolutely do not define rum for the world, but they do just so happen to record the definition the world uses anyway. You can check it for yourself, the EU and CARICOM for instance hold to an equivalent definition: cocktailwonk.com/2018/12/is-rum-made-from-sugar-or-not.html People make spirits from all kinds of sugary goodness, I'm sure, but the only sugary goodness you can make rum from is sugarcane. Other sugary goodnesses might make whisky, or brandy, or mezcal, or tequila, or whatever else, but they do not make rum. There aren't a whole lot of rules to rum, but this is the one.

The best rum I’ve ever tasted was “Ron Santiago,” in Santiago de Cuba. I was told it’s made in the old Bacardi works (the Bacardi folks left following the Cuban Revolution). No, you can’t get it in the United States. I don’t even know if it’s exported from Cuba. The main Cuban export rum seems to be “Club Havana,” but to my taste, Club Havana isn’t half as good as Ron Santiago.

This was great, I don't think I'd ever have dared give someone Smith and Cross to sip...NEAT. What a madlad. However, the nose IS pure heaven. Put it in a mai tai or swizzle though...chef's kiss. The right cocktail made with Smith and Cross is a transcendental experience. If you want a cheap sippable rum to try for yourself, I'd recommend Doorly's 12, or Doorly's XO. I prefer the XO, it's finished in a sherry cask and it shows. Absolutely delicious for the price + bonus round: mix with a barspoon or 2 of Falernum and a dash of the bitters of your choice for a Carribean old fashioned(or a corn 'n oil, but that's a stupid fucking name for a cocktail). Appleton Estate 12 is also pretty good.

After the video, my thought was, "While I love whisk(e)y, why would I want a rum that reminds me of whisk(e)y?!" It would be like wanting a vodka that tasted like whisky. Ha! A few months ago I had Beluga brand vodka, chilled in a shot glass. It was the best vodka I'd ever had. It tasted nothing like whisky, did not remind me in the least of whisky, and had I not had to drive I'd have had more. If you were introducing a rum or vodka drinker to whisky, would you look for a whisky that reminded you of rum or vodka, or would you look for the best and most accessible whisky to offer to the drinker?
@Quintinohthree
@Quintinohthree Жыл бұрын
A vodka that tastes like whisky wouldn't be a vodka at all. That's kind of the point, there is a continuum from vodka to whisky via light and grain whiskybut how they're appreciated is totally different to begin with. Rum and whisky however can have a lot in common and are appreciated in just about the same way. Overt flavors, aging, all that. So you can get yourself a rum that has some decent overlap with mainstream whisky, and to someone accustomed to whisky that will be much easier to get started with because it will be on the same baseline as whisky, just with very different notes above that baseline. And the beautiful thing is, those rums are the accessible ones.

It's potentially worth noting that in the EU/UK rum is not allowed to have more than 20g of sugar per litre, or be flavoured in any way. If it fails either of these then it's not allowed to be called rum and usually goes by "rum spirit drink". There's also a lot of very good flavourful clear rums, even something like Wray & Nephew Overproof has loads of flavour despite the 80% ABV. For the Smith & Cross I'm surprised noone picked out old banana peel as that's what can come over very strongly in it for me. Personally I would've included a drier rum like Angostura 1787 for whiskey drinkers, and then if you can find it their 1824 for a warming dark fruit flavour. Basically anything Angostura ever make... There's also amazing rums for more budget prices like Flor De Cana and Plantation
@Quintinohthree
@Quintinohthree Жыл бұрын
Wray and Nephew overproof is 63%, not 80%. Still, that's about the upper echelons of what typical cask strength whisky gets you, while overproof rum really only gets started at that proof.
