. . . an informal chat with Serge Valentin, the proprietor of WhiskyFun and stalwart of the MaltManiacs. Someone who shows just what the internet was invented for, the articulate and intelligent freedom of speech.

I debated whether to add a comment to this but I feel I have to. Serge Valentin has done more than anyone in the internet age to inform us about great whisky and great spirit. Others attempt it but Serge is second to none. His use of language, and English is not his native tongue, is marvelous. Everyone should check out Whisky Fun. Respects to Ralfy of course.

So true what Serge says about tasting the same whiskeys but I never thought about it in terms of taste. The same applies to music. Nothing will help you appreciate classical music more than to listen to the same piece by 4-5 different conductors, orchestras or musicians. You pick up those subtle nuances and differences and it really informs sharpens your perspective.

Serge, This is a great parson I had the pleasure to meet at a whisky live with olivier and luc, two other maltmaniacs. He had us tasted a Great Clynlish 1953 specialy made for Italy. My memory is clear but this was not the case for my head. Very nice souvenir.

Excellent vlog as usual, Ralfy. I really enjoy watching your whisky musings, and do does lots of people who doesn't write to tell you so. Great to actually hear Serge's words and not "just" the written ones. These vlogs has done wonders for my understanding and appreciation of single malts (and blends!). My wallet is not as pleased though. ;)

Very nice to see and hear Serge, I've been a malt enthousiast ever since my first Ardbeg 10, over a decade ago! Then I discovered Maltmadness and the Maniacs - the rest is history ;) Interviews with people like Johannes or Serge's friend and famous wine maker Olivier Humbrecht would be nice, if you ever meet them, grab them Ralphy!

I like his advice a lot. It's not too expensive and it's a great exercise to get an official bottling and then one or two independent bottlings, probably different cask types, and to taste them side by side. You could even extend that into blends if you know that a blend has a lot of a particular whisky in it (e.g. Black Bottle, the OB ncf Bunnahabhain and then a single cask IB). Do that for an Islay, a Speyside, a HIghlander etc. and with 9 affordable bottles you've got a great start.

It's good to hear Serge recommend the Glen Lochy as I have recently purchased two independent bottlings from this now defunct distillery. A 21yo and a 30yo.

I love this distillery generaly fresh and malty...perfect for summer time! ;-) Thank you for your videos. Adrien LACOMBE.

Wow, it is cool to see both of you in a video, I've lurked around both of your sites for a while now. I appreciate all the things I learn from both of you! Thanks for always keeping it fun. (If you're drinking Scotch and not having fun, you are wasting A LOT of time and money.) I think I might be having even more fun if I were I were sipping Scotch in front of a Speyside Castle. Fancy indeed. Jealousy ill becomes, but in High Def, I can actually see how much cleaner your air is than mine.

Hi Ralfy! Love the channel! What can you say about single grain Scotch whiskys? They don't seem to be very well known and easy to acquire. Thanks!

Given the inconsistent nature of whisky, is it always wise to calibrate your senses on a bottle of whisky which is familiar to you? The subtle changes in the contents of the spirit from bottle to bottle could throw you off rather than waking up on the wrong side of the bed.

This video makes me feel a lot better where he talks about sometimes not being in the right shape for nosing and tasting. In the past when i nose and taste sometimes its not the same experience as always and i fear that I'm either losing my senses or the whisky has gone bad.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be only about culture. In Ontario, for example, Provincial Government has an incredible revenue from LCBO and Beerstores. (these are the only places that can sell alcoholic beverages in Ontario and are owned by the government [for those who want to know]) So I don't think we can see that anytime soon.
