Stellar review and commentary Ralfy. Oh boy youre so rite! if you don't "condition" your wood prior to casking the results can be down rite horrifying. Turn away for an hr or two and you can find your spirit abused... in an irreversible Over-Oaked affair with no way out. (save blending) What makes me wonder, isn't that Whiskey-Mat 101... why they would ever neglect this most essential step in the maturation process is puzzling. It must be intentional. cheers

To date we have tried Isle of Jura and to be honest, we think you were very generous in your review. I think their casks are tired and should be retired. They should pick up the phone, get some new once used Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey barrels sent over fresh and start over.

I couldn't watch this without pouring myself a wee whisky. I'm not far into connoisseurship of any alcohol, therefore your videos are snowballing my learning. I was redirected to your channel from an article about the similarities between your observations and their overlap with observing tea, and the more I learn and think about food and drinks outside of my home in tea, the more interested I am. Your videos are warming and mentally clarifying... Just like a spirit.

Just a suggestion for a ralfy-review: I found the experiments done withe Bere Barley by Bruichladdich quite interesting. Now found that there is an Orkney Bere by Arran as well. Maybe even interesting to compare the two and thus find out a little about the influence of the barley on the taste. For example I found tequila-notes in the Laddie which I did not experience anymwhere else yet (instead in Tequila of course, haha)

Jura just brought a new range on the market, full range from 10 to 18 and NAS, with each bottle gaining 10€ (+25% price increase for the 12 yo for ex). It starts to be really expensive, especially when the quality is average (but even for good quality). And also, I don't get how they can change in a night the final product you have in your glass of a full range of whiskies that mature 10 to 18 years....

Pleasantly surprised with this 12yo after having been disappointed with the 10yo. Extra body, spice and nutty citrus that the 10 lacked. Though I wouldn't place it in my top 10, or 20, or 30 list, it's still a very decent whisky for the price (bought from the popular supermarket sainsburies, in the U.K., in August 2017, for £26 (70cl). Strip the colouring though please Jura. Good lord, I would have appreciated this whisky far more had it been it's natural colour, even if it's passive and light. Natural is beautiful!

Of course producers want more active wood influence, because traditional cask influence is slower and more subtle and requires longer to infuse the whisky with flavour and, with NAS, producers aren't interested in age maturation and quality nearly as much as they are with quick profit. The flavour quality that's being removed through cask reconditioning isn't that of wood which is "inert and exhausted", it's simply wood which does not lend major flavour influence quickly, but rather in a slower and more measured way - and producers don't want that (and won't wait for it anyway); they want big "new wood" flavours to help disguise the flaws in young whisky because short time in a subtle cask simply won’t mask, much less help, the immature spirit they want to sell you in any case. Boycott NAS, malt mates - you have nothing to lose but your current lack of information about what you’re drinking. I was impressed with the criticism of the industry, although it stopped just short of actually telling people that brand ambassadors lie to consumers “as a part of their job” - which is, unfortunately, the truth and I do INDEED hope we hear “more about that later”, because malt mates spending hard-earned money NEED to hear the truth and we need far more frank, and less diplomatic, discussion OF that truth. As much as I like and respect Ralfy, it is frustrating when I see that the viewers who support this channel only get occasional hints of the critical truth about the whisky industry when it is those very same viewers who, as consumers, are being fleeced by that same industry which doesn’t want that truth told.
@thewhiskybothy10 жыл бұрын
good point well made, I will indeed there will be 'more about that later' but not too much at once !
@maltfusion674310 жыл бұрын
Strangely enough a lot of my all time great bottles have been independent refill cask versions. I find that with 1st fill you get more obvious boring flavors like vanilla and raisins but with 20+ yo exhausted wood you start to get into more abstract territory like antique furniture and old leather which I really adore. Of course sometimes old refill casks taste like you are chewing a plank of wood but I'm willing to gamble.
@antoinem941110 жыл бұрын
Maltfusion there is some truth in that , although there is a flip side to that coin too. with refill indies you get a lot of rough ultra spirity stuff which really feels like the bottler recycled some half dead cask. have such examples at home. many have been dissapointing. i usually stay away from a whisky if i see its colour is bright yellow yet it states "sherry cask". first fill Sherry is great, but you need a disitllery with a suitable spirit.

Malt454 Ralfys on message! He "gets it" It did however take a wee coaxing from the maltmates (duely noted!) but now just short of fiercly on target he's not giving quarter to the liars(now now!) I get the whole diplomatic angle but he's rite in dishing distain in small doses. If you dump all the time its as bad as not dumping at all. Nobody's gonna take you seriously if all we do is bellyache...I'm with ya all the way and you know me. I'm not the passive aggressive type either. I'd really like them to start with proper labeling first and foremost, telling us "whats in my bottle" my mates & I have stood tall on Boycott and it is a real eye opener to see how "NAS saturated" the Industry has become in just the past 12 months!! NAS is not going away too many folks are indifferent to the facts and the stockholders demand profit. It can be a Marketing Coup for brand Ambassadors telling us this malt has 50% 25yo 30%18yo and 20%7yo. That can be told in many fuzzy malty ways and since times are changing, the Brand Ambassadors need to catch up with the times(instead of telling us us stories of Thor and his pals) Peace
@wb706510 жыл бұрын
Lots of excellent "non-NAS" drams out there. Why should I buy NAS? I don´t!
@Malt45410 жыл бұрын
I understand Ralfy "gets it", but the key thing is what he's willing to say about it. Ralfy's approach may or not work better than mine - time will tell - but, as I said, he stopped short of calling liars "liars" and the internet has been filled with "subtle" criticism of the whisky industry for quite some time and, as you say, NAS has only gathered momentum. Industry people, in my opinion, don't need to be, and can't be, "coached" away from what they're doing; it's already a result of a cost/benefit calculation. What needs to change are the fundamentals OF that calculation through lost sales. NAS is not going away - well, no, it won't on its own because people are not speaking out and acting against it and they won't if critics are coy with the truth. Consumers who hope that the industry will "come to its senses" without consumers first coming to their own senses and taking action are living in a dream world and I won't concede defeat in the fight against NAS and other industry silliness before that fight begins - and Ralfy could really help with that.
