Hi Ralfy. Revisiting this review as I revisit a bottle of glenkinchie in 2021. Would be great to see a new review of this widely available whiskey sometime. You are my go to whiskey guide and reference point for the last few years. God bless!

Sitting in a pub with very limited selection. I spied this bottle which I’ve never tried and here I am watching this review with my dram at hand. Sweet butterscotch vanilla and quite fruity. Very easy to drink and it has me thinking this is a perfect scotch for a beginner. Subtle and mild but a step up from the usual suspects (The Glenlivet, Gkenfiddich etc)

Located a 43% Distiller's Edition Double Matured 1991 Glenkinchie G/279-7-D bottled in 2005 (expensive at $79). Amontillado sherry cask finish -- the aroma of Spanish marcona almonds was keen. Un aroma maravilloso. Just today, I realized the Malt Maniac Matrix score was 78. I originally gambled and bought the 1991 Glenkinchie blind bcs I wanted an experience that included amontillado which is a sherry I understand and am quite fond of. (We hear about the use of dry or sweet oloroso casks for whisky maturation, but I don't see too many producers using amontillado sherry casks.) For 1-3 days after uncorking the amontillado, the sherry aroma was strong and lovely, but the nectar seemed hot and out of balance even after adding water. To complicate tasting matters, the amontillado aroma gave way to the vanillin notes reminiscent of American oak after 1 teaspoon of water. To my great frustration, I knew complexity was there despite an apparent backdrop of poor integration and unkind sawdust. I walked away for a bit. About 10-12 days exposed to bottle's air gap, and the nectar has morphed into something completely different. I had to decant today because a brittle cork gave way. Will have to use the preserve gas to protect the whisky. An incredible learning experience. Today: 10 + minutes with 1 teaspoon of H2O -- a delicious thinking experience. Thank you for the herculean efforts, Ralfy. Am happy to be part of your sponge audience.

Glenkinchie 12 is a superb whisky. I've tried quite a few whiskies now and this seems to have a unique taste and smell of its own. So many whiskies these days are hard to distinguish from one to the other. If Old Pulteney 12 got 90/100 I definitely think this should have got the same mark.

I was on a tour here earlier in 2015 and asked about the addition of colourants. The guide was very candid and said we have been known to add colourants, which I thought was very honest of her, although not what we want in our whisky!

I don't pick up a lot of the subtle tastes or can't really put a name to them if I do but this one really opened up flavorwise the 2nd night after I opened the bottle. Just standard whiskey liquor on first approach but the complexity and flavour more evident after leaving it a day or 2

Ralfy. I have received over the years two bottles of Glen Grant 10 YO from friends who purchased them at the airport coming home and really enjoyed them. I feel the Glen Grant is far superior to the similary priced The Glenlivets/fiddich...This time my son brought me back a Glen Grant 16 from Geneva International airport. Wow Ralfy. I think you ought to review this. 43% abv, must be natural colour (lovely pale yellow, almost identical to Glencadam 10), although it doesn't say so on the label and is unofrtunetely obviously chill filtered as it remained crystal clear after adding water. Obviously real quality Ex-Bourbon casks. Fresh, green fruits, countryside heather honey, slight smokey wood flavours and a delicious almond and fruit cake finish. I love the The Glenlivet Nadurra 16 but the Glen Grant 16 has just taken it's place as my favourite Speyside now. More complex, cleaner flavours and simply more enjoyable.

Reb Mordechai thank you - thank you - thank you. I was eyeing the Glen grant 10 for a while now. Cheap @ 30$ in the DFS but always thought I might go wrong & hence buy something else. Will keep an eye out for the 16 as well since I fancy the nadurra as well - Cheers Reb!

Came back to your review after a few months because I was finally able to find the Glenkinchie 12. I've had a good chuckle since I migrated along exactly the path you describe: Speyside, Islay, Highlands and Islands and, finally -- Oh, I guess I should probably get around to sipping some Lowlands. :^) I think you've nailed it: these are underexplored and terribly interesting if you're patient. Thanks again for the insights!

I had this a couple years back and as you said it was rather "simple" to put it well. This whisky was not one of that whiskys that takes you on a journey, and then continues on the journey without ya, we both got off the train at the same stop! Wasn't bad but, for me, my sample was nothing to write home about! Kinda expensive too.

I have been waiting for a good discussion about resampling a whisky after it has been opened. I had a 15 year Glenffidich opened it up drank about half the bottle then left it for 6 months, upon a revisiting I really liked how it had mellowed. This was before I found this channel and really started to try and develop any sense in whisky tasting and I always wondered what was going on.

I tried a pour of this last night, and my oh my did I enjoy it. Only critique I can give is that it's a bit thin, but the taste is fantastic. It's a bit funny that having listened to a few people give thoughts on this scotch the consensus is that it really comes to life with a little water. I typically like a little water in whiskey (delivered in the form of ice), but I thought this was was too nice neat and also subtle enough that it might not stand up to some water. Guess I will have to revisit.

I'm slowly but surely 'working' my way through the well known distilleries.. I started off in the Highlands, really by chance and I'm now in Campbeltown enjoying Springbank. I'm looking forward to enjoying few Lowland malts though in time and Glenkinchie is one I'll be ordering.. Furthermore, I've noticed that distilleries operated by Diageo offer 20cl bottles of most if not all their younger whiskies, I think this is brilliant as it gives 8x25ml drams, perfect for a relatively inexpensive opportunity to try quite a few styles of whisky from multiple regions.. Many Thanks to Diageo for that, but I do wish they didn't chill-filtered or colour your produce..

My first and so far, only whisky distillery tour was Glenkinchie when I went to Scotland in 1999. I had a hard time drinking this when they gave out a glass at the end of the tour. I want to try this again to see how I feel now. I suspect it's better than I remember now that I'm older and slightly wiser in all things whisky.

Thank you Ralfy, I bought two bottles of Glenkinchie in the last 5 years. I have found the 10 years old in particular, very difficult to get used to. The predominant impression I was left with, was that of the nip of the alcohol when approaching it, it seems to be the spirit that comes forward, worked hard to find the cask there. In the overall I had a disconcerting feeling, for I had approached it looking for floral and relatively delicate impressions, I thought I would find in a Lowlands malt, while the spirit kept being dominant. If I may, I would like to say that I found the malt mention "misogynistical" really unpleasant. Perhaps the lad that sent it had a bad experience. Generally speaking, from all us living creatures I know of, women are to me by far, the loveliest, most beautiful, interesting and complex- in a constructive way, with us far behind. I see a parallel between the small complexity of brown spirits relative to the delightful one of women. Kind Regards, Amiel

Hi Ralfy, I agree with all what you say about what you've eaten etc. before tasting and how it can affect your taste buds; I'd also like to add that the season of the year that you're drinking very much affects the experience. I live in France and I find that my choice of dram is very much affected by the weather, light fruity whiskies (Gendronach, Dalwhinnie, Macallan) are far more palatable in Spring and Summer, whereas the heavier smokier, peatier whiskies can only really be enjoyed when the weather is gye dreich outside. Also, I'd love a review from you of Clan Campbell if you could ever find it in Scotland, it's made by Pernod Ricard only for the French market as far as I know, and it's basically Aberlour blend. I'd love to know what you think of it, personally I find it much more flavoursome than e.g. Ballantine . Anyway, slainthe mlath and Ralfy-go-bragh!!!

I have a question. I've bought 48 single malts (here in the states) based upon watching your reviews, and my question is about this Glenkinchie 12. No problem with any other single malt, except this one to me has an unusual smell/taste, and when people hear my description they might be shocked... to me it's a faint sewer smell. There are worse ways of describing that smell. I could say it also tastes that way, faintly, but how would I know? I can't say it tastes like shite... not an expert on that. Have you heard that kind of thing before? Do you know any technique I can use to mask that strange aroma/taste? Maybe sticks of wood, or Vermont maple syrup? (Writing from Vermont.) Thanks!
@TheOriginalRaster9 жыл бұрын
+Raster I re-tested just now while re-watching this review. Now a little more accurate description: A relatively late aftertaste... strangely bitter and sensed on the front and front side of the tongue, but not tip of the tongue, and my description above might not actually be that accurate because I'm not getting an aroma... just the aftertaste. My bottle has sat with a little air in the bottle for 3+ weeks. Back to my question. Any suggestions?
@thewhiskybothy9 жыл бұрын
+Raster . . . leave the bottle with the cork on for a month and then come back to it. It may be that the smell/taste character is simply too unusual for your tastes at the moment. If you don't like this one, don't buy Tobermory, it will be 'worse'
@TheOriginalRaster9 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Will do.
@alexk30886 жыл бұрын
In my opinion it's peat. When I first encountered peat as a faint whisp in a cheap blend, I was also reminded of a sewer smell. Later I tried full-on peat and liked it, so now I also enjoy mild peat notes. It's context driven. Many expensive cheeses smell like feet to the uninitiated. Also some wines and Cognac have foxy stinky notes, I think it's known as "RANCIO". Well, peat is decomposed vegetation.

@@brentkasl6510 Well, 5 years ago was a different time😄. Lowlands has come a long way since then, but I never did find a favorite. As for the others, I have so many favorites now it's hard to narrow it down. I'm far more concerned with individual distilleries. For highlands, Glengoyne, Clynelish and Glen Garioch, for Lowlands, Glengoyne (they sit on the border), Speyside I'd go with Tamdhu. Cambeltown is defninitely Springbank. For the others, each island has it's own character. I'd want something from Orkney like Highland Park, Talisker 10 from Skye, The Arran Malt, Maybe a Jura. From Islay, my picks are Bunnahabhain and Caol Ila. This is already a lot and I didn't even discuss peated vs sherried vs plain for each region.

I don't understand the rating system. If it's a lot of people rating and it comes out as an 87 then that gives a good idea of general opinion, which is useful. But one single person giving out an arbitrary number, I don't see the point in that. Furthermore, if a single person was to use an arbitrary scale, I'd imagine it'd be better to not base it off of the letter grade, like this system appears. That is, average being 70 and failure is 50. It makes more sense to me to use the full 100: 1 - 10: Poison 11 - 20: Undrinkable 21 - 30: Abysmal 31 - 40: Poor 41 - 50: Bad 51 - 60: Mediocre 61 - 70: Decent 71 - 80: Good 81 - 90: Excellent 91 - 100: World Class At this point, however, I would just erase the numbers and use the words to describe the drink.

Hey Ralfy ! Always look forward to your reviews, we are counting down our days until our month in the U.K. (Primarily in Scotland 😎) in December. I am sure we will have MANY strolls around the glass to keep warm and toasty
