When I pick up a new bottle to enjoy, I always know straight where to go when I crack her open. You have taught me so much about tasting Scotch whiskey and you have single handedly made every bottle more enjoyable. I thank you warmly from the middle of America, and I hope God blesses you and Yours.

An absolutely fantastic video on Glenfarclas. Someone recommended me Glenfarclas 12 about four years ago and it is hitting so many notes you've described. Knowing the history and information you've provided adds to the appreciation of a great scotch whisky.

Every time I watch one of your vids I learn something... This time, I recently tasted some Glenfarclas 15, some Glendronach 12, and some Mortlach Rare Old... I made the observation that the Glenfarclas and the Glendronach were of a really pleasing high quality, and something was missing from the Mortlach. It all came together when you explained how direct firing the stills yields a richer tasting spirit, and I had that *Aha!* moment... Thanks again, Ralfy!

Wonderful dram, I opened mine one litre bottle two weeks ago and I'm still enjoying every drop of it. First sherry scotch that has hit the mark for me, I've never been fan of sherry scotch whisky. A find it a lot better than it's 18yo brother witch is twice more expensive. In that particular Glenfarclas 18yo there was also some sulphur present. And the price of this 12yo in Travel Free shop is just so cheap... Best bang for the buck

I have been enjoying Glenfiddich 12 and Arran 10 for several weeks now and one of the interesting things I notice is this “cooked” peach note from Glenfiddich, whereas Arran’s got more of a fresh calamansi-orange juice. My guess is that’s probably coming from direct-firing the still you mentioned here. Thank you always for guiding me through all these mellifluous malt moments!

Just tasting this for the first time. My preference for a while was Glendronach, but lately I don't think it's what it used to be. This is the closest thing to what I remember Glendronach being, and I think it will be my go-to Sherry casked malt. And less expensive always helps. Thanks for the background on these distilleries.

Tried it for the first time not long ago and was immediately hit with a sense of familiarity when nosing, but for the life of me just couldn't pin point what the smell resembled. Finally had a break through, it's kaki-no-tane, a Japanese snack (often served in bars) that's made from rice and shaped into the size of a persimmon seed. Been eating that since I was a kid.

Pleasure to join you in the bothy for some common sense and a bit of history, especially after the week I've just had here in the U.S. where common sense and remembering the lessons of history are in very short supply. Ralfy, I just bought a bottle of Glenfarclas 12 43%. What's curious is that it's absolutely the same visually, bottle, tube and label, EXCEPT the bottle is now dark brown glass and the back label says "natural color". Some distilleries do eventually listen.

While Ralfy was able to praise the Glenfarclas distillery for their traditional practices and and family-owned attention to detail, I imagine that part of him was itching to say he wishes it was 46%, non-chill-filtered, and not artificially coloured.😊

I've had both, and 105 has a very significant alcoholic bite to it. It has a lot of character and taste but the proof makes it a bit rough if you don't regularly try cask strength whiskeys. Diluting it with water helps but I prefer the full cask strength bite. The 105 is the 12 yr old but richer and more aggressive. Hope that helps. Just my personal experience with it.

Got it for the price meaning to use it as a "tongue warmer" before pouring something I consider better. It's still meant for that but I have to admit, the more I try this the more I like it. It's just a good enjoyable dram, you just need to get over the alcohol aggressiveness (let it rest for a while).

Hi Ralfy. Unfortunately, I believe around 2005 Glendronach converted to steam heating their stills. Also, another great distillery who direct-fired their stills was Longmorn who also converted to steam in 1994, which i notice a definite difference in the distillate between young/older bottlings.

No color added to any Glenfarclas scotches, which is a minimum criteria for me. I also like the dark, tinted bottles (which they all are now - even the 10 and 12 years), because they resist degrading due to direct sunlight - not that the bottle stays on my shelf long enough to suffer from that anyway.

I am thinking about buying a bottle of this and blending it the 105 to amp up the ABV a bit... I cannot find the 15 and the 25 is $190usd...too much. I bought the last Billy Walker Glendronach 12 bottled in March 2016 at my old Asia market today..$57usd.. I may have found the last of those in Siem Reap. $190 for the 25 seems too much considering I found Glendronach 18s for $82 last year.

@JimmyLeg
@JimmyLeg 7 жыл бұрын
Wikipedia says "Factors affecting the chill filtering process include the temperature, number of filters used, and speed at which the whiskey is passed through the filters. The slower the process and the more filters used, the more impurities will be collected, but at increasing cost." Take that for what it's worth.

Ralfy, could you please tell what aspects of Glenfarclas 17 y/o you don't like? As far as I remember in one of your previous vidoes you mentioned one can observe the maturation of whisky as it ages in Glenfarclas's 10, 12, 15, 17, 21, 25 and 30 y/o expressions as they are exclusively matured in -more or less same quality and sized (this is my addition)- sherry casks. Bearing this in mid, what makes 17 y/o inferior to other aged Glenfarclas expressions?

Hello Ralfy, according to this article whiskyscience.blogspot.cz/2015/09/scottish-pot-still-variations.html it seems there're more distilleries using direct-fired stills. And as somebody mentioned earlier, Glendronach switched from direct-fired to steam coil heating in 2005. "There are still Scottish distilleries using direct-fired stills; Glenfiddich, Glenfarclas and Macallan use direct-firing for both wash and spirit stills, while Springbank, Glen Garioch and Tobermory use direct-fired wash stills."

Ralfy, let me say first, big fan of the channel. I do however have a slight complaint, in that I feel your ratings (malt marks) are slightly inconsistent. A few videos ago you rated Glenmorangie 18yo an 84, yet in this video, as it appeared, you had more positive things to say about this whiskey, and yet receives only 1 point higher. Not quite understanding how that happens, considering you weren't impressed with the Glenmorangie. Slainte

Hey Ralfy, you've rated 89 points the 10 yo back in 2011. I was expecting that the 12 yo to be at the same level if not better as it's bottled at a higher strength.

. . . I always rate just as I find a whisky, without reference to previous scores or anyone else's opinion.

I wasn't expecting such a mediocre score when I saw this review posted. Tis a shame we don't have the 15 or 18 in Chicago, instead we have 12 and 17, 21 pretty common at a good whisky store. 21 is very good.

I hate peat, so as a sherry whisky fan, would I be put off by this one?
@VazzVegas

There's no peat. It's just a little spicy in the finish that may make someone think it may be peat. Personally, I find the finish to taste like spicy oak, and of course the sherry, which you get all the way through from beginning to end.

You mentioned they are careful with their casks. Just opened a 1L bottle and first smell was rotten eggs. What a reek!!! The bottle is tainted with too much sulphur. Tastes sensational though.
