It is really sad and shocking that this Yoshifumi Kondō's first and only animated film he ever directed. He could be so much potential to become one of Studio Ghibli's best animated directors like Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. It is really sad and such a shame. I'm going to give this movie a watch!

apparently Miyazaki did designate Kondo as the studios succeeding - for lack of a better word- leader once he retired, until his tragic death. Hope you enjoyed it!

I like those slice of life movies Ghibli makes, but I have a little bit of a different view on them..I mean, I grew up on stories by Astrid Lindgreen and other Nordic and German writers, I am kind of used to this kind of stuff. Ghibli came a little bit too late to the game to touch me the same way, but I get why others feel connected with it.

The final scene is when Seiji shouts out that he loves Shizuku and then cuts to credits. That's how it ends in some Ghibli films, an anti-climatic ending with little to no epilogue that leaves us a bit underwhelmed.

This is the most underrated ghibli movie hands down and also my personal favorite. It may not be as grand and spectacular as something like Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away but I've never related more to a character in any other ghibli movie like I related to Shizuku. It's such a heartwarming and pure movie.

Also the movie has a real catchy John Denver song they sing / cover throw-out. This was one of the fims I had him put in the animation hat but I don't know if I was the ONLY one to suggest it and other films I did suggest have not been pulled yet so I don't know if they are still in there. Don't have the money do afford a patron and I some times have bad luck sending the e-mail properly, it bounces back as unsendable some times.

It's really unfortunate that this film's director wasn't able to make more movies. I ought to watch this someday (along with most of Studio Ghibli's library). As for your next classic review, I can sum it up in seven words: THERE CAN BE MIRACLES WHEN YOU BELIEVE!

Cary Elwes is the cat statue in this movie as well as a very similar statue of the same name in The Cat Returns. He has also voiced several other cats in animated movies. Typecasting?

IMO the fact that it’s based on reality on not fantasy makes it a perfect, even meta, addition to the Ghibli library. The MC is very relatable to Ghibli fans because she loves fairy tales, tries to read them all and even wishes her life was like one, just like Ghibli fans love the fantasy Ghibli movies, try to watch them all, and even yearn for a fantastic adventure. I’m sure many Ghibli fans got inspired and considered trying to be an artist only to be doubtful their work wouldn’t live up to their inspirations. When you look at it through that lens, it’s pretty empowering to the viewer that you don’t need to meet extraordinary creatures or visit unfamiliar worlds. All you need is your imagination and the courage to start trying.

I have so much affection towards the film. I found it intensely relatable/ inspiring when I was younger as I had a massive passion for writing. This is just such a gorgeous slice of life film that I find insanely underrated. Great review my man!

Yoshifumi Kondo was not quite the first Ghibli director besides Miyazaki and Takahata. Ocean Waves came out in 1993, however it aired on TV rather than being shown theatrically. So Kondo was the third director for a Ghibli feature shown in a theater.

You know how everyone agrees that Spirited Away is the best Ghibli movie. Well, I agree it’s the best from an objective standpoint. For me, this is my favorite Ghibli movie. The way this film presents itself makes it feel like it was tailor-made for me with its themes and having my most relatable main protagonist out of any movie I’ve ever seen. The story is really charming, believable, and dramatic. It doesn’t feel over or under played at any point. It delivers the exact emotions it wants me to feel. Watching this film really helped me in a time I really needed it. And because of that and more, Whisper of the Heart is my pick for my favorite film from Studio Ghibli and… …well, yeah, I can comfortably say this is in my top FIVE favorite movies of all time. 10/10
