Implotex has sent me a compressor for review. Its main feature is silence. So it was a good occasion to explore the decibel-scale and make some sound level measurements - compared with my typical discount compressor.
I also have a little fun with ping-pong balls...

This right here is how you do a review, especially a sponsored one. The science, the facts, the small scale experiments all draw the viewer in, it entertains, informs and educates all at the same time. It's telling that you put time and effort into the video, that you actually cared.

+BaconMinion Thanks! 'Sponsored video' is something new to me, but I accepted this one since implotex didn't demand anything. They just sent me the compressor for a video test. So I had free hands to make the video exactly like I wanted it to be. Including some science of course to fit my channel and personal interest. And yes, I have been working on this video in my spare time since december 2015, so I'm glad you noticed the effort put into it :)

Mikej1592 I agree. They even sent me one with a crooked sticker so I'm confident they just sent me a random one from their storage and not a 'specially' prepared or pre-tested one. I will not accept doing tests of products if the seller doesn't give me free hands to make my video like I want it. If I ever will be asked to make a 'commercial' for a product I would ask for a lot of money for the many hours and work - and have them upload the video on their own channel and not mine :) Thanks for watching!

Thank you. You are the first person to do a proper review on "silent" air compressors. In addition to being well thought out, you also by-passed the camera's AGC which would otherwise completely negate the sound comparisons. The only other comparison I would have liked is the sound level difference when the tank is empty compared to when the tank is near full and the motor is working harder.
@brainiac75
@brainiac75 8 жыл бұрын
+Pro1er Thanks! It is actually tricky to make comparable sound clips in a video. But the recordings from the Zoom H6 matches quite well what I experience in real life. As you can tell by the shown waveforms the difference in sound pressure level is small between start/end. The sound is however quite different as you mention. In the watt-test I show clips of start/near end for both compressors. If you listen carefully you may be able to notice the difference in sound (underneath my endless talking...)

Holy crap, that's amazing :) I hate having to be in the same room with my compressor, but its a rare occurrence. I am tempted to get this, but I cannot get myself to since my compressor still does its job, but I do know what I will be replacing it with. Love how you showed the spinning of the ball disturbing the low and high pressure zones. Would love a more in depth explanation, but I assume this is the same principle that allows balls to 'curve' when you throw them by giving the ball spin.
@brainiac75
@brainiac75 8 жыл бұрын
It sure also surprised me, that a piston compressor doesn't have to be obnoxiously loud... Yes, Bernoulli's Principle is also in play when 'curving' a ball: www.livescience.com/32714-how-does-a-curveball-curve.html

I want one! Compressed air is convenient but there are only quiet running machines made for industrial use avaible. The screw compressor we have at work are around 63-65 dB while operating but a machinelike that cost 1000s of dollars and require 3 phase power as well and also way to big for a home. Smaller piston machines for non industrial use that anyone can buy are so loud, around 100 dB its impossible to use in a home, I have some good earmuffs laying around but my neighbours would go crazy on me first time i started it thinking an entire demolition crew had let loose in my apartment while i just try blow out some dust behind my shelves where my vacuum cant reach. A machine like this would be perfect!

This is funny. I use pumps and compressors in my job. That air filter looks like the particulate filter on our "zero air" units (used to provide pollutant-free air for calibration purposes). +SHADOWxWOLF Yes and yes. Airbrushing is easier when you are not jump scared everytime the compressor turns on ;) At this price I would also expect a regulator was included. All of their larger models have one but this one is probably aimed for people that will never need it. Otherwise it should be cheap and relatively easy to mount an air regulator yourself. I may have to try it sometime even though I'm not a handyman...

As desirable as a quiet compressor is, it is not the most important aspect of a compressor. What matters most to me is max PSI and recover time to reach max pressure. What good is a silent compressor that takes 20 minutes or longer to reach max pressure. I'll take a louder compressor if it can completely recharge in under 2 minutes. Those too are the sorts of details that matter when reviewing compressors. ;-)

If you want almost a COMPLETELY silent compressor, here's an idea: 1. Salvage a still functional, quiet refrigerator. 2 Reuse your old, noisy, compressor's pressure switch and storage tank. 3. Safely and legally drain out the old refrigerator's coolant. 4. Attach the side that blows out air when plugged in to the old compressor's tank. 5. Wire the new, almost completely silent, compressor through the old one's pressure regulator. (so it shuts off without blowing your tank up) I've seen them hit 14 bar (>200 lbs PSI) without even breaking a sweat. They're a little slow but ultra quiet.

Your air output figures are a significant over estimation. Bare with my units, A single phase single stage piston compressor makes at best 1 CFM per 0.25 horsepower. That means the Implotex is 2 CFM (57 l/min) and your standard compressor is 4.5 CFM (127.5 l/min)

Hi Pete. I just tested my unit: From 0-8 bar took 1 minute 17 seconds. The tank capacity is 9 liter. That is 56 l/min in your formula. Probably low compared to compressors not designed to be quiet :)

AWESOME ! THANK YOU B for taking the time find the truth. So FAD is 56LPM as opposed to the stated 89LPM on the specs....as I suspected. So for compressors of this type we could conclude will at least 1 LPM per 8.6 watts of motor power...So if my paint gun needs up 360LPM I'm looking at 3KW/4hp. Thanks for the science and the truth! cheers Pete

So! after a year is the compressor still running good! I just hope the person in charge of putting on the stickers don't have a hand in building them. Did anyone notice the input sticker was upside-down as well?

Yep, still running good, though it should be mentioned I don't use it often. Mostly for topping off bike and car tires once in a while...

My only concern with these silent compressors is, that they are also of the "maintenance free" type. They use no oil in the piston. Thus friction must be an issue, especially after a few years. What's your experience?

Could you use a compressor like this to clean a computer? Probably not this one, it seems pretty hefty in price!

I wonder if you can make a standard compressor just as silent by balancing the moving parts and putting sound absorbing material and a big air filter on the intake.

+Hatagashira Balancing alone can't do much to a standard compressor (not that this compressor is far from standard). It looks as if the compressor has two large diameter pistons, but only a very short stroke, with the two pistons most likely being 180° out of phase. That's pretty much the only difference.
@brainiac75
@brainiac75 8 жыл бұрын
+Hatagashira It wouldn't be easy. Generally air compressors need a lot of cooling so packing them too much in sound absorbing materials wouldn't be a good idea.

Did the review say no oil? What mechanism does it use that doesn't require oil? A screw or pistons would need oil and I used to build vane compressors with magnesium vanes, great for high CFM, up to 128psi, but drank oil like a sponge.

Okay, so I have a question. This product seems to be marketed under different brands on ebay, with all similar specifications BUT the airflow. Mine is marketed at 45l/min, yours 89l/min! This is strange since the construction looks identical. So my check question is: How many seconds does it take your compressor to fill an empty (9l) tank? Regards, Erik
@brainiac75
@brainiac75 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Erik. I have tested my unit: From 0-8 bar took 1 minute 17 seconds. That's an average of 56 l/min over the different pressure loads. The specifictation max l/min for air compressors is like max watts for an amplifier. You need more details to really know what it means. Implotex has a graph of l/min at different pressure loads on their website: www.implotex.de/silent-air-compressor/480w-silent-air-kompressor-druckluftkompressor-nur-48db-oelfrei-implotex/a-664/ Thanks for watching my video. - Brian

Hi, i have a question: I never had a compressor so sorry if if my question sounds stupid. The time you can leave the compressor "ON" depends on the tank' volume or it can work H24/24 7/7?

Thank you for the good review of Implotex. Agreed about the leaded brass! We need lead - it is very important to industry. The uneducated whiners have villainized it however it is not dangerous if you follow simple precautions. Question - does the Implotex compressor use an oscillating permanent-magnet motor? I am guessing that it does not have a rotating motor and crankshaft? Did you investigate the mechanical mechanism by which it functions?
@brainiac75
@brainiac75 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. This compressor does have a rotating motor and crankshaft. But in stead of a single, fast-moving longthrow piston it uses two pistons moving opposite to each other - balancing each other out. By doubling the number of pistons it also appears to be able to have a shorter throw and run at a lower pace. Or maybe it's just the silence fooling my senses :)
