I’m starting seeds today in my RV! 😆 We are living full-time in a 5th wheel while we save up for our future farm and I can’t help but still try to garden even though it’s unconventional. I’m setting up grow lights in our loft area and we’ll see how it goes! 🙏🏼👩🏻🌾

Tip for lavender is getting a good stratification period. My lavender seeds went into the freezer end of December, then into the fridge in January I'll be taking them out the fridge this weekend to grow on, same for strawberry seeds

So when I decided to start gardening seriously about a year ago, I dove deep into the research around soil, in particular starting mix. I did a lot of trial and error until I figured out what garden soil mix I liked (peat moss, cow manure, worm castings, top soil, cheap potting soil ,which is mostly just comprised of what look like small wood shavings and trifecta+). That was relatively painless compared to the process of finding a good seed starting mix. I literally tried 10 different pre-made bags from the stores and online as well as different home made compositions and almost every single one of them left me underwhelmed. The seeds grew, but they were anything but robust. Often they would germinate really well and then just stop growing, or they'd grow super slowly, or they'd dampen off. I used a dampness measuring tool to ensure that I wasn't over or under watering and thus eliminate that factor and still, it was not leading to the results I wanted. Finally I figured out a mix and process that seems to works for me. I use coco coir, pearlite and vermiculite. I pass them all through a fine soil sifter and then rehydrate with boiling water (to kill the many molds and funguses I was fighting before). I let the mix cool down before planting my seeds in the already damp mix. I water from the top with a squirt gun until the seeds germinate, to ensure here is moisture on the seeds themselves and after that I only bottom water, and allow the tops to dry out completely so that mold and damping off issues are kept to a minimum. Once the first set of true leaves forms I use a small amount of organic liquid fertilizer about once every two weeks. So far, this has worked really well and I'm hopeful it will be the solution for me moving forward. I know a year doesn't seem like a lot if you're just growing seedlings for your two main growing seasons, but what I did was more than that, it was basically a year long science project LOL. My husband thinks I'm a bit mad, but thankfully he's a geeky science type as well LOL.
@karenm56813 жыл бұрын
Wow, Emma! Thanks for sharing the results of your seed starting soil deep dive. I’m happy to know this info! I tend to think of vermiculite and perlite as doing pretty much the same function in a soil mix...I was wondering if there’s a specific reason that both are necessary?
@reighngold3 жыл бұрын
@@karenm5681 Glad it was helpful. So the reason I use both vermiculite and pearlite is for water management in my mix. Vermiculite holds water and pearlite lets it drain. I found that if I used just pearlite I could barely keep on top of watering them, if I used just vermiculite they'd hold onto a bit too much water and I got some damping off and mold (I do tend to overwater) and if I used nothing, just coco coir, I would smother the plants (it would compact with watering and the seeds would start sprouting and then die, often before they even broke the soil.) I did try peat as well but it was about the same as coco coir. At the end of the day, I found a video by MI Gardener that mentioned the differences between vermiculite and pearlite and that was very helpful in allowing me to balance my mix. I have started some of my seeds for 2021 spring and I have been having good luck with this mix so far, hopefully it will continue to work for me. There are a ton of methods that work for folks and this is just what I've found works for me in my set-up with my issues. I hope it's helpful to you and I wish you good luck with your garden and plant starts!

I am taking the Floret online course and will be growing hundreds of thousands of flowers on my city lot, on all 4 sides of our house. Flower farming, here I come! 2021: Excited about all the flowers, but if I had to pick only one...Anemone. Or Sweet Peas, yes that’s it. Or Lisianthus, if I can get them to grow...Or Dahlias, yes, that’s the one. Maybe Roses. Peonies. Zinnias, Sunflowers. Snapdragons. Narcissus. Tulips. Lilies. Crown Imperial Fritillarias. Poppies. Cosmos. Rudbeckia. Eucalyptus. Or...whichever one I happen to be looking at. That’s my favourite one.

Make sure you put rosemary and lavendar in the fridge after you plant them for 30 days. They need to be stratified. I swear you will have great success after that. 1 to 5 ratio of vermiculite and peat moss makes a great seed starting mix. I use 1 gallon containers 5 part peat moss and 1 part vermiculite. If you are worried about fertilizer use the diluted serving of fish emulsion.

They use it for starting seeds too so I’m using it for my herbs to see how it goes. I love black gold mix though so you might give it a go since it is OMRI certified. Not sure if that complies for your market. Gary from rusted garden always says the hot water will kill off any bugs so I did that with this new mix and so far so good. Last year the gnats were going my husbands nose because I had all the plants in our room🤣🤣🤣 happy sowing Jill. Keep sharing your market experiences please. I live in 4b and need a good head start on some things or I end up with little to no harvest. I start my maters in the 1st- 2nd week of March. Otherwise, yea, I have tomato trees!

Thank you for your videos. I wanted to share my experience as a Texas Master Gardener, the ornamental kale is a winter plant to add to flower beds along with e.g. pansies. In Texas the ornamental kale is finished out with the heat in March, April or before. It might be different in Arkansas. Anyways, I just wanted to share the information with you. You might check with your areas. Good luck Happy Gardening! 😊

I can’t grow lavender either! And I’m almost embarrassed to say I can’t keep a Rosemary plant long enough to use it to cook! I direct planted Calendula into the garden and they were slow growing and very slow flowering. Yarrow however is one step down from mint! I have baby yarrow plants all through the garden! I’ve never started kale in pots. I only see in the ground. Collards I have no luck with sowing either way. I have always had to buy starts for collards. Space is a big deal for me too! I want to grow EVERYTHING!! Love this channel. I saw you on Roots and Refuge and so glad I did! Love watching your progress!

My fav 2020 ive never grown brassic before and they did well and I was so proud. Grew broccoli and cauliflower and cabbage all did well in the spring and my first time doing a fall garden. Also first time growing pumkins idk who was more excited me or the kiddo. That was so much fun. My green beans did amazing in the fall and loved canning. I was so grateful how my garden turned out it was amazing!! Still eating on some things I froze and canned. For 2021 still lil undecided we got so many cool varieties from ur seed swap we want to try plus what we typically grow. Need get game plan. Am going to try seed starting this year still trying to get it all together hopefully we can get out supplies for green house soon if not plan b lol. Right now I have seeds started in jugs outside in hopes my dog doesn't think its good chew toy. Need make space on the deck she can't get to some how. And trying garlic in pots for the first time bc never got dry enough to do a spot in the garden and I was afriad if planted wet it would rot. So we shall see. Good luck on all your flowers. My mom used work a green house back in the day so hopefully between me and her we can seed start lol.

Favorite plants in 2020 were my okra, lemon squash, and rutabaga. I’m most looking forward to growing blue butterfly peas, cucuzzi, and peppers in 2021. I have also tried and failed with lavender. This last time I tossed some seeds in my planter in hopes it might come up after the winter. I will keep trying though!

My favorite thing i grew last year was these peppers that cross pollinated. They were so sweet and medium spicy. I kept some of the seeds and am soooo excited to try growing them again. Also this year I am trying my hardest to grow parsnips. I just love them.

My favorite of 2020 was a Giant Marconi Red. I had Covid so couldn’t really care for it like I wanted, but the peppers I got off of it were awesome and had to be propped up (small plant, huge peppers).

Loving your videos, informative and inspiring. Also, you look so much like my best friend that passed years ago and your voice reminds me of Dolly Parton. Just thought I'd mention, but really enjoying your videos.

Calendula does fabulous for me as a transplant. I just started some herbs & flowers too! It’s always so exciting to sow the first seeds of the year. My favorite thing from 2020 was probably my Kajari melons. They just did crazy well, were so beautiful on the trellis & tasted amazing. This year I’m also adding cut flowers, so I’m really excited about that but I’m also really excited about planting elderberry.

Unusual as it seems is my borage was really amazing for me in 2020. Their flowers are so gourgeous and the bee's LOVED them. I am excite to try some new tomato varieties. My plants were beautiful in 2020 but the bounty was not good!! a few of the fruit on each but not prolific so....all that to say will be planting and hoping for better tomato crops for both canning and fresh eating.

It was fun to plant along with you today. 😊Dahlias we’re my fave for 2020. This year I’m excited to expand my dahlias and try Iceland poppies. 🥰 My biggest tip for you on dahlias is to do your research on how much / how often to water based on your soil type and growing location. They like to be deeply watered but if they are too wet the tubers will mold. Oh and make sure you pinch when they’re you g and cut deep stems when you’re harvesting. Those are essential. Erin (floret) has great insight like you were mentioning on varieties and general info.

Rainbow Swiss Chard was my favorite for 2020. It is now a garden staple for me! I’m looking forward to growing dahlias for 2021 as well. Especially from seed and learning more about breeding them!
