We have a huge outdoor/indoor rabbit habitat and we use chicken fencing on the bottom of the outdoor portion, putting soil about 6 inches on top. They dig down to the underground fencing, then give up! Plus, other critters that would like to have rabbit for dinner can't get in, though they've tried digging under the side wall fencing...start digging back up to get INSIDE the rabbits area...but hit the chicken fencing and can't get thru it! It's work brilliantly for us!

The chicken wire is strong enough against predators? I thought you needed to bury hardware cloth for the stronger predators? I used the hardware cloth for my quail run, buried it in about 3" of soil, then another 2-3" of pine shavings and using deep litter method.
@royalicing8603
@royalicing8603 3 жыл бұрын
@@h.s.6269 It's worked so far! There have been critters that have tried, but all of them gave up when they hit the fencing. I woukd imagine that something big like a coyote or wolf would get thru with little effort, but we don't have any predictors like that where we are. I'm sure that hardware cloth would be best, but we didn't have any on hand at the time we built our structure and its held up so far! *Fingers crossed* 😄 Its been 6 years, gonna pray for 6 more!

I planted two small packets of zinnia seeds. I have been waiting for them to bloom but before they did a deer came and ate the tops off quite a few of them. He/she also ate some roses that just bloomed. I told myself that farmers deal with these things all the time so I got through. Then now I have a couple of blooms! So pretty. I’m hoping he doesn’t come back through for another snack. 😊

I have colony girls if they are put in a neutral territory they will do pecking order stuff and will get over it and actually work together (my girls have chased off weasels.... they are tough cookies. After they killed one of my males that broke out of his hutch into their pen I nicknames them the Amazons). Colony raising does take a lot of time to implement so I totally understand you guys not having the time with everything you are doing. The key to introducing adult females to each other is time, observation, neutral territory to introduce them, and multiple food and water sources. I keep my males seperare but I am implimenting pens inside the initial pen since seeing Saffron and Honey Homestead doing it (another rabbit owner in Maine not super far from me only like a couple hours away). This lets the males have socializing time with the other buns but they cant get them preggo from the pen. It also makes introducing the females to them later easier and them more receptive to breeding with them. Like you said we want our animals to have a good life. I hate that my boys are in hutches and my girls get to be loose because they dont typically go for the kill with other girls its more like gang initiation. Girls being put together in hutches is way harder because the tiny space is their whole world and now you are basically saying ok now you have to share that so that is when it gets deadly more often. With the space of a large pen they become more receptive to sharing.

I've heard bunnies can breed through fences like goats can. Is that a concern in your setup?
@SunnieDIY
@SunnieDIY 3 жыл бұрын
@@h.s.6269 never happened yet and I have determined bunnies. Maybe if the fence holes were 2x3? They are 1" though. Its worth asking the people who say it happened what their set up is like. Only time weve had these accidental births is due to actual break outs from hutches to the colony pen. My boys are moving to smaller pens within the pen (1" holes).

Having grass growing in a static colony is not the best idea if you want to avoid all your rabbits dying from parasites. We've had a meat rabbit colony for years, and to avoid coccidiosis and other parasite issues we've found you either need to use bedding, scrape poop off a bare dirt floor, or move any rabbits that have access to pasture. Eating soiled greens will quickly lead to coccidiosis issues, especially for kits (we have learded the hard way).
