I played this game on '97, loved the gameplay but was too young to understand the plot, now I'm replaying it on iOS and omg this game is near perfection, and so many elements taken from Beserk

Really great and insightful video. The only thing is you said multiple times that Ramza's father was the late King, when he was not. The late king was Omdalia III and he died the year after the end of the 50 years war from illness and left behind his infant son Orinas. and Balbanes Beoulve was just the head of the Beoulves, the family that served as defenders of the royal family for generations. Them both dying of "illness" (which we both well know why Balbanes really died) may be what got you mixed up. This was truly a joy to watch you break down, and I can tell you've put heaps of effort into it.

The Beoulves were truly the Starks of Ivalice. Staunch and noble defenders of the crown. Man, this game is such a beautiful masterpiece. Time to replay it for the umpteenth time.

Dude that was awesome. One of my favorite games ever. I wanted to say, when fighting Belias the second time, for the first time, yeah was totally destroyed. But you can just turn all your chars into lancers and just keep jumping to attack, evading everything while causing decent damage and the fight is pretty easy that way.

Very excellent retrospective! As a fellow child of the pre-internet guidebook dark ages the Genova's Delicatessen bit really took me back. Now I want to play Tactics again, and to be honest I wouldn't mind one of those sandwiches too. Thanks for the video. Looking forward to more stuff from you.

I love the deep dive into my favorite game! Fantastic work! I love the inclusion of the new cutscenes as I think they were masterfully done. As a note. I think you're confusing some of your lore. Spoilers ahead: Balbanes/Barbanath Beoulve was not the King. He is also not Ramza's adoptive father, he's his father by blood. Also, Ovelia was adopted, but she was always royalty. She is actually the half-sister of the King. When it looked like the king would not produce an heir (due to her two children conveniently dying), he adopted his half-sister as his daughter so that she would inherent the throne. But after the adoption, the queen was able to have another baby. A little boy. The king has been severely ill and bedridden for a very long time at this point and people question if the king was actually the father of this baby. After the King's death, different political factions favored different heirs. And thus began the War of the Lions. Then of course we find out that the Ovelia we know is not actually Ovelia, but a commoner replacement switched out for Ovelia as a young child (before her memory as she thinks she was born a princess) after the real Ovelia's death. Seriously, love the deep dive! I've poured so many hours into this game and love any chance I get to see another person's take on it. Edit as I continue watching: Because of the reasons above, Ovelia and Ramza are not related. 2nd Edit: When you read the Scriptures of Germonique, they always refer to Ajora as a man and it's pretty widely accepted that Ajora was a man. But there are a few instances where this gets confused.

Dorter really is such a turning point for the first part of any run. Either you do terribly, losing half your party and have to spend every penny you earn hiring Chemists and buying Potions to try to keep your 2 good units alive (one of which is Delita), until you unlock Agrias and her subordinates. You could also totally dominate them, and your existing units will snowball. Or you could have minimal casualties

that's why you just need to be level 30 like every run I end up doing -- I say, 'not this time; this time I'll play as intended', then 15 hours later, I'm a Ninja/Bard lol

For me, it's usually TPK or complete victory at Dorter. But man, that was the first fight where I tasted the bitterness of defeat in this game. That is the mission where I learned it's a huge mistake to just do the story, and not grind at least a couple levels.

This is good stuff. Surprising how good the quality of the video is considering you have no subs and no views. I'll sub to you. Perhaps consider doing your next video on Front Mission 3. That's a tactical squaresoft RPG I also grew up playing and love that barely ever gets talked about on youtube.

it's between front mission or super mario rpg. i still have the back half of tactics to do, but story wise, it's pretty straight forward and not so interesting, so i may do a new game first, then go back to part 2 of tactics.

Really enjoyed the combination of recap, game strategy, story commentary, and personal vignettes! E: If/When you play it again, you might want to try the Tweak mod. It has a lot of QOL improvements, including player control of all characters. The Riovanes Roof fight can still be a massive PITA, but it's much less painful when you control Rafa!

Just have to correct you here, but Ramza’s father wasn’t the king; he was just a high ranking noble. However the king did adopt Ovelia but he wasn't the same person as Lord Beoulve.

When i first bought the game back in 1997, i found it too complex and slow. Fast forward to 2016, i accidentally found it on Google Play and decided to purchase and give it a try again. It's now one of my favorite game of all time.
