It's not wholly inaccurate. The fact is that The Beatles were offered an audition at EMI because George Martin liked what he heard on the tape Epstein gave him of The Beatles' recording session at Decca. He didn't say to Eppy anything bad about the drumming on that tape whatsoever. Martin's only issue with Pete arose at the EMI audition, on the song, "Love Me Do". Pete struggled with it badly, as you may've heard on Anthology. But there's a reason for that. Martin listened to the lads play the song and abruptly changed the arrangement, ditching the skip-beat that Pete had been playing the song with all along at the clubs. It threw Pete off, and even Paul was livid because it threw off his vocals. EMI sound engineer, Norman Smith, who worked that session said, *"The problem wasn't with how Pete was playing, but rather with what he was being asked to play with the new arrangement".* Bottom line is, EMI signed The Beatles in late June of '62, when Pete Best was still their drummer, and no one at EMI had any knowledge he would be sacked before their first official recording session on September 4th. When Ringo showed up that day with the band in place of Pete, George Martin was shocked. Martin recalled, *"I was surprised to learn that Pete had been replaced, as he was the best-looking and most marketable member of the band."* -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I saw this at the time it was on BBC2 back in '85 so this was the first time I saw Pete Best being interviewed. Admittedly, the manner of his sacking was appalling- the other three should have spoken to him face to face. That said, Ringo was a better drummer and a perfect fit personality wise. It's plainly obvious from this interview why Pete didn't fit in, he comes across as dull and boring- he would never have fitted in with The Fab Four image. Jealousy may have been an issue with the other three but that would have been minor compared to the more obvious reasons, as mentioned above. To sum up: he was in the band for two years but he was NEVER a Beatle. As George Harrison once said, Ringo ALWAYS WAS a Beatle- it's just that his official entry into the story (or film, as Harrison put it) came at a later time.

This is just an historical record now , but after studying the build up of the band from various sources it does seem a shame that he was "dropped" at such a pivotal turning point in their career. If one studies the recording of Love me Do it is quite apparent that in the early 1960s record labels mainly used "session" drummers ie Carlo Little , Phil Seaman , Andy White to name a few to "lay" down tracks. Case in point Ringo not being used on several early releases. Its a pity Sir Paul and Mr Starr dont set the record straight as this historical episode is an integral part of Beatle history. Actually John and Paul had wanted Ringo in the band the moment they saw him in Hamburg in 1960, before the Beatles really had any attention from the fans. But Ringo was in a much more popular band at the time and they had just hired Pete. So I agree it had nothing to do with jealousy. They just thought Ringo was the better drummer for the Beatles.
@terranova224 жыл бұрын
Of course they wanted Ringo from the beginning since he was a professional, and he also fit in with the personality of the group. But don't discount the jealousy bit. Paul McCartney's dad chided him (Pete Best) on night after a concert, for not "sharing the attention" that was getting after a concert. You can imagine that the creative forces in the group might not be too happy about a straight man getting more attention, when he was completely replaceable, unlike the others. Jealousy may not have been the primary reason, but it sure didn't help his cause to be able to remain a Beatle . . .

I read a biography on the Beatles back in the sixties and that's when I first heard of Pete Best and his story. I was a teenager myself at the time and thought, how sad this must have been for Pete. Then I began to contemplate what I might have done in his place and at that age. I am not physically a big guy, I was attending military school at the time I read this biography, and I am of Italian and Irish descent. Military school can be a tough place with a lot of “jocks” and I didn’t want to be in any of their cross hairs. So, without going into too much detail, I had access to the commandant’s office, paper work, information, and week end town passes. I befriended two of the larger, meaner “goons” that were football players, had girlfriends in town, and also had disciplinary issues disqualifying them from getting town passes every now and then. I demonstrated to them I could make this go away and in return I wanted them to keep everyone else off my back. It worked great! I love it when a plan comes together. So now back to Pete Best. Back in those days in Liverpool there was a type of guy described as a “Teddy Boy”, goons. I would have walked right out of Brian’s office after he given me the bad news and rounded up two “Teddy Boys”, cut a deal with them, and have them explain to Ringo why he did not want to take the job and then keep the two “Teds” on retainer for a while just in case.

In spite of Pete's drumming talent, or lack of it, or whatever the reason or reasons he got fired, I just can't help but feel bad for Pete. I mean, getting fired from the most iconic, legendary band of all time in history just as that band was on the cusp of their international fame and fortune. It's not like he got fired from a band that would go on to have some pretty good success only to fade into obscurity a few years later down the road. He got fired from THE BEATLES, for crying out loud. A legendary band whose name, music, fame, and fandom still lives on, even a lot of decades after it broke up. Pete eventually went on to a 20 year career as a civil servant, helping unemployed people find jobs. He was still employed as such at the time of this interview and would retire a few years later. I know how many times he's said he's perfectly fine and happy with how things turned out for him. But still, I can't help but think there just had to be a few times when he'd be sitting in his civil service office, filling out paperwork, dealing with the daily drudgery of his 9-5 job, and think about The Beatles. How much more money they're pulling in than him (I would think they earned more in one day than Pete earned in a lot of years). How much fame they have/had. How they're living in the lap of luxury while he's struggling to pay the rent and put food on the table for his family. If I were in Pete's shoes back then, I know that's what I'd be occasionally thinking about while sitting in my office.

It’s easy to say in the comments below, the boys should have told him rather than leave it to Brian. Unfortunately it is a difficult thing to do.. I was in a covers band for the past 6 years. We weren’t happy with our drummer because he played too loud and wasn’t able to play contemporary beats. He didn’t grow musically like the rest of us and held the band back. It’s difficult to tell people. We replaced him and he found out about his replacement from fan photos on Facebook. None of the members had courage to tell him after the event and I was given the task. He slammed phone in my face and then have never seen him again. So it’s not an easy thing to do. Anyway, regarding Pete Best, just listen to the Decca Tapes. The vocals, guitars and harmonies are magic. The drumming is pretty annoying. Listen to Till there You. Not in sync with guitars. The 4 beat kick drum doesn’t gel and it’s quite annoying. Compare this to Beatles at Star Club with Ringo. The band gels.

Lucky you, having a Liverpool perspective. I've come to believe that the explanation in "Best of the Beatles" is the correct one. That would be that someone at the 1st "Love Me Do" sessions made an offhand remark, that manager Esptein, already having been rejected 3 times by record labels in '62, panicked. Nothing could go wrong so Starkey was brought in. Know this absolute fact. Ringo's voice RUINED "Help from My Friends" & "Yellow Sub". Ringo a great comic actor but knew in his soul.

I BELIEVE THE BEATLES DID NOT WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE PETE'S MUM MONA ! THE FIRST LADY OF THE BEATLES AND ROCK AND ROLL.

Pete seems like a nice guy. But he sure didn’t have the personality of the other three or Ringo. I’m sure there is some credibility to the jealousy. But. Look how it turned out. Hard to believe it would’ve been the same with Pete back there. And, no way it would’ve been better…how could it have been?

Mona was a factor, not the only one though. She was their defacto manager at one time and still kept poking her nose in.

The Beatles Jealousy was well founded. The band had enormous talent and Pete did not. What did he do without them? Pete had become a distraction and didn't have the chemistry to fit in like Ringo did, everyone knew that including Brian and George Martin. Still, I feel bad to Pete, because the band should have acted like men and broke the news to Pete together.

So the girls stopped screaming after Pete Worst was kicked? Beatlemania died with Pete's sacking? Sure bro, sure. They fired him because he was a talentless wreck on drums, and was lazy, basically a leecher.

Pete Best received between 1 - 4 million pounds a very nice tidy sum. Just to add further comment Pete Best was used and disregarded, if they was honest they should have told him he was only a temp till they found someone permanent at least then it would have been his choice if he wanted to waste 2 years of his life roughing it in hamburg with a crap wage.

I've always found Pete to be a decent, if dull guy. I would say that even a cursory listen to the Anthology reveals that Pete was an inferior drummer...Ringo was massively superior, and his personality was a better fit. Sorry, Pete: you weren't a good enough musician.

i dont know man if i were in the beatles for a couple of years i'd say it was a nice little trip and then i would try to have a life without comparing myself to a pop culture monster who used to play music in my mothers pubs when they were teens more than a half century ago theres something insane about him especially now that hes an old and badly aged man saying that they were jealous of him because of him-even if that was true when they were 18 or 20 (his looks didnt last...) back in the stone age... but hey thats just me

+Νικ Τζάκολσον He is part of the making of the beatles brand and has every right to profit from it! He was not a crap drummer, The Beatles were topping polls all over the shop, no one was saying "that's the group with a shit drummer".

George martin said his drumming was bad .that's when they decided they needed another one if they where to get ahead .ringo filled in for them in hamburg when pete was ill & that's when john decided to ask him to join them after George martins comments

Be aware of the Riks videos where he makes fun of various stars situations, however your not allowed to say anything negative as its said they are professionals and making any comments they think are not just will be blocked based on what they think is politically correct. Using the word stupid is not allowed, saying that the subject is acting like an idiot is not allowed. I was blocked over a very lame video I thought daft on the subject matter if I didn't say I was sorry! Only in N Korea

A slight stretch, possibly but I felt people like David Letterman and Jay Leno would never dare to set such a trap on Sir Paul. They buddy up to their idols and cow the the Ruling Class. I did note that you 've seen fit to comment to Muslim stuff. I would say "Bravo!". Due to a freak occurrence, I've developed quite an interest in the "Biblical times", especially the "C.E." period. Much was omitted from the Christian Bible intentionally or otherwise.
