This episode is my favorite of the "Kathy Bates" storyline. She is a power house! In this episode she goes from intimating scary boss, to loving compassionate shoulder for Michael. I think it was all to get what she wanted, but hey, win, win, win.

I must admit, I think you're dead wrong about Jo manipulating Michael. I think she's capable of it, sure, but that's not how I read the scene. In fact, in your play by play, I actually got a little emotional. Michael's greatest strength as a salesman and as a person is his vulnerability, his inability to be anything but himself. That's what was on display in his conversation with Jo, and I think she picked up on that. And rather than continue the interrogation, she did what many potential clients do when faced with that same vulnerability: she was encouraged to let her walls down in return. I think the best evidence in defense of my thesis is her sorta-promise to bring Holly back. Sure, maybe it's something she did to reward a manipulated employee for doing what she wants. But I think it's a much sweeter resolution to imagine that she's paying him back for the chance to open up. I think that, even if they fall short, season finales at least always intend to pull out all the feels.

I agree with this. She is a smart businesswoman, and I'm sure she knew she'd get something out of it, but that doesn't mean she didn't mean the nice gesture.

The way the episode plays out it feels like the culmination of Joe’s character, she’s this large-and-in-charge woman who doesn’t put up with any bullshit for the people that work for her, as she tries to intimidate and scare Micheal into telling her what she wants to know. But when Micheal shows his true character as a genuine and caring person she’s able to drop this persona she’s made. Joe doesn’t have to bully Micheal to get the information out of him and in the end she never does. She finally has a heart-to-heart with someone she works with and to show that she, like Micheal, really does care she promises to send Holly back. I really liked seeing Joe open up in this episode and it feels like a great moment for her character.
@LowellDylan2 жыл бұрын
but it's hard to get us to understand what Jo is thinking or feeling because her character isn't given enough time to develop and become a well-understood character like everyone else in the office. I love Cathy Bates and they performance here it great, but they shouldn't done more with her because all we get to see basically is her personality while interacting with people around the office. we know nothing about her or 'what makes her tick', as the cool kids would say.

A bit of fun trivia you didn’t mention. When Dwight tells his agent to make an offer for the building he says “…1725 Slough Avenue” which I believe is a reference to the city where the British version of The Office takes place.

I think this is a great episode. In the binge watch era it never occurs to me that it’s a finale. The only time I notice finales is usually the earlier seasons or the drop of “we made this in case it ends up being the last episode of the show” episodes
@disco.heaven2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t know Whistleblower was a finale until he told me. If i was to guess the season 6 finale I would be wrong, which is the main point of this video. This episode does not feel like a finale, it feels like the end of a multi episode arc though the audience was unaware of the setup. The printer episode seemed like a one off joke and became the topic of a whole another episode’s A plot, it wasn’t significant. Season 5 has the Michael Scott Paper Company and season 7 had the Di’Angelo wrap up, season 6 falls into a limbo stage because nothing truly significant occurs unlike Dunder Mifflin being sold and Michael’s replacement almost dying.
@Sindragozer2 жыл бұрын
I feel like when they said Dunder Mifflin was going under and being sold, that they implied that Scranton was the only branch left. Especially since they said Michael was the highest ranking person at Dunder Mifflin. So it's weird that the Nashua branch still exists for Holly to come back from. It's late so I'm sure I'm missing something, i was just thinking about that and thought it was odd.

I get we're supposed to be against Andy, but while he probably should have gone to a government consumer safety voard or something instead of the press immediately, aren't we not supposed to be against people revealing when powerful people and entities are doing bad things? @@overdrive7349 but they were idiots. The printers really did catch fire. Incidently, I don't have Peacock, but I heard in a review of the Superfan cuts that a deleted scene from this episode is Michael Scott telling Jo, from one manager to another, that she needs to take responsibility for the fact that her company was buying bargain basement printers that were poorly made and dangerous. I actually haven't been a big fan of the SuperFan cuts overall (most cut scenes belong on the cutting room floor), but I wanna see that one as it sounds like a way better version of what is probably the least memorable season finale of the series.

The ranking system. How can something be expressly created for the purpose of objective valuation, yet be so completely SUBjective!? In grade school, 70% was one point above failure. Yet on the Mulverine scale, it represents just three points shy of perfection! This got me thinking, Chris: Maybe most Office reviewers are working on the old Archdiocesan grading system? That is, not a 1-10 in the ‘common’ sense, where a 5 is considered average. (After all, most American men rank themselves a 7, so clearly there must be variations here..) To Office fans, the first half of the scale -the 0-50% half- is moot, as clearly no episode could be a failure (This IS the Office, after all!). So in reality the scale would be comprised solely of the numerals 6-10. A five-point scale that just happens to begin at 6. It follows, then, that a 7 of (UP TO) 10 would be comparable to a 2 out of a possible 5. Which may be a lot more fitting in the Mulveverse..?
