I bought this machine in 1973, when my youngest daughter was just one. Paid $25, in cabinet. I have sewn countless projects on this machine, including over 20 quilts. It's a workhorse and will sew through an amazing amounts of layers or even sail cloth. I have a much newer machine, but find myself always using this one. Luckily, I have a local man who services it once a year for me. Anyone who owns one of these is lucky.

Wow. You've been using this machine for over 46 years now and it was already at least 20 years old when you got it. So happy to hear you found someone who can service this machine for you. The idea of maintenance and or service for consumer items is almost a foreign concept for most people today since almost nothing we purchase is designed to last long enough to even require service. Your description is a true testament to the quality and power of these machines. I plan on making a new video series on these machines and just bought ("Rescued") one and am looking forward to giving mine a full overhaul and showcasing it soon. Thanks so much for sharing your own machine story!!

I bought mine in the later 1970s for around 100 dollars. It had already been serviced and came with a very unusual art deco sort of cabinet table. Also came with endless presser feet and attachments. Skip to 2023, machine still works great. Looking for motor brushes even though they are still functional.

Thanks for your videos - my daughter picked up one of these with stand for $24 at the thrift store. All she wanted was the stand to mount a small machine she already had in - but after finding your videos we serviced the white - cleaned, lubricated and replaced the two rubber friction wheels - followed your directions and ended up with a really awesome machine! This thing really handles anything we'll ever need to sew - and has an amazing feed and stitch consistency - much better than any of the modern machines we own. Couldn't (wouldn't) have done it without your videos - thanks again!

Thank you Robert and thanks for sharing. Yes, the quality back then was amazing. So much so that all these years later, the machine will still perform with maintenance. The Rotary style hook helps these machines for stitches that were the equal of Singer's finest machines at the time.

Hi. thanks for writing. I can understand why you should use caution when finding someone to work on your machine. Many current day sewing stores are not interested in working on old machines. Sometimes because they are in the business of selling newer machines and sometimes, they will assume that parts are not available. (not true). I would suggest searching online for someone (maybe your local Craigslist) for folks that work on older machines, or perhaps a fabric store there might know of someone. Another option might be to try to see if you can service it yourself. The most common cause of stitch "loops" as I think you described is due to tension issues. Try adjusting the tension on your tension dial first. I normally suggest that sewers don't adjust bobbin case tension unless absolutely necessary. Another thing to try is to install a new needle and follow your thread path very closely and accurately. If you don't thread the machine exactly as it was designed for and also , if your needle is not installed correctly, this can have a major impact on your tension even when your tension dial is set fine. This really is the most common cause and I notice that people tend to have the most trouble after changing thread or needles. They might not sew often and its easy to forget or miss something in threading the machine etc. I know this myself since I work on so many different machines each of which threads slightly differently. Try these things and see if that helps. There are also youtube videos by others that discuss threading. You are so fortunate to have the machine that was your Mom's. All the best

Thank you for putting together this very informative video. I just discovered a White sewing machine that belonged to my mother in her garage. At first glance, I just assumed it was a nice wooden end table but was surprised that there was a foot pedal coming from it. Although it was carefully put away it does show signs of age. The power cord is frayed, the rubber parts look stiff and there were cobwebs around the machine. I also found a little red owner's manual in the cabinet drawer and saw that it had my grandmother's handwriting on it. So obviously it was passed down to my mom. I am so impressed with the look of this thing, it's heavy-duty! Machined finish, brown in color and with a solid feel. Steampunk is a good description. I did take a chance and plugged it in. It does turn on, but I did not run it. I'm torn as to what to do with this sewing machine. I can't use it but I'm sure there must be someone out there who would want to tinker with it and restore it and actually put it to good use. Could you point me in the right direction? I would not charge a penny for it and be happy if it could find a new home. Thank you.

Thank you for writing Maria. What a wonderful family heirloom. Its not uncommon for machines such as yours to require some replacement of parts like bobbin winder tires and cords. I would definitely work to find a home for the machine. There are various places you can post the machine such as Craigslist, Kijiji, and Facebook which has a Marketplace section you can post at. If clean off some of the dust and take a few photos and post, you should find someone who will "Adopt" the machine and give it the maintenance it needs to work beautifully again.

+anthony matousek Hello Anthony. Just now getting to your comment as I check in here only when posting new videos. Many people often think that these machines (White Rotarys, Kenmore Rotarys, Domestic Rotarys etc) are broken when often it is the threading of upper thread or bobbin thread that can cause issues. Trouble is, White did not illustrate their manuals nearly as well as they engineered their machines!!!! You can get a PDF of the manual online if you dont have one, but you may want to check other KZbin videos. I will consider making a video of this. Its VERY hard to see on camera because the bobbin cases are so small ,but let me figure out a way to illustrate with good lighting etc. Threading a Rotary bobbin case from any of the brands of this type of machine is a bit odd the first time you do it. But so many of these machines were sold that it is doable obviously. I think you have a great machine for you and your daughter to learn sewing. The stitch quality and power of these is amazing. Another thing I may want to illustrate on video is the threading of the upper tension which is not exactly intuitive either. Once you get it set up and running, the magnificent stitch that it makes will make up for all the frustration, I can tell you that much. Oh, and they are SUPER STRONG sewers. The rubber pulley system they use had incredible torque and you can stitch everything from silk hankercheifs to heavy canvas. I will try to get something up soon. Stay tuned and thanks for writing.

Thank you for these videos! I brought home my Mom's machine which is just like this, and it took a morning of watching your videos to get up the nerve to clean and oil it so I could use it! Hello my friend bought this exact same machine and cabinet, but it’s missing the pedal she says. You mentioned this rotary system. Does that mean there is no pedal? Please advise. Thank you
@VintageSewingMachineGarage2 жыл бұрын
The term "Rotary" refers to the shuttle and hook system used to form its lovely stitches. This is not related to the pedal question. For machines like this that came in carry cases, there would have been a pedal included. However, for cabinet versions, a large majority were sold with knee lever controls. The customer could order one in a table with a pedal, but most ( I assume), that were on display at dealers must have been set up for knee control. Its common for people today to assume that the pedal is missing when the speed control is actually there. It is a small metal box most often located just inside the table facing the front but out of site. There is a speed control lever mechanism that has a paddle shaped lever that hangs down (though sometimes it is folded up and out of sight). Check yours to see if its there which is also a good time to inspect the wiring for any damage or crumbling insulation. FYI, these setups can be changed to foot pedal if desired. The next time I have one, I will try to remember to make a video on how to convert them. Oh, and the good news is that new reproduction cords and generic foot pedals can be purchased for these at fairly low cost.

I was gifted one by a friend of mine. Motor runs, but needle doesn't go up and down
@VintageSewingMachineGarage5 жыл бұрын
Hi Heather. There can be a number of causes for the needle bar not moving. If there are no thread tangles in the bobbin case area, then another area to check is the rubber wheel/pullley that the motor uses to engage the hand wheel. These will sometimes dry rot or develop flat spots from the machine having sat dormant. If that is the cause, replacements can be found on sites like Ebay. The machine may also require cleaning and or relubricating. There can be other possible issues, but you might try checking these to begin with. Also, if you have a user's manual, review that as well for troubleshooting tips. Manuals can be purchased or found for free online as PDFs also.

Thanks for this marvelous video! I own this exact machine, in the cabinet and it still runs beautifully. It was my mother's and I learned to sew on it some 50+ years ago. It's a treasure to me and I'd like to have it restored because the stitch length dials have crumbled and broken off, plus since it hasn't been used in over 20 years it needs a good overhall. I live in Chester County PA and I'm hoping you know somewhere in my area where I could take it. I can't tell from your video if your table is like mine but my mine has a metal cable that lowers the machine inside the table when you lift up the left hand extension. The cable is a little stretched so the extension sags. Is it easy to tighten the cable or should I leave that to a service technician? I hope you'll respond; I'd really love to refurbish this and use it again. I have two other more modern machines but as you've said, there's a lot this machine can do that newer ones won't handle well. Thanks in advance for your reply. S.G.

If yours in installed into a table as many of these were, you likely have a speed controller built into the the table with a drop down lever (it should be able to swivel up or down) and when in the down position, you can apply power with your knee. Most were set up for right knee but there may have been an option for left side. Take a look under the front of your sewing table if there is one and you 'should' likely find the kneel controller. If there is no kneel controller, then you can get foot pedals and reproduction cords that can also work.

Hi, I was hoping you would be kind enough to answer a question for me. I was lucky enough to get a White 77 (in a wooden cabinet) for $10 at Savers and it works! Well, the motor runs anyway. But I feel silly, because the motor won't drive the wheel. The rubber friction drive wheel comes about within 1/8 of an inch of the wheel. I don't know if the rubber is supposed to be super thick, but it doesn't look or feel worn out and there is an extra one that looks the same. Is there something obvious I am missing? Thank you in advance for any advice.
@VintageSewingMachineGarage7 жыл бұрын
Hi. Those machines are wonderful and often overlooked. The way it works is that their is a large spring attached to the motor that pushes it against the main Hand Wheel and it contacts via that rubber pulley. Check to see if someone has put a shim or something to prevent the rubber from touching when not in use. Or the spring on the motor might need adjustment. The rubber pulleys develop bald spots if they are left to rest against the hand wheel. If yours is dented or bald in one area, it can prevent good operation. If needed, you can get replacements online very cheaply and are easy to replace. I suspect your issues are wither with that rubber pulley or the main spring that sits under the motor that is designed to push the rubber pulley against the hand wheel. Also note that These machines were all made by the White company no matter what label they are under and that the hand wheel moves OPPOSITE direction from most machines like Singers. The hand wheel rotates AWAY from you on your machine. Most machines have the wheel rotating towards you for sewing. Good luck

Hello Rosa. Its wonderful that your machine is a family heirloom! My best suggestion would be for you to refer to the user manual for the machine if you have it. Or, if it was lost, you can get manuals for these models in PDF form online. The manuals are good for showing how to maintain the machine with things such as oiling etc. FYI, I would suggest storing any sewing machine indoors. Spaces like garages, basements, and attics are very rough environments for sewing machines. They are easier to maintain and require much less maintenance when they are stored in climate controlled spaces indoors.

Restoration is not all that bad as vintage machines go. This model had grease wicks and grease reservoirs on the motor that should be serviced and you can easily access the motor brushes which should be checked for wear. Its also easy to clean the motor commutator thru the brush opening. Always check electrical cords for wear as many, but not all, will need replacing. You can get a new replacement for this machine's cord online. They run about $15 or so. Other areas that need attention are general cleaning and lubrication of moving parts and the feed dog area and bobbin case should be cleaned.

Very interesting but what a horribly ugly machine! So much so that I actually would want one, strangely enough. Do you happen to know if they ever exported to Europe?

Hello Roan. I am not aware if they were exported outside North America or not. The US Market was very large during the time of production of these. Also, after the war, many countries had protectionist tariffs against American products so they could rebuild their own industries after the war. Singer was different since they had factories in Europe and the UK.
