She looked absolutely stunning in this scene. That dress is simply iconic. Edith Head certainly outdid herself here, but Rosie was the inspiration for it - her neck, shoulders and back were perfection and EH created this dress to showcase them. Stunning girl, stunning dress, stunningly beautiful voice.

Absolutely love Rosemary! One of the best songs she ever sang. What a great performance!

George Chakiris is clearly visible here at 1:27 - the problem is, he was also in the "Minstrel Number" earlier in the film. That was supposed to be in Vermont, and now here he is in New York City. When this film was newly released he was an unknown, so probably nobody at the time spotted this lapse in continuity, but it's obvious today.

I do agree with you. It's a very good number and the best from WHITE CHRISTMAS. Rosemary Clooney is very beautiful and her voice is quite extraordinary. And George Chakiris among the dancers. Thanks for posting this.

I was a fan and was hooked when I heard her some 63 years ago, and I'm still a fan. This scene remains a classic, and Rosey looked stunning and was obviously in her usual good voice. Edith Head designed the dress with the big broach on her backside as sort of a joke with her sense of human, but it was a classic look for Rosey. She could sing the ballads with the best of them; in fact, she was compared to Sinatra with her phrasing. She was and will remain one of the best.

The first time I saw this, I almost didn’t recognize George Chakiris as one of the back up dancers! Boy he was so young when he did White Christmas and West Side Story

Rosie, you left movies much too soon. Thanks for the memories and a knockout musical performance in "White Christmas".
@jackanthony9765 жыл бұрын
Rosie did not leave movies on her own. She was on a short term contract with Paramount and they decided not to renew. The executives felt that she was too masculine and that her success in White Christmas was a fluke as big budget musicals were on the decline by 1954.

The image of Rosemary standing arrow-straight in that gown, before slightly softening her posture, has been an enduring one since first seeing "White Christmas" at a Christmas time limited re-release. I was eight-years old then in '64. The experience was akin to imprinting on a hatchling. Her voice draws a certain pathos from inside her character's thwarted ambitions, stopping the show. That I can recall the experience, with crystal clarity, nearly 50 years after the fact, is comforting to me.

Rosemay Clooney singing "Love, You Didn't Do Right by Me" in "White Christmas" is my favorite scene. She was at her peak and the scene is magnificently staged. She and the male dancer make a kaleidoscope of hour glass figures in silhouette with their bodies and moves.

George Chakiris is also seen in the 'Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend' number, ( w/ Marilyn Monroe, from 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes', 1953 ), He's part of the dark, dashing, dance ensemble, though there is silver applied to temples of his hair, most likely to have him appear more mature than he was at time of filming.
@Rossbach213 жыл бұрын
@SopranoOfTheNight - Yes, this was 20-year-old George Chakiris in the 1954 film, White Christmas. He appeared as Bernardo, leader of the Sharks, in the 1961 film rendition of Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story.

She could sing this song without accompaniment. Her pitch and sense of rhythm are born in her. There's segments of her old TV shows stuff she sings, that sound better and explore her range a bit. more.than any of her "hits" ever did. Something flowing out of her can hold people in a certain way. Calm and clear. Her acting with Crosby is natural and affectionate. This is fun watching these clips and wondering why they are so lasting. Good writing and good performers. Thank you

Edith Head nails it once again....in concert with the song,staging and the very sultry voice of the very sexy Ms.Clooney this number effortlessly captures the essence of the Golden Age Hollywood glamour ethos. Dress hot. Song hot. Singer even hotter. Today's Hollywood should just put a bullet in it's own brain.
