The Diamonds are the matriarchs of Homeworld because their essence (their "sweat") literally creates new life. That's how they create new gems. Yellow's "sauna" and Blue's bathtub are all ways for them to extract their essence so they can be placed on the injectors and then inject them on the colonies to produce new gems. The fact Peridot (an Era-2 gem) was created defected is one of the consequences of Pink faking her shattering. Since they didn't have Pink's essence, some of the gems produced during Era-2 were defective, being small and less powerful, what forced Homeworld to quickly develop their technology in order to compensante the limitations of the new gems.

Fun fact: The voice actor for White Diamond, Christine Ebersole leaked before she was first officially mentioned in the show by Patti Lupone, the voice actor for Yellow. Patti and Christine were performing in a Broadway show together at the time and people really wanted to Christine to play White. In Broadway shows the audience is allowed to wait at the backdoor of the theater for when the cast comes out to chat and get autographs. To my understanding, the origin of the diamonds (in the literal sense of existing in the show) is still a kept secret, but there was emphasis in an art book or something similar that there is a correlation between the diamonds and the giant crack splitting homeworld (with homeworld looking like a geode)

Yeah, reincarnation, immigrant experience, familial projection (parents/older siblings telling you who you are), well-meaning but misunderstanding trans situations, all kinds of "fun" social identity complexities. Everything is of course metaphor, what's in the show can't be equated perfectly to any one real thing, but you're right, the emotional truth behind it resonates perfectly, and it's beautiful character work as-is purely for the characters in universe. this is definitely where some of the details don't get hashed out in the show, and a big chunk of the Diamonds' character growth gets left out between this and the start of Future. Pearls are usually personalized for the gems their given to. Also the color of a gem indicates which diamond they serve and for less obvious ones its usually a gem that can appear under multiple diamonds courts. Amethysts were made for pink but were then moved to blue. Jasper was pinks but moved to yellow. (Pink and blue make purple, pink and yellow make orange)

Yellow and Blue are twins, and although it seems Yellow is the older or most senior of the two of them, going by their murals, it’s actually Blue who is the elder of the two. The Crystal Gems represent the Diamonds and their relationships to one another all this time since episode one. Pearl, like White, is the obsessive, neurotic perfectionist. They are the Super Ego. Ruby is a brash and volatile, and action-oriented like Yellow. Sapphire is calm and diplomatic, like Blue. Together they are the Action and Emotion of Ego. And as Ruby and Sapphire are a relationship, Yellow and Blue are extremely dependant on one another. Amethyst is impulsive and spontaneous. She is the Id. Childish and flighty. However, CN cancelled the show, so they had to effectively cram a whole season into just a couple of episodes. So, considering that, I think it was great. I will admit though, a whole season to focus on homeworld and develop White and give her character justice would have been amazing.
