In days of old, when Squats were bold
And Wartrakks were just invented,
The Guardsmen rode in Predator holds,
And paying 27p per miniature contented
A page by page review of a Rogue Trader era White Dwarf issue that introduces the "brand new" Terminators, Predator tank, Realm of Chaos: Lost & The Damned, Space Hulk (1st edition), plus material for WHFRP, Dark Future (a Gaslands style RPG/wargame), and a surprising crossover between Rogue Trader and West End Game's "Paranoia" RPG.

It seems to me like the old White Dwarf magazines had the mindset of: "We want to show you all kinds of cool ways you can have fun with our miniatures". It was full of different missions, mini-games, modeling ideas, and all kinds of stuff that you could actually use. Now White Dwarf magazines are basically a $17 book of GW wanking over their newest miniatures with something interesting slipping through the cracks once every couple of years, so you're basically paying a company for their own advertisements. When I worked at a game shop, there was an unspoken 'code' for White Dwarf mags. If we had it displayed at the counter near a new 40k product, it had something in there that could be used (missions, rules, cards, etc.). If we just put it on the normal GW White Dwarf rack, it was just another issue of GW's 'new product wank'. They're always sealed, but we'd always open our 'store copy' and check before we put it out on the shelf, and all our customers knew 'the signal' so they didn't waste their money. Also, our 'store copy' would be within reach, and if it had something that someone needed- they could take photos of it or I'd make a photocopy for them, as long as they were spending a few dollars in the store. No sense in charging someone $17 for a couple of pages of useful stuff.

It's been that way since the early aughts. It's really a shame what this mag and some other institutions have become. It really would have been better for them to go under.

@@attentionspanlabs I'm one of those people that thinks they make some good models, and I do enjoy some Necromunda- but I've been saying for a while that the best thing GW could do is just... make models. And then license that IP out to a bidding company to produce their games, because let's face it- they're not really good at making rules. Necromunda so far is the one I think they got right, because it's in the same spirit as Rogue Trader in many ways. But there's no shortage of game publishers that just make game rules, and far better rules than GW can make. Besides, let's not sit here and pretend GW is trying to make good games for their miniatures- GW's trying to make a 'game' that convinces you to buy more of their miniatures.

@@elijahherstal776 the current staff, whoever the amorphous blobs happened to be these days, are standing on the shoulders of giants and usually crapping on them. As we've said before, they're not really a game company now.

@@attentionspanlabs yeah. That's the sad part. Of course it's stuff like this that inspired me to start working on my own tabletop skirmish game system. When I get it done, it's not for sale... ... the core rules will be public domain. I wanna make something fun that people take it and do as they please, even tear it apart and remake it the way they want to. I don't want money, I want people to have fun.

The Darksword Trilogy was not a dnd series. I picked up like book 2 or book 3 in a library sale. Back then if you didn’t find a book when it was new, it was hard to find. Never read the whole series, but it was entertaining. I thought it was good at the time. No idea how my 45 yo self would like it now versus when I was like 12

Badger Games is a perennial vendor at the con, and they have an excellent selection. I hope you get back to check it out. HMGS usually has three cons per year, so the next one is in November. It's called "Fall In!".

I never really understood the excessive devotion behind miniature wargaming. I can understand playing a wargame with official models and rules for prize money in an official store, but playing it on your own? They're not poseable, they're smaller than action figures, you have to paint and assemble them, and they're way too expensive for something made out of plastic. Same goes for the books. Bandai sells hard plastic Gundam model kits for $20-$30, and those things are poseable and are already colored in; just assemble, apply stickers, and pose away to create your own battles and stories. I'd much rather spend the money on action figures of different shapes and sizes that I can pose, take pictures of, and write stories about. Heck, I can even make up my own DnD roleplaying game or wargame out of them, and that's more fun than playing the game of a company that keeps milking its customers for money. There are cheaper alternatives to wargaming, especially since there's plenty of war-themed board games that are far more affordable. I remember buying a board game of Risk: Clone Wars edition one time for a modest price of $25, and I played it on my own, with me playing both sides. And per the game's rules, Order 66 can be thwarted if the Jedi player rolls the right dice value. As a result, half the Clone Legions disobeyed Order 66 and waged a civil war against Palpatine's loyalists and the Clone Legions that DID carry out Order 66, tearing the galaxy apart again after the Separatists were defeated. The Jedi and their Clone Legions won against Palpatine's forces, and as a result, they seized control of Coruscant, the Senate, the Republic, and they had Palpatine executed. Boy was I laughing my ass off for days after that. If I ever assemble my own 40K army, that army's probably going to stay in a briefcase until I take them out for a battle against players in an official tournament to get some prize money. That, or I'll pose them in front of my larger Transformers, Gundam, and Star Wars vehicles to stimulate scenarios of Space Marines going up against massive foes that can crush them in a moment's notice. Just imagine Guilliman or Lion'El Johnson about to get crushed by a large AT-AT/Megatron toy as some Primaris Marines watch in horror. Or Saint Celestine held in the hands of an avatar of Unicron as he crushes the life out of her body in front of some Sisters of Battle. Ah, heck, I'll probably just get the Joytoy figures for that nonsense. They're as expensive as the minis, but they're poseable and are already assembled and painted.

As you know, I like poseable toys too, but they also have their limitations. Much of the interest in the hobby is building and painting them, not just gaming with them. I have also gamed with action figures, and I have built and painted custom action figures and vehicles (particularly GI Joes). Toys aren't very inexpensive anymore, either.
