I love you girl but I have to disagree. My family and I are on our fifth home (I'm 58) and I just don't see these trends or colors as realistic for the average person. Grey was everywhere for 8 years and now it's not. Beige is now the new grey. Blonde wood was the rage and now it's medium dark. Black granite was it until it wasn't. The best kitchen reno is what goes with the rest of your house and if you have a lot of white trim and white molding....a white kitchen with a pop of subtle color will always be the way to go. Most people reno their kitchens every 20 years or so and even then it's often not a full reno. I just find some of these suggestions to be totally out of touch.

I 100% agree. I am also 58 and can remember being 6 years old and loving my cousin's kitchen that was on a farm and all white. Ever since I have owned any house, painting the kitchen cabinets white is first on my list. I never like a dark kitchen (grew up with it in the 70s!). In my humble opinion and I am not a designer, white kitchens with colorful accessories or walls if you like color are the way to go. Easy to change and not that expensive. But...to each his own.

I truly admire the vastness of your design knowledge and how you take the time to share - for every trend we’re seeing - the “how we got here.” It makes so much sense that the white kitchen spawned from real estate investors and probably TV flippers. My reality is that I’m currently building my next home while renovating a vacation rental and the white kitchen still feels like a safe place to fall for the rental. The hideaway kitchen doesn’t appeal to me but I appreciate that it can be a great solution for some folks. If I hide the kitchen while we’re eating, how will I know I’ve forgotten to serve the bread, or the side dish or turn the oven off? 😮

Lisa, love you but you missed the boat on white kitchens! My great grandmother, grandmother, mother, and I had/have white kitchens! It is a Southern Thing, Honey! I am sorry I have high end stainless steel appliances (the FINGER PRINTS) bcs I preferred my old white ones that gave me a more seemless, clean look. Is anyone else fed up with all the standing around being "hosted" as a guest in the kitchen? For 20 years I lived in a home built in 1936 in Miami Beach. It was very open. It had a fabulous butlers pantry. When we redid the kitchen, we did the butler's pantry, too. I had a formal dining room, living room, etc.I miss that gracious living. You cant even get some real kitchen gems like the built in paper towel, foil/wrap holder. Of course, I would like my MTV, Blockbuster, and flip phone, too.❤️

I have a cream kitchen with marble countertops and mix brownish tiles throughout on walls. The floor has square wooden like tiles. We have an outside kitchen for heavy use , it stores large of chest freezers , bulk storage , this kitchen is used for large family gatherings ( cooking) . I grill and cook fish in there ( like today). It is a dark green with same floors and tiles as outside but different pattern . I love that the designers have started to use curves in the kitchen ( no protruding sharp corners for kids running around) I see a lot of that these days. Thank you!

I lived in an apartment with hardwareless cabinets in the kitchen and based on that experience I would never go that route, no matter the trend. When you’re in the kitchen your hands may be wet, you may have food on them without realizing it, and you’re touching all these surfaces all the time. Which means you have to clean these cabinets all the time where you may be leaving finger stains of all kind. Over time the paint starts wearing off just in those areas you’re constantly touching and cleaning. After a couple of years you may need to repaint all the cabinets. Adding handles to the kitchen cabinets is a must IMO, especially if they are just wood and paint. If they are some other material you may not need to repaint so often but you’ll still be wiping finger prints of them all the time. Who has time for that?
@YeshuaKingMessiah2 ай бұрын
I have handles & knobs but I tend to leave open a door or drawer once I open it while cooking Then I close up it all when I’m done. It’s like the ease n efficiency of open shelving with the grime & dust free of cupboards! Plus no banging doors n drawers while I’m active. I would LOVE open shelving if not for how filthy everything gets I do use it still for daily use items.

I absolutely cannot stand the European trend of hidden kitchen. Something I would never consider. I never went for the all white kitchen either. Such an unimaginative and boring space. Mu first thought about the hidden kitchens is splatter and dust. Those doors & hinges need to be cleaned, and take up space. Also, it looks depressingly bland with the doors shut. I agree. No thanks. I enjoy visiting with friends and family in the kitchen while cooking. We cook together. I have a lovely Morris wallpaper on the upper portion of walls (strawberry thief in slate) a chair rail with maison blanc (Sherwin Williams) below, plus the original honey oak cabinets. Love my kitchen. I also like the looks of a soft white kitchen when done well, but it’s not for me.

I’ve always liked a kitchen with a separate formal dining room. We usually have daily evening meals in the dining room. Dining room w doors is very handy for formal dinners as I can set an elaborate table in advance and close it off to pets and kids. And I love being able to close off the kitchen mess from diners. Having people milling around while I prepare a meal, especially a big dinner, would be a nightmare. The magical guest-milling-about-with-dinner-prep appears to me to require very simple, mostly prepped food which isn’t my jam.

Hi Lisa, I am glad you took note of the flat cabinets without hardware. I loved that look as soon as I saw it a couple years ago when researching my tiny contemporary house and was thinking about having a relaxing space that isn't distracting. I never considered doing all white and did consider two tones of green below and white above, but in the end decided on focusing on the space's envelope and having things flow from one end of the room to the other keeping chukum warm off white tones for the walls and counter tops and light wood for the cabinet drawers, minimizing contrast so the kitchen won't be distracting when looking that way from the living or dining parts of the room. I'd rather have the garden views grab my attention. Styles come and go so it is great to just find something you love and can live with for however long you'll be living in your home.

Bought a home in 1995 with white painted cabinets. They were chipping and staining within 3 years by 5 they looked like heck. I finally got new cabinets in February 2024. I don’t think painted cabinets are durable enough to survive a kitchen that is used regularly. Maybe if you don’t cook much painted cabinets are fine. I've been trounced before about white kitchens and I do realize it's a matter of taste. That said, we had a white kitchen in our first house because they were inexpensive. Hardwood cabinets are very expensive because hardwood is expensive and finishing hardwood is expensive. If I felt that my hardwood cabinets kitchen needed updating I might change the shade of the stain. Oak can turn a bit orange and some people like that. I like a darker stain on oak. Cherry kitchens look timeless and done right, oak can be stained to be close. White kittens remind me of a house built in the 50's to be inexpensive for people to buy. My dad used to find a piece of hardwood furniture being thrown out. He spent a lot of time to strip it off and finished it beautifully. Nothing can claim that the beauty of natural grain isn't timeless. A friend of ours succumbed to the trendy and painted her hardwood cherry chin cabinet white. Furniture homicide.

I have asked about staining but can't find a company to do it. I have taken out the inside of a few doors and added ribbed glass. It helps a little but the style is outdated. Is it efficient, practical and above all, beautiful? Answer yes to those questions and it doesn't matter one bit what the finishes or colors are. Because those are the real "timeless" issues. Popular trends to sell more things are irrelevant. Efficient - Does it work well with a minimum amount of frustration? Practical - Does it endure, give you the storage you need and allow for a great work flow? Beautiful - Does it bring you and others you welcome into your space happiness and joy?

an 11 min video is now gummed up with 4 minutes of ads/sponsors.....so sad, never used to be this way. That said white has always been the color of choice because if you do any serious cooking (my kitchen is not simply a showpiece) then it needs to be CLEANED- and bleach and other semi harsh cleansers are the go to for a truly deep cleaned kitchen that isn't industrial steel... with white you don't have to worry about bleaching out fragile colors.

I just moved from California into a traditional house in the South East and dropped 25k into refurbishing the kitchen with white cabinets and marble quartz countertops, and I love it! Because of where the kitchen was located in the home and it’s natural light, I wanted the room lighter and brighter. (It was originally all dark brown. ) It has 12 foot ceilings, and dark hardwood floors, an oil rubbed bronze kitchen faucet and matching cabinet/drawer pulls that don’t get caught on clothing. Wrought iron traditional chandelier, and wrought iron ironwork over the baker’s pantry windows, there is a fresh classic feel to it without that old lady look some traditional homes have. The kitchen is so big, I could have added an island, but opted for a white washed table that can expand from 80” to 120” and fit my whole family for the holidays. My only regret is that the new huge refrigerator doesn’t fit within the cabinet, so I’m looking at buying a kit to cover it. I don’t consider white cabinets outdated in my home.

I generally like minimlyst look but not when it comes to cabinets. I love some simple but beautiful handles as long as there not catching on cloths...hide the fridge and pantry sure but I still want a kitchen to look like a kitchen.

I live in an all Navajo White apartment. My kitchen has retro tile backsplash with pink and yellow and turquoise tiles every so often. I did some research, found out my apartment has mcm lines, and did more studying especially you, Lisa Ma'am. 1 color with white adds intetest without being too boring, so I went with Mamie Pink for the coffee pot and toaster. Did Warhol cats, Magritte Cloud in a Glass and a Van Gogh puzzle for art on the walls to make it a little more dining room than eat in kitchen. More than that would it look cramped instead of spacious-cozy. Thanks to you, Lisa!!😊😊😊

Real Europeans (especially Italians in the US & CA) solve all these problems simply by having 2 kitchens. One to cook in that is totally out of sight in the basement or cellarway and the other is just for show. The stove needs to be lightly dusted once in a while and you are perpetually prepared to recieve company at a moments notice.😁

What you’re showing today is ugly and very expensive! Love white kitchen! Love a bit of natural wood and stone but you can add anything with the white palate.

I don’t like the doors. When open, ppl would have to walk around them or keep bumping into them! Def not for me.

White kitchens came about due to Hollywood movies-bottom line-Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday and It’s Complicated. The designer changed kitchens. My mouth dropped when I saw some of those kitchens and said someday….

I remember the audience gasping loudly when they saw Diane Keaton’s all white kitchen in something gotta give in 2003. That was the beginning of the trend for all white kitchens. Everyone wanted one.

Kitchens should not be trends. Put in what you like and what is your style that you love.

White kitchens are so hard to keep clean with families. Yet colors or wood tones end up running their course within five years as well.
