QG LED Review - • QG LED Grow Lights Rev...
(The QG LED Review contains PAR footprints for the lights in this video)
I am aware that someone will comment on my narrative saying "73 watts is half of 115 watts." Yes it's actually about 63% to be specific. However, considering the plant under the 73 watts of light strips was really only being lit by 2/3rds of the strips at best, technically you could cover up a portion of the strip lights and get the same result. And in that case, the plant is virtually only using a portion of that 73 watts which would easily be less than half of the 115 watt light. And those plants under that 115 watt light were using virtually all of the light area compared to the 1 plant under the strip lights. I know this because I was also growing a pepper plant under the strips at the same time. That's quite a bit a growth and light coverage for that low of a wattage.
Technical Info...
The white LED brand is Roleadro. It is 115 watts at the wall. The Blurple light is 130 watts at the wall and is generic brand. Info for these lights can be found in the links below.
I used the nutrient trio from General Hydroponics. I started off with a seedling dose and then jumped to the aggressive vegetative dose after the plants had their first few sets of true leaves. I started the test off with 6 gallons of water in the container and ended with a little over 2 gallons. The entire grow was over a period of close to 3 months in a consistent ambient temperature of 73F. I switched to 12 hours of light to initiate flowering and also switched to the nutrient ratio for fruiting. I also used an air-stone for the hydroponic method.
The PAR output was kept around 500um of light at the plant canopy. The PAR output on the lights was almost identical and the center PAR measurements are 1000um/6" - 400um/12" - 200um/18" on both lights (not the QG strips).
The time lapse camera used was a Brinno TLC 200 Pro with an aftermarket lens. 1 photo every ten minutes. The night cycle was removed in post. The veg lighting hours were 17 on. The flowering light cycle was 12 hours off.

interesting. i've found shopping for good LED grow lights to be difficult, so these videos are insightful. this season, i planted peppers at the same time outdoor in soil and indoor with DWC. now, just beginning to fruit, the outdoor plants are much bushier and healthier-looking than the DWC... despite my mediocre soil vs the high-quality hydroponic solution. this just shows how powerful natural sunlight is and how important it is to try to reproduce it indoors.

Without watching the next video yet my intuition says that starting with red blue then switching to white would yield most desirable results with a more compact bushy plant and more productive flowering state. In my opinion. Or maybe even start red blue switch white flower red blue switch white. So many permutations this makes me want to start trying my own experiments! After thinking about it naturally there is a red blue shift in spring and fall with longer and shorter days

I've been scratching my head over this topic. I'm still confused on what LED's I should buy for my indoors greenhouse. Some say white is fine, others that it isn't enough for plants to grow. I want to grow cacti seedlings.

I'm really new to indoor growing but I purchased a similar light to the RBW light used in this video. My input for you would be if you get an RBW light that has multiple switches to control the red vs blue lights, keep them both on at all times. The first crop (Marry Jane) I grew (again I'm brand new to all this) really didn't seem to like the lack of blue light in flower. The growth stopped entirely until I flipped the blue light back on. As far as intensity you can control that with distance from the "canopy" the LEDs I have run cool enough I can hold my hand against the glass and only feel a nice warmth (I held my hand there for 2 minutes.) I also noticed doing that made the nails on that hand grow out. That was an interesting observation. I know MJ and cacti are different plants but they sit under the same sun so that's my 2 cents. I'm going to upgrade to a white LED setup in the future after seeing this and another video showing a 30% difference in leaf vegetation but for now I'm running my second grow with both switches on from day 1 to harvest.

I found a pack of white 20W 6500K 4' LED shop lights from the FANG online retailer for $60.00 CAD for a pack of 6, so I bought 3 packs. I have noticed the same with an HLG65 vs a Mars 300 in my veg area. The blurple Mars stacks shorter (I didn't notice branching but I usually top everything - interesting! ) but the growth is slower overall under the red/blue. - even though watt for watt the Mars is double the draw from the wall in case anyone wants to know.

Given your approach to these videos, I'm curious if HLG (horticulture lighting group) would send you one of their led grow lights (mabye the HLG 65, or the 100, if you like smaller scale testing, ie: real low wattage) to do some testing with. They're currently using Samsung diodes in most of their lights (they use Nichia in one model I think). ledgardener has done a couple, maybe less 'scientific', grows with some of their lights, if you want to check out his channel. Very informative as well, more from an electronics standpoint. Thanks for the video. Peace.

I am very curious about the actual spectrum for "white" led grow lights because I discovered that there are many ways to make white. For example, it can be made with just blue and yellow with absolutely no red. I trust that most all grow lights use R G B, but it would be great to see their actual spectrum. The manufacturer CREE has excellent publications on color output of their leds. Another point to ponder is that plants do use colors other than red and blue [yellow and far red] they just don't use it efficiently. I am into African violets and currently using white , but want to try R B panels. Thanks for your videos !!
@GrowingAnswers
@GrowingAnswers 5 жыл бұрын
Robert Hendrickson I think ur a little confused. It’s not possible to have white Light without red as part of its spectrum. And as I have discussed on my channel a few times, there is no such thing as a white diode. All white leds are just blue leds with a yellow phosphor coating that fluoresces much like what a black light does to fluorescent colors. It’s technically no different than what a fluorescent light (the glass tubes). The concept is the same. There is also no such thing as a yellow led either. Again...a yellow led is just a blue led with a variation of the same phosphor coating that an led that produces white light.
@bobhend10
@bobhend10 5 жыл бұрын
@@GrowingAnswers I believe that in the "shop light" LED fixtures, the so-called 6500K versions may in fact contain almost no red. Not a good choice for African violet growers ! I am still very interested in the phosphor spectra for the white leds. The phosphors for the old fluorescent tubes had very sharp lines, a very ragged, uneven spectrum. However from what I the premium grow light manufacturers are showing , these white leds have very nice full spectra . I had no idea how a white led worked until I read your description. It explains how led lighting is now everywhere from street lights to stage lighting.
@GrowingAnswers
@GrowingAnswers 5 жыл бұрын
Robert Hendrickson well 6500k is heavy on the blue spectrum, but it doesn’t mean there is no red. Basically if you put on red sunglasses and see red light, then there is red light. It’s physical science 101.

I have done a lot of research on LED lighting. I have come to the conclusion that the only way to go is using the new generation of Quantum Lights. These are full spectrum lights and these are so efficient that they don't need fans anymore to cool down. Only 160 to 200 Watts is more than enough for 1m2.

Hordaculprit ___ I’m not sure what you disagree on, the facts or...? There is no doubt that additional red light promotes more flowering, but there is only so much energy the plant can use to grow fruit. So basically what is happening is more flowers are produced under the blurple light, but the energy is divided amongst the additional fruit mass. So you get more production with slightly lower mass and quality.

Growing Answers I see where your coming from, I have been learning about ppfd, spectrum, intensity and such, and have learned that each kind of plant takes light differently, and what may work for some may not work for others, a lot if people test lights growing one kind of plant and call that fact for all, the research I've studied shows that in certain plants the blurple not only produces more fruit and flowers, but larger, denser product. I really like your video it's one of the only vids about cheap lights I've found, if you look at my channel you will see that's what I'm starting with. Since I'm still learning I didn't see the.
