White-lipped pythons (Leiopython spp.) have got to be some of the most beautiful snakes on the planet. But beauty isn't the only thing that matters when it comes to picking a great pet snake, and the white-lipped pythons don't have the best reputation. Is that reputation deserved? Do white-lipped pythons make good pets? Is a white-lipped python the best pet snake for you?

Thanks for sharing Clint. Good overview in general as too many people are jumping to these without really considering their temperment and husbandry. I was considering a white lipped python for my first snake (crazy, I know) but ultimately their reputation dissuaded me. I considered other species like Burms, boas, carpet pythons, and super dwarf retics. I even spoke to you, Clint, at the reptile room at length. Your suggestion was to get a boa, or a SD retic. Ultimately I threw a total curveball and have ended up with an olive python (maybe also a crazy choice 😆). She's been great so far. One bite on day one that I'll call my fault for interacting with her at all. Otherwise she eats great, handles well for her age, and is beautiful. Thanks for this video for a bit of confirmation. Look forward to coming back to the reptile room the next time I'm down there paragliding 😀
@bunn-ii9319
@bunn-ii9319 11 ай бұрын
honestly their reputation isn't really deserved, most people just get bit the first couple times and completely stop trying to interact with them. they definitely calm down eventually if you put in the work, and most of them even as hatchlings are more cage defensive than anything, once they're out, they'll only bite you if you make a handling mistake, they're incredibly intelligent pythons
@pjm204
@pjm204 11 ай бұрын
@bunn-ii9319 I'm sure that is the case. My assumption is that many snake keepers that eventually get a white lipped python have a large collection already and simply don't put in the required time with the individual. With my olive, it's my only snake. I'm handling her daily now so that when she's large, she's already acclimated to it.
@bunn-ii9319
@bunn-ii9319 11 ай бұрын
@@pjm204 I agree 100%, my whitelipped was my second snake and he has tamed down considerably, he will bluff with open mouth strikes if he's in a mood or swing his head fast at me to let me know I made a mistake, but genuine bites are pretty uncommon and I've only been musked once. a lot of the bad reputation was from imports/people that dont have the time to invest with them
@pjm204

I love love love white lip pythons! Thanks for finally doing a video on them. Mine rarely ever musk especially not the adults. I have to differ with the sizes, I could be wrong but I think the 10’ size is a myth and only very old ones get above 7-8 ft. They are the most absolute fun python to feed, their construction abilities are top notch, often putting twice the coils around their prey other pythons and boas of similar size do. I might be wrong but I think your editor put a picture of a savu python in the b roll when you were talking about availability.

@@ClintsReptilesI think most people want a pet that will last them at least 25-15 years. You never want to see a pet pass but of course when you're talking 50+ years the danger is you'll pass first. If you're getting a performance your kid, as my parents found, it's nice if that pet passes away when they're off at college and you don't have to deal with their tears and if you're already older 25-15 seems about right in terms of how far in the future you typically plan.

I'm wondering if the captive breeding program can truly create more handlable snakes or is it up to early raising techniques. I met a man at a reptile show with a table full of calm easily handlable green tree pythons. He said all his snakes are like this, but he also requires everyone who buys a snake also buy an enclosure or prove they have an appropriate enclosure. So is raising a stereotypical "aggressive" snake that is handleable nature or nurture? More importantly is there a future for puppy dog tames captive bred Tokay Geckos?

Hey thanks for including temperature in Kelvin, I hate trying to figure out how warm things are with arbitrary zeroes. That said, next time could you maybe give Rankine as well? I prefer imperial spacing.

I have to go to that reptile room one of these days. It's only a couple of towns away from where I live now.

Thank you for this video!!! I love iridescent snakes. Can you do a head to head of the White Lip Python vs the Brazilian Rainbow Boa? BRB are my dream snake but I've been looking at these as well and am torn between the two...

I have both, Brazilians are much easy in my experience. Smaller size, better temperament and much easier to find captive born and bred specimens. I can hold my BRB whenever no worries of a bite, my white lips will nail me every single time. Every snake is a individual but overall rainbows much easier to care for.
